Android vulnerability discovered affecting devices running version 1.6 and later

A doozy of an Android bug has been discovered by Bluebox Security’s Bluebox Labs, one that affects all Android releases since 1.6 Donut. With the vulnerability, malicious coders can create a trojan application to serve whatever purpose they’d like, whether to steal a user’s information or take over control of the device. More information will be given at Black Hat USA 2013 in a keynote speech.

According to Bluebox Labs, because of how many versions of Android are affected, a potential 900 million devices could suffer from the vulnerability, which involves a means for modifying APK code without harm to the app’s cryptographic signature. As such, a perfectly legit app can be converted into a trojan that slips under the radar.

The company goes on to specify that apps developed by the handset’s makers pose a greater risk due to their elevated privileges. Because of this, one of these apps that are exploited and turned into a trojan can give the hacker complete access to the mobile OS’s apps and system, as well as all their related data. The ramifications of this are two-fold:

Depending on the intent of the hacker, personal data like text messages, emails, any documents on the device, account passwords that are saved, pictures, and other related items can be swiped, potentially giving access to things like bank accounts and revealing contacts’ information. In addition, this can be taken a step further so that the hacker has the ability to use the device to send text messages, snap pictures, record videos, make phone calls, etc.

In an extreme case, the vulnerability could be used to create a botnet.

According to Bluebox, it informed Google of this Android vulnerability in February of this year. To take care of the issue, every device manufacturer will need to create a patch and roll it out to its users, who will then need to install it. The security firm says it will release “tools/material” and more info about this vulnerability during Blackhat USA 2013, which takes place later this month.

Mister Donut Thailand – Sushi-shaped colorful doughnuts “Sushido Delight” – Does it stimulate your appetite?

Mister Donut Thailand - Sushi-shaped colorful doughnuts "Sushido Delight" - Does it stimulate your appetite?

Mister Donut, a popular doughnut chain in Japan, started selling “Sushido Delight” in its stores in Thailand. It’s a set of 10 different flavored doughnuts that each look surprisingly like different kinds of sushi.

For the fillings and toppings for those doughnuts, plenty of tropical fruits such as lychees, coconuts, and passion fruits are used, and that sounds really good. However, I am not sure if they look very appetizing to me since they look like sushi…

Samsung Galaxy Note III specifications leak with 3GB RAM

It’s become a race, suddenly, to deliver the first Android smartphone – or first smartphone with any mobile operating system, that is, to bring on a whopping 3GB of RAM, here between the Samsung Galaxy Note III and the LG Optimus G2. While neither device has been confirmed with full specifications delivered by its creator – or confirmed to exist, at that – both machines have been rumored just today to be carrying the next-level amount of processing capability.

The Samsung Galaxy Note III may be the first to market, bringing with it a cool 5.99-inch 1080p display, holding with it the same amount of pixels (slightly less tightly packed) as the Galaxy S 4. This device is also suggested by MyDrivers, a publication speaking with South Korean inside sources, to be working with a slightly thinner body than its predecessor. As the Galaxy Note II worked with a weight of 182g, the Note III will be edging down below 180g and 8mm thick.

The Galaxy Note III is suggested to, by the time it’s launched, be working with Android 4.3, Jelly Bean’s newest iteration, and will support 4G LTE-Advanced. Of course there will be more than one iteration of the Galaxy Note III, the same as the Galaxy S 4 and its own LTE-A version unveiled last week.

The third version of the Note handset will be working with at least two versions, depending on the region they’ll be delivered. One iteration’s delivery with a Samsung-made Exynos 5 “Octa” SoC will match that of the international version of the Galaxy S 4. The other version will have the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor as the LTE-A version of the Galaxy S 4, a step above the standard Galaxy S 4 delivered to the USA on multiple carriers earlier this year.

Earlier today it was also reported that the reveal date for the Samsung Galaxy Note III will be September 4th at a pre-IFA 2013 “Samsung Unpacked” event. Sounds reasonable!

Samsung unveils plans to build five new research and development centers

A Samsung official who spoke to The Korea Times revealed that Samsung has plans to build five new Research and Development centers in South Korea, a project that will cost approximately $4.5 billion. The centers will each focus on their own aspects of R&D, with one being used for maximizing creativity, another for study and development of different components and materials.

Such a move is the by-product of belief that research and development is necessary for continuing success in the technology industry as time moves on. The Samsung official went on to state that “heated competition” in the market influences its preparation and how it “copes”. The company has been ramping up its R&D spending in recent years, having increased last year to 11.9 trillion won over 2011′s 10.3 trillion in spending.

Of the five new centers, one will be the R5 building, an 800 billion won investment that will be used for developing smart devices and will be located in Suwon. Near this building with be another center for developing parts for the purpose of studying next-gen components and materials that will potentially be implemented in the company’s future devices.

A 1.2 trillion won center will be located in southern Seoul within Woomyeon-dong, this one said to be “cutting-edge” and slated for operation in June of 2014. A reported 10,000 designers, strategists, and developers will be located at this facility. And finally, there are two centers slated for construction in Pyeongtaek and Hwaseong, both of which will be used for flat-screen and chipset research.

Said one Samsung researcher: “R&D may not generate tangible results in the short term. But the key point is that Samsung can’t survive, if it fails to develop products that can give value to customers. Much of the remarkable progress in fields such as mobile computing and medicine has been possible thanks to the advancement of information technology backed increased spending on research.”

Bluebox reveals Android security hole, may affect 99 percent of devices

Bluebox reveals Android security vulnerability, supposedly affects up to 99 percent of devices

Researchers at Bluebox Security have revealed a disturbing flaw in Android’s security model, which the group claims may affect up to 99 percent of Android devices in existence. According to Bluebox, this vulnerability has existed since Android 1.6 (Donut), which gives malicious app developers the ability to modify the code of a legitimate APK, all without breaking its cryptographic signature — thereby allowing the installation to go unnoticed. To pull off the exploit, a rotten app developer would first need to trick an unknowing user into installing the malicious update, but hackers could theoretically gain full control of a user’s phone if the “update” posed as a system file from the manufacturer.

Bluebox claims that it notified Google of the exploit in February. According to CIO, Bluebox CTO Jeff Forristal has named the Galaxy S 4 as the only device that’s currently immune to the exploit — which suggests that a security patch may already exist. Forristal further claims that Google is working on an update for its Nexus devices. In response to our inquiry, Google told us that it currently has no comment. We certainly hope that device manufacturers do the responsible thing and distribute timely security patches to resolve this issue. Absent that, you can protect yourself by installing updates through the Play Store and Android’s built-in system update utility.

Tim Hardaway Becomes First To Sign Florida Gay Marriage Petition (PHOTOS)

A former NBA star who once declared “I hate gay people” became the first person to sign a new petition seeking to legalize gay marriage in Florida.

Tim Hardaway signed the first petition Wednesday night for Equal Marriage Florida, a fresh effort to repeal a 2008 state amendment banning same-sex unions. He added his name while leaning over a pool table in a public ceremony at Sully’s Tavern in Miami alonside Equal Marriage Florida organizer Vanessa Brito.

Hardaway, whose killer crossover served teams including Golden State and Miami, has been working for years to undo the damage caused by a hateful tirade on South Florida sports radio in 2007. Asked to respond to the coming out of retired player John Amaechi, he admitted to being homophobic and said he would distance himself from a gay colleague:

Joe Peyronnin: Egypt 2.0

For the second time in little more than two years the Egyptian military has overthrown its county’s leader in response to massive nationwide protests. Only this time they deposed a democratically elected president, Mohammad Morsi, who had failed to live up to his promises and who had installed an authoritarian government.

Egyptian General Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi announced Wednesday evening that the Morsi government was dissolved, the constitution was suspended, and that an interim government would be installed headed by a senior jurist. Military officers and a group of political and religious leaders joined el-Sisi at his announcement. The announcement set off a jubilant celebration in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, where tens of thousands of anti Morsi demonstrators had gathered. Meanwhile, a few blocks away, a large gathering of pro Morsi supporters protested the coup. The Egyptian army had been deployed to maintain peace, but violence may not be avoided.

Former President Mohammad Morsi is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a decades old Islamic and political group founded on the belief that Islam is not just a religion, but a way of life. Last November, Morsi granted himself unlimited powers, including the ability to legislate without judicial oversight. His moves toward an Islamic state were unpopular with many Egyptians who took to the streets to express their unhappiness.

Boxee Cloud DVR to shut down following Samsung deal, goes dark July 10th

Boxee Cloud DVR, RIP

If you’re like us, you were wondering what impact Samsung’s acquisition of Boxee would have on Boxee’s Cloud DVR service. Unfortunately, we don’t have good news. Boxee is shutting down the service on July 10th, and customers will lose access to their TV recordings at the same time. We’re not surprised by the move, but it effectively shuts the company down within the space of a week. When Boxee’s apps, the Boxee Box and the Live TV add-on are either gone or on their way out, there aren’t really products left to offer — it’s all Samsung from here.

Microsoft forms retirement deal with former Windows president Steven Sinofsky

The former president of Microsoft’s Windows division, Steven Sinofsky, has struck a retirement deal with the company. We reported back in November that he was on the way out, with sources surfacing soon after claiming that his sudden departure was over refusal to name him CEO Ballmer’s successor. Reportedly, the retirement agreement has been in deliberation since late last year.

Steven Sinofsky

The information was given by Microsoft, which published a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. According to the agreement, Sinofsky will receive approximately $14.2 million in stocks that were previously issued while being required to certain obligations to Microsoft, with legal aid being specified as one of them.

Likewise, per the retirement deal, Sinofsky is not allowed to enter in competition with his former employer, nor can he encourage any current employees to leave the company for a different one. There are other provisions said to have been previously agreed to, as well, but Microsoft did not reveal what provisions are.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Microsoft stated: “This agreement provides a number of important considerations for Microsoft, including a commitment that Steven will continue assisting with intellectual property litigation until January 1, 2017.” In addition, according to the spokesperson, Sinofsky’s retirement deal is similar to what employees who worked for a minimum of 15 years and retire after 55 years of age receive.

Back in December, Sinofsky took on a teaching job with Harvard’s Business School, an announcement the former Windows boss made on Twitter with a hashtag referring to it as a sabbatical. His work there dealt with product development. In addition, he’s worked at penning journal pieces on the same topic. His non-compete agreement with Microsoft is over at the end of 2013.
