LG G2 QuickWindow cases unveiled ahead of flagship handset’s launch [UPDATE]

LG‘s upcoming flagship handset, the LG G2, has had its launch date etched in stone for August 7, with the announcement by LG following months of leaks that have shown off the handset in many iterations. Now ahead of this launch, the maker has unveiled a series of several colorful QuickWindow cases for its flagship offering.

As the name suggests, the QuickWindow cases have a small window near the top, leaving a small portion of the display exposed while covering the rest of it. This allows most of the display to be protected by the case, but also facilitates using the smartphone without opening the case. This is achieved using a “light” finger swipe, pulling up the QuickWindow UX window.

The QuickWindow UX displays select information when triggered, such as a weather report, clock, music player, alarm clock, text messages, and information about a call being received. The case will be available in black, white, purple, pink, yellow, blue, and mint. A price hasn’t been set for the cases yet, but LG says they will be made available for purchase at the same time the G2 launches.

LG Electronics’ President and CEO Dr. Jong-seok Park said: “LG’s newest premium accessory delivers practical and stylish options while protecting the smartphone, which for many consumers is a significant investment. Our smartphone designers have in mind the type of case they’d like to see on their designs. So it made a lot of sense for LG designers to share with our customers their vision of the perfect accessory.”

According to the leaks that have surfaced thus far, the LG G2 will feature a 5.2-inch display, and inside will host a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2GHz processor with 2GB of RAM. Around back, users will reportedly find a 13-megapixel camera, with the software said to be Jelly Bean 4.2.2. As always, we’ll have all the official details for you next month, so stay tuned!

[UPDATE] LG has posted a video (in Korean) showing what you could do with the LG G2 QuickWindow case, watch the video below!

ASUS Could Deliver Extremely Thin Tablet

ASUS Could Deliver Extremely Thin TabletDo you remember a point in time when phones (this was in an age where smartphones do not yet exist, and Nokia was sitting pretty atop the mobile phone market with their ginormous share) started to become smaller and smaller in size, and if I am not mistaken, Panasonic did carry the tag of having the smallest phone in the world at one point in time, while Nokia and their collection of 88XX handsets dominated the high end phone scene. Well, it seems that the opposite has happened with smartphones – the bigger they get, the better they are, with phablets making quite a splash recently. ASUS, a name that is associated with motherboards as well as an inkling of a US smartphone debut next year, is said to be working on an extremely thin tablet which will be revealed sometime down the road.

As at press time, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is the thinnest tablet in the market, measuring a mere 6.9mm thin, although Tech2 did report that ASUS will be churning out a tablet that is even thinner than that – we are talking about just 6mm thin. I would loathe to have something so thin, as placing it in my bag, I might forget that it is there and apply unnecessary pressure which could crack the screen if I am not careful.

XiaoMi Mi3 Launch Delayed To September (Rumor)

XiaoMi Mi3 Launch Delayed To September (Rumor)We did have pretty high hopes for the XiaoMi Mi3 smartphone, where even as recent as this morning, the folks over at XiaoMi did show us a glimpse of what could be in due time, where a red cloth covered a new, unreleased device. Most folks would have placed their money on this yet to be unveiled device as the XiaoMi Mi3, where in the past, it was spotted on an AnTuTu benchmark bearing the NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor. However, the latest bit of rumors making their way from China pointed out that the XiaoMi Mi3 will in all probability, drop Tegra 4 due to issues with the chipset, not to mention the smartphone will also be delayed to September.

Apparently, talks between XiaoMi and NVIDIA have broken down because both parties could not arrive at an agreement, and this has led XiaoMi to turn to Qualcomm to provide a processor solution, so who knows, we might end up seeing the XiaoMi Mi3 run on the Snapdragon 800 chipset instead down the road. Are you disappointed to hear of the XiaoMi Mi3′s delay?

Zynga reportedly had three top executives resign in July

It is no secret that Zynga, maker of several popular Facebook games, has been having considerable financial trouble over the past months. Earlier this month, Microsoft’s Don Mattrick went on to become the company’s CEO, and following this three top executives have resigned from their position. The information comes from sources said to be familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg.

zynga

According to these sources, the executives who retired are Senior Vice President of Games John Osvald, Vice President of Zynga’s Casino Division Jesse Janosov, and Vice President of Games Nathan Etter. As Bloomberg pointed out, Mr. Etter has since updated his LinkedIn profile to show his current job as being with Disney’s interactive division.

If true, this would be the latest in a long line of high-level employees who have left Zynga since late 2011, an unfortunate move for the company that further signifies its various financial trouble. Such is the result of a steady decline in demand for its games, of which includes the not-as-popular-as-they-used-to-be Mafia Wars and FarmVille.

The story of Zynga’s troubles began a bit after it made its initial public offering in December of 2011. At its top, the company was the maker whose games were most in demand on Facebook, something that helped prompt a massive $1 billion IPO. Since that time, other companies have moved in with their own games, of which several are now among the top most played on the social network.

In a somewhat bitter twist of irony, several of the workers who left Zynga have moved on to create their own online game companies that now compete with their former employer, among them being TapZen and JuiceBox Games. It is yet to be seen whether Mattrick will turn the company around, but if the rumor is true, it would seem at least three executives weren’t confident that would happen.

Google Shopper Bites The Dust

Google Shopper Bites The DustGoogle has shuttered some of its services in the past which the Internet search giant deemed was not performing as expected, or have outlived their usefulness to the masses, with Google Reader’s shutdown earlier this month being the most recent high profile “victim”. Well, here is another Google service that will bite the dust, although less people will miss it compared to Google Reader. The Google service in question would be the Google Shopper app, and this particular app for the Android as well as iOS platforms will experience a shutdown this coming August 30th.

According to Google’s Commerce blog, they mentioned that “76% of shoppers use the web to research purchases and 57% of people use mobile devices to help them shop smarter.” Unfortunately, it seems that majority of the research was done via Google Search, rendering the Google Shopper app pretty much redundant if you were to take the majority point of view into consideration. Personally speaking, just how many purchases have you made using Google Shopper on your mobile device, and do your online shopping habits jive with Google’s statement concerning your use of Google Search in purchase research?

LG G2 QuickWindow case revealed ahead of phone’s unveiling

LG G2 QuickWindow case revealed ahead of phone's unveiling

The curtains on the LG G2 won’t be pulled back until August 7th, but that hasn’t stopped the South Korean firm from announcing a case for the smartphone. Dubbed QuickWindow, the sheath sports a slot on its front that reveals a portion of the device’s screen à la Samsung’s S View Cover. Just slide a finger against the exposed display and a special QuickView UI will light up the area with incoming call details, text messages, a clock, weather report, alarm or music player. Though a release date for the G2 is still MIA, the case is set to launch alongside the phone in black, blue, mint, pink, purple, white and yellow. In a world filled with case leaks for unannounced hardware, we can’t help but feel strange seeing a bonafide cover before we’ve officially laid eyes on the device it’s made for.

ASUS Could Enter US Smartphone Market In 2014

ASUS Could Enter US Smartphone Market In 2014Up until today, ASUS has had pretty decent success in the tablet world, especially when they are the ones behind the Nexus 7 tablet as well as the recently announced Nexus 7 2 from Google. Well, on their own, there is also the good looking Transformer series that fly the ASUS banner high, but where smartphones are concerned, you can say that ASUS has remained pretty much on the sidelines without any notable releases to challenge the flagships of other manufacturers. Well, there was the PadFone, a kind of hybrid setup which saw a smartphone docked into a larger tablet, in addition to the FonePad, which is a smaller tablet that does voice calls and messaging, too.

ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih did mention in an interview with AllThingsD that ASUS intends to roll out their first smartphone in the US sometime in 2014. While ASUS did roll out their smartphones in other regions before this, the US market was cited to be a challenging one due to the dominance between Apple and Samsung where the high-end side is concerned, while other companies do flood the low-end market, too. Do you think that ASUS has cause for optimism in a US smartphone release?
