No jail time for Olympus bosses who committed $1.7 billion accounting fraud

No jail time for Olympus execs who committed $17 billion accounting fraud

You might think a harmless white collar crime would escape the wheels of justice. After all, what’s a little $1.7 billion accounting scandal in the grand scheme of things? As it turns out, you wouldn’t be far wrong: none of the three senior figures sentenced in Japan today for falsifying Olympus Corp.’s financial accounts have been sent to jail. Former Chairman Tsuyoshi Kikukawa received a three-year suspended sentence, in light of the fact that he didn’t make the original decision to hide the firm’s financial losses, while a former executive VP and a former auditing officer also got suspended sentences after making similar defenses. The company itself was fined $7 million.

Meanwhile, the two men accused of starting the fraud, former presidents Masatoshi Kishimoto and Toshiro Shimoyama, have escaped all charges because, as reported by Kyodo News a couple of months ago, too much time has elapsed since the original crime. Oh well. If there’s any upside to this sorry saga, we guess it’s the fact that the whistleblower who lost his job after exposing the scandal, former CEO Michael Woodford, eventually saw some restitution.

‘So You Think You Can Dance’: Two Eliminated At Top Of Show Still Must Perform Later (VIDEO)

Once again, “So You Think You Can Dance” is shaking things up. After losing their elimination show, they had to get creative and start eliminating people during the performance show. This season, Nigel Lythgoe and company decided the best solution was to eliminate those contestants at the top of the show … and then still have them perform later with their partner.

It seemed to be a bit of a shock to the four dancers who found themselves having to dance for their lives. After their solo performances, Nigel told them he wasn’t impressed. “When you’re dancing for your life on this program, I want to feel as though you are truly dancing for your existence in this program.”

Carlos and Brittany became the first two casualties of Season 10. But should they have to dance again later after they’ve been cut? Especially when that performance could determine their partner’s fate in the competition! TVLine doesn’t think this new elimination format is a good idea at all. “It’s a move that potentially puts the eliminated contestant’s partner at risk,” they wrote. “What if the evictee phones it in, or can’t recover from the bad news in time to truly brrrring it?”

DNP

The R6100 is the latest addition to Netgear’s 2013 router lineup and retails for an easier-to-justify price than its siblings. For $100, the 802.11ac-generating square will connect to the new Macbook Air’s upgraded wireless, with a dual 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz a/b/g/n antenna ensuring compatibility with your first-gen Zune. Like the R6200, the now-available R6100 hits 1200 Mbps combined and packs Ethernet for wired connections. It doesn’t hit the speeds of the R6300, but, for half the money, what’s 550 Mbps among friends?

USA Network’s Anywhere Plus iOS app adds episode viewing

USA network brings Anywhere Plus app to iTunes with cableless viewing for some shows

Like many, many (many) other programmers, NBC Universal’s USA Network has had its own iOS app, USA Anywhere, for quite some time. However, users have been disappointed with the lack of past episode availability, among other foibles, so USA has just taken the wraps off a new app called Anywhere Plus, available for free on iTunes. You’ll now be able to watch all its programs a day after they air and back episodes for certain shows, assuming you’re signed up for the network with a cable provider. Even if you’re not, selected episodes are now available along with behind-the-scenes clips, interviews and the like. You’ll also get a program guide and the usual social network bells and whistles, so if you’ve been looking to get your Psych or Burn Notice fix on the go, hit the source.

‘Catfish: The TV Show’: Iraq War Veteran Confronts Boyfriend Who Lied About His Identity (VIDEO)

It was a difficult journey for Iraq war veteran Anthony on “Catfish: The TV Show.” He already knew his boyfriend of one year, Marq, wasn’t who he said he was, And yet, he still went through with meeting him face to face. If nothing else, it could give him closure.

He connected with Marq after returning from combat. Anthony was dealing with depression, and found that Marq was as well. They were able to talk to one another about their issues, and began to grow closer. Eventually, they were talking every day on the phone. Anthony even went to visit Marq, traveling from Houston to Mississippi, but Marq stood him up. He later claimed he’d been carjacked.

Things started to fall apart when Anthony discovered that Marq’s pictures were of someone else. Marq got angry and denied it, but Anthony knew better. So he agreed to go and confront Marq, where he was proved right. Marq looked nothing like his pictures. In fact, his name wasn’t even Marq — it was Framel.

Titanfall is first-ever game to receive six E3 Game Critics Awards

At the 2013 E3, Titanfall became the first-ever game to receive a half-dozen Game Critic Awards, winning in every nominated category. The game is slated for the PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, and was the brainchild of Jason West and Vince Zampella, both of whom previously worked with Infinity Wards, perhaps best known for the Call of Duty franchise.

Titanfall

Titanfall – an online science-fiction multiplayer game – is Respawn Entertainment’s first title, making this a particularly notable achievement. The categories in which it was nominated (and thusly won) is comprised of Best of Show, Best Original Game, Best Console Game, Best Action Game, Best PC Game, and Best Online Multiplayer. The title is slated to hit shelves next year.

Other games that won GCAs include Need For Speed: Rivals as the best racing game, The Elder Scrolls Online as the best RPG, Tearaway as the best handheld/mobile game offering, Watch Dogs for the best action adventure game, NHL 14 for best sports game, Fantasia: Music Evolved for best social/casual game, Transistor for best downloadable game, and Total War: Rome 2 as the best strategy offering.

Breaking down the various awards, EA came out the biggest winner, taking 8 of the 15 awards for itself. The PC beat out console platforms with 11 awards, while the Microsoft’s Xbox consoles (360 and One) scored 10. Sony came in second with the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 nabbing three and four awards, respectively, while the Wii U won one, as did the PS Vita.

And finally, the Best Hardware/Peripheral award went to Oculus Rift. The Game Critics Award is composed of 30 North American media companies that commonly cover the gaming industry, with the E3 Awards being an annual event. This event was held at the E3 Expo in LA last month on June 11 through 13.

‘America’s Got Talent’: Chicago Boyz Make Jump Rope Both Cool And Dangerous (VIDEO)

There have been plenty of acrobatic troupes and plenty of jump rope routines on the “America’s Got Talent” stage. But the Chicago Boyz raised the ante considerably during their impressive routine. They took a 9-year-old boy and used him as a jump rope.

Luckily, that wasn’t the only trick this group had. They showed impressive acrobatics with flips and jumps, and they did plenty of difficult moves through two spinning ropes, with no noticeable mistakes. But it was certainly the boy-as-rope trick that got the most attention.

“We see so many people up here, day in and day out, who have talent, but they have no act,” said Howard Stern. “This jump-roping and push-ups, I can’t do either one. Then, to take this little man here and turn him into a human jump-rope is beyond exciting.”
