Netflix gains exclusive web streaming with New Girl

It would appear that the burgeoning comedy series New Girl will become Netflix next exclusive online series – and not just because Zooey Deschanel thinks it’s cute to watch television on a notebook. This deal appears to be kicking the show out from Hulu where it’s called home since birth – now you’ll be watching the full series on the big red network instead.

This is also only the latest in a line of exclusive deals that web-based video streaming companies have initiated. The show itself will still be shown on television, and indeed you will not be able to see episodes any earlier than you’d have been able on Hulu, but here you’ll get the whole mess of them at once if you wish.

This show has been on for several seasons and, for a while last season, had been rumored to be going the way of the dodo due to mixed reviews. Here it would seem that the cast and crew are ready to stick around for some time to come.

The addition of this show to Netflix exclusive series of shows is a bit more symbolic than it is game-changing. Netflix collection of home-made series grows at a rate roughly the same as they’ve added shows that appear on television before they hit the web, and with mid-tier additions like New Girl making their way to the network, it may only be a matter of time before they grab hold of more big-name beasts.

And keep shows alive, as well. How else would a show like Arrested Development been able to have a bonus season if not for the big N?

New album from ex-Groupon CEO fails to crack iTunes Top 100

Mason, before his musical career took off.

I confess that I have never bought a Groupon, because it always seemed to require paying money to do something I didn’t want to do.

I feared I might feel the same way about listening to former Groupon CEO Andrew Mason’s new album “Hardly Workin’.”

I had understood that Mason was a bit of a wag and a prankster, and I thought that when his opus hit iTunes Tuesday morning there might be, well, a Groupon. Or at least a deal.

With only seven tracks, there was surely that possibility.

And yet, when I went to the iTunes store, I discovered that the price of these seven little ditties was $9.99 (or $6.93 if you buy the tracks individually — but then you don’t get the no doubt unmissable “digital booklet” that comes with the album). This struck me as something of a Group(Turn)off.

I therefore listened only to snippets.

But I had been told the lyrics were quite outstanding. They are already being analyzed at RapGenius. Moreover, Mashable told me this was a serious work of art.

Indeed, it was as if Tom Peters and Bob D… [Read more]

Meet Styx and Kerberos, Pluto’s newly named moons

Meet Styx and Kerberos, Pluto's newly named moons

SETI’s best known for its search for sentient life in the cosmos, but when the Hubble space telescope found a pair of new moons orbiting Pluto (at SETI’s behest), it decided to do some planetoid naming, too. Today, SETI announced those names: Styx and Kerberos. The institute didn’t grant titles to the moons itself, however. Instead, it put the onus on the public to come up with the proper names — with instructions from the International Astronomical Union (IAU) that the nomenclature have something to do with the mythological underworld known as Hades. Voting lasted for two weeks, and SETI received over 450,000 regular votes and around 30,000 write-ins. Though many wished for the moons to be named for Stephen Colbert or the Romulan home world, the IAU found those choices to be unfit for the new moons. Instead, we have Styx (the river that separates earth from the underworld) and Kerberos (the three-headed dog that serves as the guardian to Hades) — who said studying Classics was a waste of time?

Stunning Video Is Animated With Nothing but Light and Freezing Breath

Considering that basic projectors are fairly dated pieces of tech at this point, the number of people still putting them to ingenius, wildly creative use is almost baffling. And this recently released video from the band Travis is no exception. With nothing but their trusty projector and some likely hyperventilating, they were able to turn their own breath into the beautifully ethereal animations you see above.

HTC confirms One S will no longer receive Android updates

HTC confirms One S will no longer receive Android updates

It’s not a Nexus, so suspend your disbelief: HTC’s One S will not be getting any further Android updates. That’s right, One S owners, your device is now officially a relic. In a statement released to the press, HTC today confirmed that the mid-ranger, which bowed last year in tandem with the One X, will remain frozen on 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. That means current owners will have to look elsewhere (read: developer forums) for unofficial access to Sense 5 ROMs and the latest tweaks Google’s packed into Android 4.2 updates. We can’t really lament the loss of BlinkFeed, but it sure would’ve been nice to see HTC port Zoe over to the device. At the very least, this makes a strong case for that Google Play edition One and its promise of consistent updates.

Legoleg: Woman builds self a prosthetic leg from Legos

This may be the most colorful prosthetic leg ever created.

(Credit: Video screenshot by Amanda Kooser/CNET)

Christina Stephens has been chronicling her journey from a foot crush injury through amputation and adapting to a prosthetic leg on her Facebook page, Amputee OT. While her standard prosthetic leg is custom made and fitted to her, she’s also willing to experiment a bit, as shown by her Legoleg, a prosthetic leg crafted from Legos.

Stephens, an occupational therapist and clinical researcher, got the idea from a research lab co-worker, who joked she should make a leg from Legos. Most people would have laughed and left it there. Stephens laughed and went home to make it happen.
