Nuforce Icon DAC and amp arrives for Android, Mac and PC, makes digital tunes sound acceptable to audiophiles

NuForce has been pumping out high end audio gear for the digitally inclined for years, and its latest effort is the Icon DAC and amp for Android, Mac and PC. It shares the same aluminum construction as the Icon iDo amp aimed at iDevice owners that was released in 2011. However, the latest Icon adds a few new features. While it still has analog RCA and digital coax output, the new model offers RCA and 3.5mm analog input as well as a USB connection for pulling in audio. Additionally, it can drive 600-ohm headphones thanks to its 8V output amp, and its DAC supports sampling rates up to 96kHz, 32 bits of resolution and direct stream digital decoding. It’s available now for $325 for folks with Windows 7 or 8 PCs, Macs and Android devices running 4.1.1 or higher.

2013 MacBook Air Bug Causing Intermittent Video Output Loss

2013 MacBook Air Bug Causing Intermittent Video Output Loss

Another day, another bug. It has only been a little over one month since Apple released the 2013 MacBook Air at Worldwide Developers Conference. The refreshed lineup doesn’t come with any major design changes, but it does come with Intel’s all new Haswell processors. Users have reported a couple of bugs in the past as well, some complained that their new MacBook Air would repeatedly and unexpectedly drop the Wi-Fi connection. Others said volume would fluctuate on its own during video playback. A new thread on Apple Support Forums contains complaints from users about intermittent video loss on the display, the bug seems to be affecting both 11 and 13 inch 2013 MacBook Air models.

Judging by the complaints on the thread, the issue seems to be more persistent when the MacBook Air is on battery power, while some claim to have experienced it on AC power too. Basically the laptop itself doesn’t shut down or go in to sleep mode, the display goes dark as the screen flashes intermittently. It is not clear as of now if this issue is hardware or software based. Apple is yet to advise users on a possible fix.

iTunes 11.1 beta arrives with iTunes Radio built in

Right on the heels of iOS 7 beta 4 for developers comes the release of iTunes 11.1 in beta mode, appearing this afternoon with iTunes Radio ready for action. Announced at Apple’s developer event WWDC 2013, iTunes Radio is a personalized streaming music internet radio station service that becomes more personalized the more the user listens to it. This system will also be built-in and/or available to the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, PC, and Apple TV.

With iTunes Radio comes the requirement for OS X 10.7 or later, and usability limited to the USA for for time being. Inside you’ll see such categories as ’80s Dancy Party, Artists on Tour, Decade of iTunes, and simple concepts like “Alternative.” There’s connectivity with Twitter’s “#music” initiative with a category called Trending on Twitter as well.

You’ll be able to make your own radio stations with music you own, this service connecting with iTunes Match for advertisement-free streaming. There’s also a free version of iTunes Radio with “the occasional ad”, as Apple notes. With iTunes Match, music is all uploaded to Apple’s iCloud where it can be streamed with a web connection.

While there will be exclusive iTunes Radio songs and Siri will be able to work to command the changing and updating of stations, at the moment the service is limited. It’s time for developers to test this service out well before the public is able to get their hands on it. Time to connect Apple TV-based iTunes Radio to the desktop.

The Best Thing You'll Read About Google Glass

Gary Shteyngart, novelist and fond admirer of Koreans, wrote maybe the best explanation of what it’s like to use Google Glass for The New Yorker this week. Shteyngart was one of the first to receive Glass, as part of the Glass Explorers program, and he writes about a week’s worth of the telling little moments of using it.

iTunes 11.1 Beta With iTunes Radio Released For Developers

iTunes 11.1 Beta With iTunes Radio Released For Developers

When Apple releases iOS 7 to the public later this year, presumably in fall, a new version of iTunes will also be released. Up till now Apple has seeded four betas of iOS 7 to registered developers. The company is expected to seed two more before finally releasing the GM build prior to the public release. Today alongside iOS 7 beta 4, Apple also seeded iTunes 11.1 beta. This beta version of iTunes comes with Apple’s Pandora-killer service called iTunes Radio, a service that is fully integrated in iOS 7 as well.

Right now only registered developers have access to this software as well as the iTunes Radio service. Apple does not release beta firmware to the public. Both iOS 7 and iTunes Radio were unveiled last month at WWDC 2013. Apple had long been rumored to be developing a Pandora like music streaming service, many believed that it undercut Pandora itself. Nevertheless, the folks at Pandora are nonplussed about iTunes Radio, they believe it only brings Apple at par with other companies in the music streaming niche. iTunes 11.1 with iTunes Radio is now available for download through Apple’s developer center. Nexus 7 did not outsell iPad in Japan according to IDC

Earlier this year it was claimed by several news sources, then quoted again just this month by Google, that the Nexus 7 outsold the iPad in Japan in the fourth quarter of 2012. This assertion comes from a report by market research firm BCN, as quoted by Nikkei and re-published by several publications since early this year. Here after Google repeated the claim at their Nexus 7 reboot event, a bit more information on BCN’s study has come to light – as have some rather contradictory numbers from research firm IDC.

woupwtmk-580x294

According to BCN’s claim, Google’s Nexus 7 took 44.4 percent of the Japanese tablet market while the iPad took just 40.1 percent of that same market in the month of December. This study was done on a total of 2,400 electronics stores throughout the nation, with the following notable exclusions:

• Softbank
• KDDI
• Apple Store

According to Bylines, BCN covers a total of 16% of tablet-carrying sales channels inside Japan. With a relatively major gap in stores covered in this study – especially considering the relatively unique nature in which Apple sells its tablets in Apple-exclusive stores – the simple assertion that the Nexus 7 outsold the iPad across Japan should never have been made.

We’ve also had a chat with IDC Research Director for Tablets, Tom Mainelli, who contests BCN’s numbers with a rather different view:

“Yes, I was a bit puzzled by Google’s claims. We count the Nexus 7 as part of ASUS’s shipments, and looking at our Japan numbers for 4Q12–which represent shipments into the channel–Apple shipped about 773K iPad units versus about 350K Nexus 7 units for ASUS.” – Tom Mainelli, IDC Research Director, Tablets

Since BCN’s study was a survey, rather than a run-down of shipment numbers, BCN isn’t technically wrong in reporting the information they’ve found – it’s the suggestion that their information represented the full market results that’s misleading. While we’ve got to consider the limited nature of BCN’s study and the fact that they did not aim to report the full quarter, the result is clear: the Nexus 7 is doing exceedingly well, but it’s still not outselling the iPad in Japan, not by a long shot.

Apple Seeds iOS 7 Beta 4

Apple Seeds iOS 7 Beta 4

We reported earlier today that Apple was expected to seed iOS 7 beta 4 today. The release was actually expected last week, but given the fact that Apple Developer Center was down for almost eight days, iOS 7 beta 4 comes later than expected. Apart from a host of items listed in the changelog, the latest beta of iOS 7 brings a number of improvements and bug fixes.

Apple has reportedly made a couple of subtle tweaks to the lock screen. To the left of the “slide to unlock” text an arrow pointing right has been added. The graphics for quick launch and notification center are also said to have been changed to straight lines as opposed to arrows. Beta firmware is only available to registered Apple developers, who can either download it from the Developer Center or on their devices over-the-air if they have a previous beta of iOS 7 up and running. A recent rumor suggests that Apple may releases two more betas before finally rolling out the GM build. Apple has said that it will release iOS 7 for the public this fall, an exact date is yet to be provided.
