ZTE Open, the first Firefox OS phone for consumers, launches tomorrow for $90

ZTE Open, the first Firefox OS phone for consumers, launches tomorrow for $90

When Mozilla said devices running Firefox OS would be cheap, we didn’t know they’d be this cheap. Telefónica has just tweeted that the ZTE Open will be launching in Spain tomorrow for €69, which translates to around $90 and is a good $30 less than the cheapest developer unit we’d seen until now. And here’s where it gets pretty wild: that price includes €30 ($39) of airtime for prepaid customers. When we played with the Open back in February at Mobile World Congress, we weren’t exactly blown away by it, but we’re arguably not the target demographic. The real question is whether Spaniards will be willing to sacrifice access to Google’s services and ecosystem with devices like the Vodafone Smart Mini now selling for as little as €49 ($65).

Where the Hell Is the True North Pole?

The North Pole is just at the top of the Earth, right? Well, not really: there isn’t really a ‘top’ of a sphere spheroid and, anyway, depending on how you measure things the pole can be in one of many different spots. So which one’s right?

Kate Moss to design mobile accessory range: ‘My phone’s as much a part of my look as my bag or shoes’

Kate Moss launches mobile accessory range, says her phone is 'as much a part of my look as my bag or shoes'

British model, high-street fashion dabbler and, er, Glastonbury attendee Kate Moss is working on an exclusive collection of phone accessories for UK retailer Carphone Warehouse. Quoted in a press release that doesn’t describe or feature any products from the range, she says she’ll be treating the partnership “like any other fashion collaboration,” and was apparently heavily involved in the design process. Although there’s no word on what the accessories will be, we’d assume an iPhone case of some sort is a given. Carphone Warehouse promises a full range of products when the line launches later this summer, and we’re looking forward to comparing the fruits of the partnership against the high-end phone peripherals that are already being peddling to well-heeled UK phone owners.

Firefox OS phone launches Tuesday in Spain at $3 a month

Firefox OS, shown here on the ZTE Open, has a gallery app, but if you want to share photos, you have to do so one at a time.

It’s not every day that a new mobile operating system arrives, but Tuesday will be one of them as Telefonica begins selling the inexpensive ZTE Open with Mozilla’s Firefox OS in Spain.

The move marks the commercial beginning of an effort by phone makers and network operators to use Mozilla’s open-source, browser-based operating system to reclaim power in the mobile market lost to Apple and Google.

The phone itself costs 69 euros ($90), including 30 euros ($39) of pay-as-you-go credit — or for those who sign up for a two-year contract, for 2.38 euros ($3.10) per month. That’s a lot cheaper than most of the new Android and iOS smartphones on the market today that consumers have flocked to and that Firefox OS is competing with.

The ZTE Open won’t impress smartphone power users who want more than its 3.5-inch 480×320-pixel touchscreen, 3.2MP camera, 256MB RAM, and 512MB flash memory that’s boosted with an included 4GB microSD card. But it’s not designed to win them over; it’s more for new and cost-conscious smartphone buyers, Yotam Benami, Telefonica’… [Read more]
