Samsung Releases Exclusive Apps For Its Windows Phone Devices

Samsung Releases Exclusive Apps For Its Windows Phone DevicesOne of the ways Windows Phone manufacturers separate themselves from the rest of the herd is by offering up exclusive apps which are only available for a particular manufacturer’s device. Given that Windows Phone hardware is pretty much the same across the board, with some minor differences and features, like Nokia focusing on camera specs, or a different design, it can be hard to choose a brand to go with. Well the good news for Samsung fans is that if you were looking for a reason to get a Samsung Windows Phone handset, like the ATIV S or the ATIV S Neo, Samsung has released two exclusive apps: MangaCamera and Paper Artist.

Granted these aren’t exactly deal-breakers or deal-makers, they might be appreciated by Samsung users who might otherwise feel that the South Korean company might be focusing on its Android efforts and neglecting its Windows Phone division. The apps are photo-related and with MangaCamera, it basically gives your photos a cartoon-like effect (pictured above to the left), while Paper Artist will allow effects to be added to photos, like a watercolor-type effect as pictured above to the right. Hopefully there will be more to follow in the future, but for now Samsung owners should be pretty pleased with this.

Microsoft Wants To Ban Steven Sinofsky From Working At Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, And More

Microsoft Wants To Ban Steven Sinofsky From Working At Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, And MoreBack in 2012 you might recall that Steven Sinofsky, who at that time was the executive at Microsoft in charge of products like Office, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Surface, was leaving the company reportedly due to Steve Ballmer’s refusal to appoint him as a potential successor. While Sinofsky now teaches at Harvard, it seems that Microsoft has recently made a legal request to the US SEC where they basically listed some of the companies that Sinofsky will not be allowed to work, at least until the end of 2013. According to the SEC filing, the companies Sinofsky will not be allowed to work at include Amazon, Apple, EMC, Facebook, Google, Oracle, and VMWare, none of which are surprising given that they are all of Microsoft’s competitors not just in the mobile space, but in hardware and software as well.  It is expected that Sinofsky will adhere to these “rules” if he wishes to receive the promised $14 million retirement package from Microsoft, but come 2014 it will definitely be interesting to see where he ends up.

Instagram No Longer Deleting Posts By Third-Party Apps

Instagram No Longer Deleting Posts By Third Party AppsWhile Windows Phone is a pretty smooth operating system, what it lacks is a bunch of official apps that iOS and Android users are enjoying, and one of the big ones is none other than Instagram. This has resulted in developers creating third-party alternatives that would provide Windows Phone users with the Instagram experience, albeit not from the official app, but recently this has resulted in Instagram deleting posts made by third-party apps. Well the good news is that if you thought this would be the end of your Instagram posting via apps such as Instance, you can rest easy because it seems that Instagram has recently made some changes that will now allow third-party apps to continue uploading photos to its website.

It is not clear if Instagram has reversed their decision out of good will or if it was a mistake that wasn’t intended in the first place, and now they are fixing it. Instagram had previously stated that they are not seeking to block third-party apps, which we guess would be pretty mean-spirited of them considering that there are no plans for an official Instagram app for Windows Phone at the moment, although last we heard Nokia was hard at work at bringing Instagram to Windows Phone.

The UPS Store to offer 3D printing service in select San Diego locations (video)

DNP UPS to offer 3D printing in select San Diego stores video

Today, The UPS Store announced its plan to bring 3D printing services to the masses. The shipping company will soon roll out Stratasys Uprint SE Plus printers to 6 locations in San Diego to test out the new service; it’ll be aimed at small businesses, start-ups and retail customers in need of a professional grade model to produce things like prototypes and artistic renderings. At $20,900 a pop, Stratasys printers aren’t exactly the kind of gadget you’d purchase for home use, so their availability at UPS stores is a pretty major step towards making high quality 3D printing an accessible option for the common man. Though the company is starting small, it hopes to expand the service nationwide, provided that the San Diego experiment proves successful. For more info, check out the video after the break.

How Horrified Are You by Your Facebook Search History?

How Horrified Are You by Your Facebook Search History?

If you’ll recall way back in September, Facebook started keeping track of every single time you compulsively searched for that one (or two, or three, or eight) special person you just can’t get off your mind. But almost as quickly as Facebook search history emerged from the darkest recesses of hell to remind us all of how neurotic we really are, people were pretty much able to forget about it and go back to their excessive stalking.

Guy Building 3D-Printed Aston Martin DB4 Replica

3D printing is pretty amazing. You can create anything you want as long as you have a big enough printer, and plenty of patience. You can even make a 1961 Series II Aston Martin DB4.

That’s what Ivan Sentch from Auckland, New Zealand is doing. He is making his dream car using 3D printing with his second generation Solidoodle printer. The plan is for the full scale replica of the DB4 to have a 250 HP Nissan Skyline drivetrain and fiberglass body with and engine salvaged from a 250 GTO replica. I’d say it is coming along very well judging by the images.

It is estimated the project will cost him about $5,000(USD) and he has been working on this project from almost eight months so far. Not bad, given the fact that an actual DB4 is so rare that it could cost as much as $1.6 million.

Tokyo Will Retrofit Its Skyscrapers To Prep For the Next Big Quake

Mass dampers—the gigantic weights designed to counteract swaying in skyscrapers—are usually installed during the construction process. But today, a Japanese real estate company announced plans to install six of the devices atop a 39-year-old building in downtown Tokyo.
