MakerPlane’s open source aircraft funding campaign gets off to a slow start (video)

There are some things in this world we’re not sure are improved by the 3D printing process, like firearms and food. Aircraft might also be on that list, but no amount of dubiousness will stand in the way of MakerPlane’s open source plane. The aviation company’s ambitious Indiegogo campaign went live last week (check out the video below), but its quest for funding looks like it’s going to be a major uphill climb. At the time of this writing, the campaign had yet to breach the $800 mark, a far cry from its $75,000 goal. While part of the reason for the slow funding can be chalked up to a certain level of skepticism when it comes to a plane made with 3D printed parts and open sourced avionics software, the lack of plane-related rewards might also be holding the company back from reaching its endgame. For example, a $10,000 pledge will only get your corporate logo on the display craft’s fuselage. That being said, somebody’s got to dream big. Just don’t ask us to get in your homemade plane.

Carlos Vives Poses For ‘Got Milk?’ Campaign With Iconic Moustache

Colombian musician Carlos Vives, currently on a world tour, has joined America’s popular “Got milk?” campaign promoting the benefits of drinking milk.

Vives, 51, appears in an advertisment seated with a guitar in one hand, a glass of milk in the other, and, naturally, sporting the famous “milk moustache.” He says “music for the soul, protein for the body.”

The “Got milk?” ad featuring Carlos Vives will launch in national Hispanic magazines in August, following the countless other celebrities who have taken part in the campaign testifying to their love of milk.

Kate Moss’ Esquire Cover Is Model’s First Men’s Magazine Appearance In 17 Years (PHOTOS)

Just because Kate Moss is approaching her forties doesn’t mean she’s slowing down… or covering up. This year, we’ve seen a clothesless campaign for Versace, a clothesless campaign for self-tanner and now, a near-naked, bejeweled Moss on the cover of Esquire UK.

For her first appearance on the front of a men’s magazine in 17 years (her last was Arena, in 1996), Kate covers up (in comparison to her latest works, at least) in a sheer, bedazzled bodysuit bearing artfully placed oversized crystals. The theme of Esquire’s September issue is “Made In Britain” — and who better to represent the UK than their supermodel crown jewel?

“For too long [Kate Moss] has been monopolised by women’s fashion magazines,” Esquire editor Alex Bilmes says. “So I am thrilled that we’ve persuaded her to front our special issue dedicated to this country’s most stylish people and products. I really can’t imagine anyone better suited to the job.”

Wadah Khanfar Blasts Egyptian Military, Calls Out U.S. ‘Hypocrisy,’ Warns Of ‘Collapse Of The Entire Region’ (VIDEO)

Former Director General of Al Jazeera Wadah Khanfar joined me Monday for a wide-ranging conversation on the ongoing violence in Egypt, slamming the military’s “horrific” crackdown on civilians and accusing the United States of hypocrisy, predicting both civil war in Egypt and the “collapse of the entire region” if there is no real U.S. intervention against military violence there.

Khanfar, whose HuffPost blog post last week focused on the Egyptian military’s role in dragging the country closer to a civil war, said the unprecedented amount of violence the military has carried out against the people in recent days marks “a beginning of a new history where people will give up on democracy and will turn to defend themselves through violence.”

Throughout the interview, Khanfar repeatedly used the word “coup,” calling the recent images of civilians harmed by military “horrific” and saying that “the Arab world did not sleep [two nights ago] watching live the shooting and killing by the military of people who were not armed.”

Margaret Spellings, George W. Bush Foundation President, Calls For Education Legislation Transparency

At a time when there exists an unequal distribution of high-quality teachers and public school closures are being labeled as human rights violations, experts agree improvements in education legislation are a pressing necessity.

Margaret Spellings, the former George W. Bush Administration Education Secretary, joined Huffpost Live at the Aspen Ideas Festival to recommend solutions to the education crisis. Spellings, who was recently appointed as the President of the George W. Bush Foundation, advocated for Congress to reflect more specifically on past legislative results when developing education bills — more specifically the No Child Left Behind Act, which she helped design during her time under the Bush Administration.

“No Child Left Behind, as I said, is way past due for, you know, building on the lessons that we’ve learned in that period of time and making some tweeks and some improvements, and we can and we should do that,” she told Ahmed Shibab-Eldin of HuffPost Live.

Paterno Said Penn State Would Look For Scapegoat On Sandusky Case, McQueary Says

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Longtime Penn State head coach Joe Paterno said that the university mishandled its response to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, a former assistant coach testified Monday.

Mike McQueary was called as a witness in a hearing for three former Penn State officials accused in a cover-up of the scandal. He told the judge that the late Hall of Fame coach had told him over the years that “Old Main screwed up” – referring to university administrators – in response to the allegation against Sandusky.

Zagat rebooted as Google drops fees and revamps apps

Google has revealed new Android and iPhone apps for Zagat, along with a redesigned website, hoping to address critics’ complaints that it has left the restaurant review service to stagnate since acquiring it in late 2011. The new apps now have restaurant news and videos integrated, and Google has dropped the registration and fees, making the ratings accessible to all.

google_zagat

Zagat now offers curated lists for locations, to help cut through the surfeit of choice and break down selections like the spiciest restaurants in New York City, the best San Francisco restaurants to try when everyone else is out of town, and the places to pick when you’re dining on an expense account in London’s Canary Wharf. They’re linked into Google’s existing search and map browsing, of course.

So far, nine cities – Austin, Boston, Chigaco, LA, NYC, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. in the US, and London in Europe – are supported with the new content. However, Google says it expects to expand to fifty locations worldwide.

Google “New Zagat” overview:

That will eventually include not only restaurants and nightlife, but hotels, recommended shops, and other points of interest. In the meantime, though, you may find that a city previously supported is now no longer included; Google says it will “soon make our existing ratings and reviews” available on the main site.

The new features and apps are a much-anticipated change to Zagat, which has been generally under-capitalized on since Google acquired it in October 2011. Then, the $151m deal was described as a way for the search company to bolster its review portfolio, though beyond Google+ Local integration there was little sign of product development.

Now, you’ll need a Google+ account to access the updated functionality, but there’s no subscription fee. Meanwhile, Google+ Local is being axed on August 7, meaning the dedicated Zagat app will be pushed to the fore.

Fly around Saturn in gorgeous short film

(Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute)

Cassini has been in orbit around Saturn since 2004, surveying the planet, its rings, and its satellites. Currently, it sends back to Earth more than 60 raw photos a day of Saturn in all of its moods, as well as its satellites, and NASA has made these images freely available for public use.

Fabio Di Donato, an Italian IT consultant who likes to make videos in his spare time, has made use of this. He collated more than 200,000 of the Cassini photos taken between 2004 and 2012, processed them from raw to PNG, and edited them together to create a film set to Shostakovich’s Suite for Variety Orchestra: Waltz 2 as played by the Armonie Symphony Orchestra.
