Xbox One and PS4 controller pre-orders now live

You might have already pre-ordered your fancy new Xbox One or PlayStation 4 console, but seeing as how the contents only contain a certain number of controllers, you might want a few more for when you have a lot of friends over for game night. Luckily, neither Microsoft nor Sony want you to be short on controllers come launch day, so they’ve opened up pre-orders for purchasing individual controllers.

With that, we now know the price of both the Xbox One controller and the PS4 DualShock 4 controller. Both are priced at $60, which is the same price that you pay for a single game. Furthermore, Microsoft has also revealed pricing for other accessories as well, including the Xbox One headset.

The headset will cost $25, while the Play and Charge kit for the Xbox One controller will cost $25 as well. You can also grab both a controller and a Play and Charge kit in a bundle for $75, which will save you $10 compared to if you bought the two items separately.

All of these items are available for pre-order on Amazon, or you can visit GameStop, Best Buy, or a Microsoft Store (for Xbox One items) to reserve your own units for launch day. If you’re not aware, the PS4 console does come with a headset, so if you’re thinking about going with the Xbox One, be aware that you’ll have to get the headset separately.

The Microsoft Store also is listing a “Day One” 12-month Xbox Live membership for $60, which is the same price it is currently on the Xbox 360. We’ve heard in the past that Microsoft was changing the system up slightly, but price wasn’t yet disclosed. It seems that it’ll cost the same amount as previously for the time being. There’s also no sign of a family sharing package yet, but we’ll probably hear about that soon.

266369v2-max-250x250

Eric Migicovsky is an unlikely hardware mogul. His first product, the Pebble Smart Watch, came to him after experimenting with watch designs and then caught fire, going from $0 to $10 million in funding on Kickstarter. His watch captured imaginations and inspired a new craze for usable, powerful smart wearables.

He also has excellent taste in hats.

We’ll be talking about what’s next for Pebble, how his retail expansion is going, and what it takes to make a hardware startup in a software-heavy environment. I’ve made it a personal mission to bring cool hardware guys like him onstage for every Disrupt, and I’m pleased that we got the coolest of the cool.

Disrupt SF takes over The San Francisco Design Concourse from September 7 to 11. Tickets are currently on sale here. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, opportunities can be found here.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Student Edition for back-to-school spotters

Ah, parents would definitely love the “back to school” season, as this would mean their little ones (no matter how old a child gets, in the eyes of the parents, he or she would still be considered as “young” or “little”) will have to return to school and get out of their hair, and a more normal pattern of living is established. No more sleeping in late for them, and neither do they have the opportunity to stay up till the wee hours of the morning – it is a life of rigorous discipline, and it is time to score those grades that are required by Ivy League universities in order to gain entry into the hallowed hallways of their prestigious educational institutions. Well, Samsung intends to ride the tide with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Student Edition.

Just what can one expect from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Student Edition? Well, for starters, it will come with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 tablet right out of the box, accompanied by a Desktop Dock as well as Bluetooth keyboard in order for students to create, share and store documents – apart from browsing the Web of course. Not only that, it is said that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Now, we certainly do not want that to happen, do we? The moment one completes his or her homework, perhaps it is time to use the very same tablet to take some time off, and such recreational activities include watching movies or playing games on the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1′s 10-inch display. You can always make full use of the Samsung Media Hub or explore apps on Google Play with this tablet, and turn it into a TV remote thanks to the Smart Remote and built-in IR blaster. Field Trip App Lets You Discover New Stuff in Old Neighborhoods

For kids, field trips are one of the biggest highlights in school. They offer a temporary escape from the dreary confines of the classroom once every few months (or weeks, if they’re lucky.)

Just because you’re all grown up now doesn’t mean you can’t go on field trips anymore.

Field Trip2

You might not be in school anymore, but if you’ve got a smartphone, then a whole new world of possibilities and new discoveries is open to you, right here, right now. Just download the Field Trip app and you’re good to go. It’s an interactive app by Google internal startup NianticLab that shows you cool, unusual, and sometimes historically-rich stuff that can be found around your neighborhood, or wherever you happen to be at the moment.

field trip 2

The app can be customized based on your personal interests, and gathers data from a variety of data sources, including Arcadia, Historvius, TimeOut, Thrillist, Food Network, Zagat, Eater, Atlas Obscura, Dezeen, Daily Secret, Cool Hunting, Freshome, Inhabitat, Songkick and more. It can also be set to automatically notify you when there’s something interesting nearby.

If you’re traveling somewhere, just fire up and the app and get ready to take yourself (and whoever else is with you) on a field trip.

You can download the Field Trip app at Google Play and the iTunes store.

Origin PC’s EON 13-S offers another spin on Clevo’s latest gaming laptop, promises Haswell and Kepler for $1,474

Origin PC's EON 13S offers yet another spin on Clevo's latest gaming laptop, promises Haswell and Kepler for $1,474

Like the look of Digital Storm’s VELOCE gaming notebook, but have strong loyalties with another system builder? Don’t worry — Origin PC has just announced another gaming rig with the exact same chassis: the EON13-S. The similarity is no coincidence, both models are based on the 13.3-inch Clevo W230ST, carefully branded and customized by each company.

Origin’s twist on the laptop includes a 4th Generation Intel Core processor, NVIDIA GTX 765M graphics and up to three storage devices. The company didn’t announce specifics, but Clevo’s own product page outs Intel’s 2.8GHz i7-4900MQ, 2.70GHz i7-4800MQ and 2.40GHz i7-4700MQ chips as possible options. The base model also supports up to 16GB of RAM, though its Digital Storm variant tops out at 8GB. Naturally, Origin says that many of these elements will be customizable and upgradable, with the most frugal configuration ringing in at $1,474. Additionally, customers that order before August 5th can score free overclocking and a gratis Corsair M95 mouse. Not bad, if you’re looking for tiny gaming machine. Check out the company’s official press release after the break.

Nokia said to be prepping Bluetooth 4.0 ‘Treasure Tag’ accessory for Lumias

Nokia said to be prepping Bluetooth 4.0 'Treasure Tag' accessory for Lumias

Nokia is planning to release a Bluetooth accessory for its Lumia lineup called the “Treasure Tag,” according to various sources. A report from The Verge tallies with a previous mention on Yahoo’s message boards that names the tag, which could be a reason Nokia’s adding Bluetooth 4.0 and LE support to Lumias via the impending Amber update. Apparently, the tag features NFC for easy pairing and can be set up and tracked using a Windows Phone 8 app that’ll incorporate Nokia’s LiveSight AR tech. It’s also said that a button on the Treasure Tag will reveal the location of a misplaced phone using an audible notification, if it’s in range of the accessory. It could look like the above diagram, is allegedly launching in “the coming weeks,” and is thought to be one of several planned accessories that’ll make use of the Bluetooth 4.0 standard.

Corning introduces Gorilla Glass NBT for touch-enabled laptops, coming this fall

DNP Corning introduces Gorilla Glass NBT for touchbased laptops, available this fall

While we love our gadgets for their glass-capacitive touchscreens, they can be sensitive to scratches and fingerprints. Corning, best known for protecting our phone and tablet displays, is introducing Gorilla Glass NBT for touch-enabled laptops. This new ultra-strong covering promises enhanced scratch resistance, reduced flaw visibility and better retained strength once a blemish occurs — basically, the same benefits as GG3. Dell is the first manufacturer to jump on-board with NBT and plans to use it on some notebooks this fall. Does this mean you wont have to be nearly as careful when schlepping your computer in a messenger bag? Probably not, but at least your precious displays will be safer from errant kitty paws. PR after the break.
