BitTorrent Sync coming to iOS this week

BitTorrent Sync now available for iOS

BitTorrent promised that its Sync Beta service would get an iOS client, and the company is making good on its word with plans to launch the app this week. As with the Android release, iOS users will get to sync files of any size, send content to other mobile devices and back up photos. And if you’re not carrying an Apple device, BitTorrent still has a small treat in store: it’s rolling out a localization update that supports 10 major Asian and European languages. Whatever your platform of choice, you’ll find more details at the source link.

Bird Photo Booth takes the hard work out of photographing birds

Bird-Photo-Booth

Photography used to be a hard hobby (or profession) to get into. If you wanted to take even decent pictures, you had to spend a good bit of money on equipment and lenses, and then there were the development costs to think of. But these days, almost everyone is carrying a decent camera with them at all times, and there are tons of (relatively) inexpensive solutions for achieving difficult shots. One particularly difficult subject to shoot is a bird. You’ll either need a great lens for shooting them from a safe distance, or truly understand the meaning of patience. That, or get clever.

The Bird Photo Booth is probably the most clever way to take pictures of birds that I’ve seen. After all, what is the one place you can guarantee that you’ll always find birds? A bird feeder. So the idea is to put a camera next to the feeder, so you can snap great, close-up pictures while your feathered friends come in for a bite to eat.

Designed to look like one of the original Polaroid cameras, this device features mounts for either an iPhone, iPod Touch, or GoPro camera, and a macro lens. Then, you can use any WiFi-enabled device to watch, and capture pictures at the perfect moment. You can even use FaceTime to talk to the birds, if that’s your thing. The Bird Photo Booth will set you back $150, and you’ll need to supply the bird feed and camera.

Chromecast For iOS Released

Chromecast For iOS Released

Almost a month after releasing the official Chromecast app for Android, Google today launched the app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The app allows users to setup and configure various settings of their Chromecast dongle. It will also display the status of all dongles connected to a Wi-Fi network, making it easier for the user to find out which dongles in the building are ready to “cast” content.

Google announced Chromecast last month. It is a HDMI dongle which is capable of mirroring content on a television screen from mobile devices nearby such as smartphones and tablets. Content can be beamed from a computer as well. Apps that have a special “cast” button need to be used, since Chromecast doesn’t support local streaming as of now. It costs just $35 and lets users stream content from YouTube, Netflix, Google Play Store and the Chrome web browser. The app is used to setup the dongle to the Wi-Fi network as well as configure settings such as the Wi-Fi password and device name. Chromecast for iOS work with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch provided that they are running iOS 5.1 firmware or higher. The official Chromecast app is available as a free download from iTunes App Store.

‘Star Drunk’ is ‘Drunk History’ for sci-fi geeks

That's one way to run a ship.

Drunkenness isn’t just for soccer hooligans and certain gamers anymore.

It’s also become a key part of producing some of the summer’s best comedy, like “Drunk History,” which recently graduated from Funny or Die to Comedy Central, or this music video that can be viewed at various stages of drunkenness thanks to lots of beers and thousands of YouTube annotations.

While both are indeed hilarious, after you watch the drunk short film below, I think you’ll agree with me that no genre is better suited for inebriated writing and acting than sci-fi.

California Might Deem Revenge Porn A Criminal Offense

Its no secret that there are vindictive people out there who post photos and videos once taken in private on the internet to shame their ex-lovers. They provide the content for ‘revenge porn’ websites, which have become a thriving source of revenue for people who run such websites. Its bad enough to have an embarrassing photo being posted online, one can’t even fathom the horror of finding a photo or video that lets the world peek into some of their most intimate moments. The California State Assembly debates a bill today that aims to deem revenge porn a criminal misdemeanor, those found guilty are likely to face up to one year in prison.

According to this bill, people who upload pictures and videos which show a person in “a state of full or partial undress in any area in which the person being photographed or recorded has a reasonable expectation of privacy,” “with the intent to cause serious emotional distress” will face jail time. Roping in uploaders is just one part of the solution. The websites that host such content are free from any civil liability because Section 230 of the Federal Communications Decency Act says that third-party platforms don’t have any liability for content generated by users. Such sites have been subjected to lawsuits though, and various advocacy groups believe that they should be held liable as well. Once a compromising photo or video ends up on a website, it usually spreads like fire so much so that it becomes virtually impossible to petition each and every website to take it down. School district hires company to follow kids’ Facebook, Twitter

Authorities like to be tuned in.

Safety has rather become the mantra of authorities over the last few years.

Government exists, so we’re told, to keep the people safe. As opposed to, say, happy, employed, strong, proud or free.

A school district in Southern California is also committed to the safety of its kids. And, given that social media sites are where kids are at these days, it’s decided to keep tabs on every single public post its kids are making.

Naturally, the Glendale Unified School District doesn’t have the time to do this itself. So it’s hired an outside company to do its tab-keeping for it.

As CBS Los Angeles reports, the district chose Geo Listening, a company that specializes in following kids’ Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube feeds.

“The whole purpose is student safety,” the district’s superintendent Richard Sheehan told CBS.

So now every single piece of social blurting is now being watched by Big Geo.

Sheehan explained that the system works by looking for keywords. He gave examples of how potentially suicidal… [Read more]

Beautiful video celebrates the magic of flying

Beautiful video celebrates the magic of flying

Jalopnik’s Travis Okulski: "Like Louis CK says, you’re sitting on a chair in the sky. You should be freaking out the whole time." This video makes flying look like magicks indeed. Now think about this: Only a few centuries ago you could have been burned to death just for claiming that people can fly in metal machines.
