‘Walking’ Bamboo Shark In Eastern Indonesia (VIDEO)

A new species of shark that “walks” along the seabed using its fins as tiny legs has been discovered in eastern Indonesia, an environmental group said Friday.

The brown and white bamboo shark pushes itself along the ocean floor as it forages for small fish and crustaceans at night, said Conservation International, whose scientists were involved in its discovery.

The shark, which grows to a maximum length of just 80 centimetres (30 inches) and is harmless to humans, was discovered off Halmahera, one of the Maluku Islands that lie west of New Guinea.

Bamboo sharks, also known as longtail carpet sharks, are relatively small compared to their larger cousins, with the largest adult reaching only about 120 centimetres (47 inches) in length.

They have unusually long tails that are bigger than the rest of their bodies and are found in tropical waters around Indonesia, Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Conservation International said the discovery of the shark, which was first disclosed in the International Journal of Ichthyology, “should help draw diver interest to this mega-diverse but largely undiscovered region”.

Ketut Sarjana Putra, Indonesia country director for the group, said the Hemiscyllium halmahera shark could “serve as an excellent ambassador to call public attention to the fact that most sharks are harmless to humans and are worthy of our conservation attention”.

Conservation International, whose scientists discovered the shark along with colleagues from the Western Australian Museum, added it came at a time when Indonesia was increasing its efforts to protect shark and ray species.

RoboTech SuperCar: Autonomous Cars Shrink Down to Size

Have you ever wanted ride shotgun in a robotic car as it drives around your neighborhood? Sure, autonomous cars are still very expensive, but how about miniature version? I bet you hadn’t though of that, but a couple of engineers came up with this scaled-down version of Google’s driverless car.

robotech supercar rc car remote drone

The RoboTech SuperCar is a toy car kit, powered by an Arduino controller. It has RGB LED headlights and tail lights, an ultrasonic sensor, and a 24-pin RC bus that can interface with its microcontroller. The car can operate in several modes, including full RC, computer-assisted RC, or fully-autonomous driving.

The benefit is that it’s low cost compared to a full-size autonomous car, and I’m sure that you can have your own robotic invasion fleet ready soon. It’s definitely something quite ingenious to have around if you want to spy on your neighbors.

The Easiest Way to Upgrade Your Gin and Tonic

The Easiest Way to Upgrade Your Gin and Tonic

As the name suggests, there are really only two components to a gin and tonic (unless you count the lime), which means only two ways to screw it up. It’s easy enough to avoid a bad gin. Bad tonic water, though, is the rule, not the exception. Look at a label and you’ll see cheap high-fructose corn syrup is the first ingredient in almost all of them. There’s a better way.

Instants is a slick iOS photo organizer, but do you need it?

Instants organizes your photo library in, well, an instant. But it could use a few improvements.

(Credit: Screenshot by Rick Broida/CNET)

Not everyone likes the look of Apple’s upcoming iOS 7 release, but there’s one feature I suspect every user will welcome: better photo management.

That will come courtesy of an updated Photos app, which will automatically group snapshots based on time and place and provide better tools for sifting through your collections.

But even with iOS 7 just around the corner (the fifth and probably final beta has been in developers’ hands since early August), third-party developers are still working to solve the iOS photo problem on their own. The latest effort: Nuthinking’s Instants, which automatically groups snapshots based on time and location, but also adds features like favorites, tags, and color-coding to the mix.

Right from the get-go, Instants taps your Camera Roll and divides all your photos by month taken. By default, you see all the photos from the c… [Read more]

Awareness For Missing Persons: Have You Seen Them?

Since its inception in 2011, HuffPost Crime has made it a priority to help raise awareness of missing person cases in the United States. Numerous cases are detailed within the Crime section each week.

While we would like to cover every missing case, it is an impossible task, given the number of reports filed daily. That said, we have assembled 10 recent cases we were unable to get to this week.

Table Talk: Solar Panels At The White House

This week’s Family Dinner Table Talk, from HuffPost and The Family Dinner book:

The White House is getting greener: the installation of solar panels on the First Family’s residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue began last week. Solar panels use light from the sun to make electricity.

President Carter actually installed solar panels in the White House long before President Obama did, but President Reagan later had them removed. President George W. Bush also had a small solar heating system installed.
