Google Acquired Android Smartwatch Maker WIMM Labs [Report]

Nowadays, if you’re not making a smartwatch or at least rumored to be making one, then you’re not on the minds of many people both covering the tech industry and readers. Google has been rumored to have been building a smartwatch of their own since earlier this year, and today, rumors are spreading that indiciate the company silently acquired WIMM Labs last summer, which just so happens to be a smartwatch manufacturer.     Nidal Hasan, Convicted Fort Hood Shooter, Arrives At Death Row

    FORT HOOD, Texas — Fort Hood officials say the Army psychiatrist sentenced to death for the 2009 shooting rampage has arrived at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.

    Officials released a statement Friday saying Maj. Nidal Hasan had arrived at the prison’s death row.

    Latino Growth In NYPD Soars

    The number of Latinos in the New York Police Department has jumped dramatically, El Diario/La Prensa reports.

    Just over a quarter of New York City’s 34,500-strong police force is Latino today, according to the Spanish-language daily — a major jump from 1993, when only 14 percent of the city’s cops were Hispanic. NYPD held two ceremonies on Thursday, where dozens of Latinos joined the force and some rose in their ranks, the Spanish-language daily reports.

    “This is something very meaningful for me and my family,” Reymundo Mundo, who rose to the rank of captain Thursday, told the paper. “I’d like to be an example so that other Hispanics keep following their dreams and know that they can reach high positions.”

    Alabama Residents Panic After Radio Station’s Joke Alien Invasion

    When it comes to media, the line between truth and fiction is sometimes hazier than the Milky Way. Just ask Star 94.9, the Alabama radio station that aired a mock warning of an extra-terrestrial invasion on Aug. 27 and subsequently sent the town of Tuscumbia into a spiral of panic about an impending bomb attack.

    It was all a misunderstanding, or perhaps an initial miscalculation by the local Schols Radio Group’s station, according to the Times Daily. The broadcast’s joke about aliens taking over the station was only meant to publicize a programming change.

    But Star 94.9 got more of a promotional boost than they had bargained for when residents took the aliens’ threats seriously. Apparently, the broadcast, which included an alien reading Goodnight Moon, spiraled into an elaborate rumor of a bomb threat at a local school.     Since it’s been nearly a year since Oregon Scientific’s MEEP! kiddy tablet arrived on the scene, it makes sense that we’re due for a refresh. We did see a listing for the MEEP! X2 pop up earlier this month, but the device’s arrival at the FCC is the first concrete sign that the slate will arrive stateside. The documents reveal that the unit packs a microSD slot, HDMI-out, Bluetooth 3.0 and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, while French site Maginea claims that it will feature a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex A9 CPU, a 7-inch 800 x 480 display, 1 GB RAM and 4GB of built-in storage.
