The Best Seafood Raw Bars In L.A.: LAist

Water Grill Santa Monica
The Water Grill in Downtown L.A. has long been a staple in the seafood scene, but their new Santa Monica outpost is just so much more SoCal. The restaurant sits on Ocean Boulevard, and is one of the best places to watch the sunset over the Pacific while slurping down oysters, live uni, clams, and cold lobster tail. The seafood towers don’t come cheap, starting at $39 for two, but they’re quite a sight. Sit at the raw bar and order a glass of crisp New Zealand sauvignon blanc and chow down on cold seafood. Save room for their outrageous croissant bread pudding with caramel sauce and you’ll forget all about your cronut envy.

Kaist Armadillo-T Foldable Electric Vehicle: Open to Drive

As cities are plagued with more and more traffic congestion, it will become harder to drive as well as park your typical car. The Armadillo-T will help alleviate the problem. The electric-powered vehicle was developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and it has some unusual features.
armadillot
It was designed to reduce the amount of space used when a car is parked and not in use. This way you can fit more cars in an area or just claim more of your garage for other things. It uses a 13.6 kWh battery and can travel up to 37 miles per hour with about a 60 mile range per charge.

In order to have it fold just right, they ditched the concept traditional rear view mirrors and instead installed surround-view cameras. When closed its size goes down to just 1.65 meters-long. The rear end slides forward, folding up vertically. It can also rotate 360 degrees when folded, so that it can be moved about. Pretty awesome idea.

This Week On The TechCrunch Gadgets Podcast: Ubuntu, Omate, Digitizer And A Gold iPhone?

MMky5DW

The Ubuntu Edge may have been the most successful crowdfunding campaign in history, but that doesn’t mean it made its goal. Meanwhile, yet another smartwatch joined the fray this week, coaxing John’s money out of his wallet by being just a tad “smarter” than the rest. Makerbot released a scanner this week called the Digitizer, which lets you scan objects to then print them, but we’re not sure we’re down with the high price tag. And last, but certainly not least, we all pretty much agree that a gold iPhone will make its way into the world come September 10.

We discuss all this and more on the latest episode of the TC Gadgets podcast, featuring John Biggs, Matt Burns, Jordan Crook, Darrell Etherington, Natasha Lomas and Romain Dillet.

Enjoy!

Growing Up Geek: Mat Smith

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, a feature where we take a look back at our youth, and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. Today, we have our very own Japan Editor, Mat Smith!

Growing Up Geek Mat Smith

I didn’t want to be an Engadget editor. I wanted to be an astronaut. Yes, there are (admittedly few) British astronauts, thank you. Unfortunately, I was completely put off from learning the deeper secrets of science and maths during those lessons at my local leafy comprehensive school. Do I regret not following through on the science stuff? Possibly, but working here has plenty of different perks — and when Virgin Galactic starts offering space for willing journalists, I’ll be one of the first in line.

While I dreamed of space, the school grind (tests, homework) came pretty easily to me, although I was never going to make the local soccer football team. I was a hyperactive, scrawny kid and wearing astonishingly thick glasses since childhood had formed a nervous disposition to never head the ball — plus a general lack of talent for the sport. So in school, it was back to the books or the sluggish crawl of Yahoo on the library’s shaky internet connection. Fortunately, I was already pretty familiar with computers before I even touched one in school. My parents were forward-thinking enough to buy an Atari ST, our family’s first computer and one that barreled into a series of Commodores and yet more Atari systems.
