A new set of proposed remedies suggested by the DoJ in the Apple ebook price-fixing case has tempered some of the issues the Cupertino firm complained about, but the agency maintains Apple should face tough penalties for continuing to deny any wrongdoing. The second batch of suggestions, submitted by the US Department of Justice today, […]
WASHINGTON — Democracy for America, the progressive political advocacy group formed by Howard Dean in the aftermath of his 2004 presidential campaign, laid off at least six staffers Friday, according to a source close to the organization.
Staffers were notified this morning that they were being terminated due to “budgetary and financial issues,” according to the source. DFA would not confirm the number of staffers whose jobs were eliminated, but acknowledged that the organization had let some people go.
The Vermont-based organization, chaired by Howard Dean’s brother Jim Dean, claims to have one million members nationwide. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, it raised $8.4 million in the 2012 electoral cycle and spent $7.9 million. Thus far in the 2014 cycle, it has raised $1.4 million and spent $2.1 million.

If you don’t eat dinner, you’re not getting a treat. It sounds simple enough, but a young child’s inability to follow that logic at the outset often leads to reactions similar to the five stages of grief. Only, as this little man illustrates, the final emotion is not quite acceptance.
Anger. Disbelief. Regret.

Best Buy didn’t deny that it plans to sell Google’s much-anticipated computerized eyewear, Google Glass, after a famed tech blogger reported a rumored partnership earlier this week.
But the big-box store also didn’t confirm the scuttlebutt.
“At this point, we do not have plans to announce more collaborations,” Jon Sandler, a spokesman for Best Buy, said in a statement to The Huffington Post. “However, as our CEO Hubert Joly said during earnings this week, if a partnership makes sense for our customers, the vendor and Best Buy, we would be open to considering expansion.”

Lions and tigers and NBC, oh my!
According to Deadline, NBC has purchased the “Wizard Of Oz”-themed drama “Emerald City,” which will be written and executive produced by Matt Arnold. Deadline describes “Emerald City” as a “dark reimagining of the classic tale of ‘Oz’ in the vein of ‘Game Of Thrones’, drawing upon stories from [L. Frank] Baum’s original 14 books.”
It’s been nearly 75 years since Baum’s classic tale made its way to the big screen with Judy Garland as Dorothy in “The Wizard Of Oz,” but the story itself is enjoying a resurgence in pop-culture popularity.
And now presenting Gavin DeGraw — 35,000 feet in the air.
That’s the news a group of unsuspecting airplane passengers received on Wednesday when the singer performed a surprise song in conjunction with Southwest Airlines and Live in the Vineyard’s “Live at 35” series. DeGraw joins Mat Kearney, Kris Allen and other crooners as some of the series’ performers.
DeGraw performed his new single “Best I Ever Had,” the first release from an album that’s due this fall. Here’s a peek at the singer doing his thing up in the air.

If resolution is as important as some say it is, then this should be no contest. On one side, we’ve got a 50-inch Ultra HD 4K LED LCD. On the other side, we’ve got a 720p plasma. A $500 50-inch plasma.
Head-to-head, with a variety of content and objective measurements, how do they compare?
The results may surprise you.
These TVs are perhaps more similar than they first appear. The Samsung PN51F4500 plasma is the cheapest of its kind: a bare-bones, 1,024×768-pixel “720p” entry-level model. The Seiki SE50UY04 LCD is also one of the cheapest of its kind: a bare-bones, 3,840×2,160-pixel “4K” entry-level model. LCDs are typically more expensive than like-size plasmas, and 4K TVs even more so.
I placed these two TVs side by side, and fed them a variety of signals, through a Monoprice HDMI splitter. I sat at different distances. Both TVs were calibrated, or at least as much as they could be.
Which would you rather watch? On the left, the $500, 720p, Samsung PN51F4500. On the right, the $1,200, 2160p, Seiki SE50UY04. These images were not adjusted for contrast (only cropped/resized).

Verizon Max promo plan reportedly offers 6GB of data to Edge members for $30
Posted in: Today's ChiliVerizon clearly wants us to stop using unlimited data, but even its Edge upgrade program isn’t a strong argument for embracing capped plans. The company may soon have a better lure, however: Droid-Life claims to have details of an upcoming, limited-time Verizon Max promo plan that would offer relatively large data buckets to Edge users. Individual subscribers would pay just $30 a month for 6GB of data, or $50 for 8GB with hotspot support. They wouldn’t get to share service between devices, however. Verizon has declined to comment on the apparent leak, but we may hear more about Max in the near future when it’s reportedly launching on August 25th. We’re not convinced that the offer is worthwhile for every unlimited-loving refusenik, but it could soften the blow for those who just can’t resist frequent device upgrades.
