What Guns Look Like Point Blank

What Guns Look Like Point Blank

This is what it looks like when a gun is pointing at you. It’s a terrifying view that I hope nobody ever has to see. With photographs captured by Peter Andrew, Simon Duffy and Derek Blais, the ongoing photo series Point Blank shows what different types of guns—Glocks, Desert Eagles, Uzis, etc.—look like up close. It’s an interesting angle because some look like harmless flashlights while others leave no doubt about its killing ability.

Virgin Mobile Sells ZTE Reef, A Waterproof Smartphone

Virgin Mobile Sells ZTE Reef, A Waterproof SmartphoneWaterproof phones used to be lumped under the category of rugged handsets in the past, and them rugged handsets tend to come in a bulky form factor without much thought put in to its aesthetics. Perhaps it was an engineering limitation that was the main cause of that, but we do know that in this day and age, waterproof smartphones with some pretty decent build quality such as the Sony Xperia Z are slim enough to pass off as an ordinary high end smartphone. Virgin Mobile has finally offered their first waterproof smartphone which comes in the form of the aptly named ZTE Reef. The ZTE Reef is IPX7-certified, which allows it to “swim” underwater for up to half an hour in 1 meter of water.

Virgin Mobile continues to maintain its affordable demeanor, where it will retail for $149.99 a pop sans contract. The ZTE Reef will be powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, carries a 4” display with 800 x 480 resolution, a 1MP front-facing camera, a 5MP rear camera with HD video recording, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Virgin Mobile Feed, Virgin Mobile ID Packs, a single-core 1GHz processor and a microSD memory card slot. A 1,650mAh battery rounds off the list of specifications, where you get a purported talk time of 9 hours.

Amazon said to have tested technology for its own wireless network

Amazon may not be happy with just piggybacking on other wireless carrier’s signals for Whispernet-style offerings, as Bloomberg has heard it’s trying out technology that would let it create its own wireless network. The technology used in the tests is from Globalstar, which is seeking to convert its spectrum — intended for use by satellite-connected devices like the Global Phone pictured above — for strictly ground-based use. The report points out a letter from Globalstar technical adviser Jarvinian to the FCC indicating it was helping a “major technology company” assess the performance benefits available earlier this year. The usual people with knowledge of the situation have filled in the blanks, however whether the tests are continuing or if Amazon will ever make real use of it is unknown. If things do move forward Amazon would hardly be alone in its efforts with Dish Network’s similar push to use spectrum it owns for LTE. If Globalstar really can do LTE / public WiFi better we’re ready to hear about it, although hopefully it will connect to more hardware than just some future Kindle Fire 4.

HP Omni 10 Hits The FCC

HP Omni 10 Hits The FCCIt seems as though HP has not given up on the tablet scene just yet, although they have come up with their fair share of hybrid models in the past, even before the ill fated webOS-powered model that was discontinued shortly after it was revealed to the masses. Well, this time around, there seems to be a new 10” tablet that has arrived at the FCC for further inspection (and subsequent approval, of course), and this particular device has been named the HP Omni 10. The documents that were filed with the FCC included a drawing of the back of a device, carrying the HP logo that is located right smack in the center, while sporting the Omni 10 name just below it, and “HP Slate” printed on the label.

Other “confirmed” hardware specifications based on the FCC filing include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a camera of unknown megapixel count located at the back of it, a headset jack, and volume buttons. Of course, it remains to be seen whether this is an Android-powered tablet or a machine which runs on the Windows platform, or totally something else. Which side do you think the HP Omni 10 is batting on, and is it the side you are rooting for?

Touchless Control App Now On Google Play Store

Touchless Control App Now On Google Play StoreWhen it comes to rolling out smartphones, very little differentiates between one and the other, especially when we are talking about high end models. Sure, there will always be one particular model that spearheads the list of breaking features for the first time such as a Full HD display, but wait for a while and see how the other rivals will roll out devices of a similar nature. Motorola, however, intends to be different by offering smartphones which support touchless controls, and those will include support for always-on voice controls.

Imaging training your handset just like you would a pooch – and it will only respond to your requests when you start off with the magic abracadabra phrase of “OK, Google Now.” Pretty cool, except that you aren’t controlling a mammoth starship, but rather, a smartphone. Having said that, the Touchless Control app can now be downloaded from the Google Play Store, although you will still need one of the following handsets from Motorola – Moto X, Droid Ultra, Droid Mini, and Droid Maxx, to run this Touchless Control app.

For those of you who do not own any of the Motorola handsets listed above, fret not, there is always an alternative hanging around, even if it is not the best – you could give a third-party app like Open Mic+ a go that ensures the microphone on your device remains active at all times, at your beck and call while you kick off Google Now with a key phrase.

Watch a Hot Ball of Nickel Scorch Little Gummy Bears to Goop

When you drop a burning ball of nickel onto the world’s largest gummy bear, the synthetic gummy bear surprisingly wins. There’s just too much gummy! But if you put that same burning ball of nickel onto normal sized gummy bears? No contest. Those little tasty fellers get destroyed and smoked and scorched and juiced and pulpified and oozed and gooped to hell. It’s like some sort of alien fire.
