Hubble Captured a Huge, Light-Year-Long Flaming Space Monster

This beautifully bright, light-year-long heap of gas and dust particles was caught by the Hubble telescope hurtling through space on its way to becoming a star some 4,500-odd light years away. And this little cosmic caterpillar-that-could is all the more incredible when you know what it’s fighting against.

Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 Review

Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 Review

Samsung didn’t just release a 10.1-inch version of its Galaxy Tab 3 as they released their latest tablet in an 8.0 and 7.0 version. Along with the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 3 we were lent for our review, Samsung also supplied us with the 8-inch version. Both tablets have many similarities, but ultimately, we wanted to treat both products as their own version considering how many people would be looking at either Galaxy Tab 3 to potentially purchase.

One of the most obvious differences between the 10.1-inch and 8.0-inch variants are its size. Aside from that, the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3 features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, is available with either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, a 5MP rear-facing camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera and a 4,450mAh battery. Some of the specs are an improvement over the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, while others are slightly under, but for the most part, both the 10.1-inch and 8-inch variants are very similar.

Will the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3 perform better than the ho-hum 10.1-inch version? There’s only one way to find out, and that’s by continuing on with our review. (more…)

Nine Inch Nails puts Kinect, various other gadgets to use on festival tour

Nine Inch Nails puts Kinect, various other gadgets to use on festival tour

It’s no secret that Nine Inch Nails’ frontman Trent Reznor likes to do things a bit differently. He and long-time art director Rob Sheridan have assembled a crew to make the group’s festival dates this year as visually stunning as the audio promises to be. Along with a slew of other high-tech gadgetry, there’s a Kinect that handles motion tracking with captured movements projected onto a handful of mobile video screens. Alongside thermal and regular ol’ video cameras, live video content is piped on-stage during specific parts of the set — with a hand from the folks at Moment Factory, a multimedia environment studio. Reznor also notes that much of the system is “a bunch of homemade software and hardware effects that they’ve tied together” with the goal of creating a film-like quality to an hour and a half performance. For a 13-minute, behind the scenes look at the prep work, head on past the break.

Nokia’s newest handset has a Gorilla Glass screen, an eye-popping 38-day battery life, and is constructed of sturdy aluminum. The catch? It runs a 14-year-old operating system, and is about as dumb as a phone can get these days.

How Ronald E. McNair Became The Second African American To Go To Space (VIDEO)

Today — August 30 — marks the 30th anniversary of the day that Guion S. Blueford became the first African American to go to space. To honor this milestone, we thought we’d show you a video we love. It tells the story of the second African American to enter space — physicist Ronald E. McNair.

McNair was a crew member on the 1984 NASA Challenger STS-41-B mission — one that ended in tragedy when the shuttle exploded 73 seconds after takeoff on January 28, 1986. McNair and the rest of the crew were killed.

But in the StoryCorps animation above, titled ‘Eyes On The Stars,’ McNair’s brother, Carl, honors his late brother by narrating his inspiring and adorable story. He explains just how “a colored boy from South Carolina” became an explorer of the universe.

Texas Planned Parenthood Gets $1 Million Donation From Perot Foundation

The Perot Foundation of Dallas, founded by billionaire and former presidential candidate Ross Perot, announced Thursday that it is donating $1 million to Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas to help provide health care and education services.

“For nearly 100 years Planned Parenthood has helped to educate men and women regarding family planning and general family health,” said Margot Perot in a written statement. “Our family has supported this nonprofit for many years because we are impressed with the work they do — providing birth control; scientifically based education; breast health exams; and basic, life-saving healthcare for women who cannot afford services otherwise.”

The $1 million is undesignated, according to a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman, so the money can be used for the general mission of the organization.
