Google’s blue moonlit doodle celebrates Debussy

Harmony.

(Credit: Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

In a world of despair, betrayal, and terrible covers of famous songs, you need soothing.

Often, there’s no one there to do it. Sometimes, though, Google has this sweet habit of trying to do it for you.

So August 22 will be a day when, whatever bad comes to pass, you can take a moonlit stroll down a riverside, with Achille-Claude Debussy’s “Clair De Lune” as your background music.

Debussy was born 151 years ago Thursday. And, as is Google’s desire sometimes, its doodlers don’t care which birthday it is. They just believe it’s time to honor that person with a doodle.

NYC Mayoral Candidate Compares Undocumented Immigrants To Modern-Day Slaves

A little known Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City likened the plight of undocumented immigrants to slaves during a debate Wednesday night.

“I want to be remembered as a mayor who fought for all the inhabitants of New York City, especially for those who are basically enslaved in this modern kind of slavery,” said Rev. Erick Salgado, a Brooklyn pastor, when asked what kind of legacy he’d leave behind as mayor.

“I believe that slavery is not abolished,” he added. “Slavery has been transferred to my people.”

This Hashtag Limiting Instagram Update Should Totally Be Real

Is Instagram over yet? Or our distant relatives just finding out about filters? Wherever the picture sharing app currently stands on the sliding scale of not owning a TV to being an Oprah audience member, it’s obvious to anyone who has used Instagram that people like hashtags, people like food pictures (and sunset pictures and sky pictures), people like bragging, people like quotes and people like selfies. That’s really all people like. That’s why Instagram should totally update its app to include all these hilarious features like limiting hashtags to 600 and adding an Inspirational Quote Generator.

FIU Frat Pi Kappa Alpha Suspended For Being Dumb Enough To Sell Drugs On Facebook

Florida International University suspended the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity this week after Facebook posts by fraternity members came to light about selling and using drugs, hazing and making sexist statements about women.

The Miami-based public university became aware of the postings recently, the Miami Herald reports, and the administration and police are investigating. The FIU Pike Facebook page has since been deleted.

“The university is taking this information very seriously because it suggests possible Student Code of Conduct violations,” FIU said in a statement. “The university took prompt action and placed the fraternity on interim suspension pending the outcome of investigations by appropriate university departments, including the police. As a result, the fraternity has been instructed to cease all meetings and events.”

OpenGlass gives Google Glass real-time augmented reality (video)

Image

To some, Google Glass is nothing more than a notification machine, but there are others who see Glass as an AR headset waiting to happen. OpenGlass is among those looking to give Glass augmented reality powers, and it’s figured out how to implement simple AR in real-time. The trick was accomplished by sampling the imagery pulled in by the headset’s camera and extracting the portion of that feed that corresponds to the size of Glass’s display. That feed is then sent to an OpenGlass server that overlays digital annotations provided by another users onto the video feed to augment the wearer’s reality.

There’s a video after the break demoing the AR functionality, but it’s rudimentary and laggy in its implementation. Essentially, the system serves as a telestrator that superimposes scribbles into your field of view. It’s a good proof-of-concept to show that Glass can do real-time AR, but there’s a lot of work to be done before Glass can become a fully-fledged augmented (or mediated) reality headset.

How Pacific Rim Should Have Ended

We absolutely loved Pacific Rim. It was everything a great summer action movie should be. And plus, when it’s Guillermo del Toro making giant robots fight giant monsters, what can go wrong? Well, according to the well wrinkled critical brain of HISHE, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi’s characters in the movie would totally re-think the Jaeger defensive strategy. But hey, we noticed the story’s various jumps in logic too. We still loved it just the same. [HISHE]
