HP Q3 2013 droops; Whitman praises ability to predict sliding finances

HP saw Q3 2013 revenue fall 8-percent year on year, mustering $27.2bn in a disappointing quarter in which the most positive thing CEO Meg Whitman could say is that the company delivered exactly the shrinking finances it had previously predicted. “We once again achieved the financial performance we said we would” Whitman said today, as […]

Chips Bluetooth helmet speakers offer audio and smartphone connectivity on the slope

Music is befitting for a variety of activities, not the least of which are outdoor sports that require a helmet. While earbuds can work in such a situation, they’re not entirely ideal, and that is where Outdoor Technology’s new Chips Bluetooth headphones come in. Unlike traditional headphones, the Chips setup features two speakers connected by […]

ReadyCase hands-on: A crowd-funded project comes to life

The ReadyCase comes with a removable flash drive that doubles as a kickstand.

(Credit: ReadyCase)

Way back in October 2012, I told you about the ReadyCase, an Indiegogo project for an iPhone case with seven handy built-in tools.

Because I was in the market for a new case for my 4S, I decided to fund it, even though it meant waiting until production began in February.

I ended up waiting quite a bit longer; various delays pushed the shipping date back and back, resulting in no small number of extremely angry backers (as evidenced by the comments on the project page). But a few days ago, my ReadyCase finally arrived. Was it worth the wait?

It’s kind of a hot mess. The promise of the ReadyCase remains as tantalizing as ever: a built-in flash drive that doubles as a kickstand, a removable multitool, a metal ring for attaching various magnetic camera lenses, and a clip for holding your headphone cord. All this in a black plastic case that adds just 3mm of thickness to your iPhone 4/4S or iPhone 5.

I’ll admit it took me a while to figure out the various components, like how the two removable pieces clip in and out, which way the flash-drive/kickstand gets inserted into its slots, and how the two incl… [Read more]

An exec at LG gave a bunch of details today about the company’s plans for the rest of the year and much of 2014, revealing a tablet is in the works and due to be released this year. A smartwatch, that may include previously teased flexible display tech that may act as a direct competitor […]

Kickstarter bans genetically engineered rewards

(Credit: Glowing Plant)

If you plan to fund the creation of a genetic hybrid on Kickstarter, you can no longer offer it to backers as a reward. The Web site has added a new term to its guidelines stating that “projects cannot offer genetically modified organisms as a reward.”

The new rule came into effect after the successful funding of Glowing Plants, a project to modify Arabidopsis and rose plants with firefly and luminescent bacteria DNA so they would glow in the dark, providing a natural light source. The project, created by trained biologists, offered the seeds of the plant, if successfully created, for $40. The project raked in $484,013 — from a goal of $65,000 — from 8,433 backers.

But the project spurred debate in the scientific community. GMO is supposed to be tightly controlled, for very good reason. When you release a genetically modified plant into the environment, there is no way of knowing what effects it may have on that environment. Case in point: thanks to transgenes, a type of weed in China has benefited from a genetic pesticide resistance built into other plants and become more hardy as a result.

And… [Read more]

PSA: Verizon’s Motorola Droid Mini begins shipping tomorrow, not August 29th

Image

Product delays are often talked about (and judged) around the interwebs, and thus it’s only fair to give a company credit when it plans to deliver something ahead of schedule. As such, those who pre-ordered a Motorola Droid Mini for Verizon will be happy to find out that the 4.3-inch handset will begin shipping tomorrow, August 22nd, instead of August 29th as was originally planned. PhoneArena was the first to spot this tidbit earlier on the network’s website, however a Verizon representative has since confirmed to us that the change in dates is indeed true. It’s not clear whether the Kevlar-wrapped Droid Mini’s also going to be on sale at Verizon’s brick-and-mortar stores, but we’ll be updating this story if we hear anything.

Watch a Prankster ‘Accidentally’ Break His iMac in Front of People

You know that soul dropping feeling you get when you see someone drop their phone? It’s the sound that’s the most horrifying thing. A crisp crack that’s not unlike adding ice to your soda. Painful. There goes hundreds of dollars! Now imagine that same feeling multiplied as you watch in horror as some stranger drops his iMac box and you hear the shrieking shatter. That would be awful. That would also make for a HILARIOUS prank.

Archos 101 XS 2 Spotted At The FCC

Archos 101 XS 2 Spotted At The FCCThe last we heard, Archos reportedly has big plans for IFA 2013 and could be unveiling a slew of new products, one of which might have recently been spotted at the FCC under the moniker, Archos 101 XS 2. The device, in case the photo above wasn’t obvious enough, is a tablet and it is expected to be something of a successor to the original Archos 101 XS which we reviewed back in 2012. Unfortunately apart from the FCC filing that ousts the device’s existence, not much is known about the tablet in terms of its hardware, although we are able to get a look at the tablet’s overall design which to be honest isn’t all that exciting.

For those wondering what sort of specs we might be able to expect from the Archos 101 XS 2, the 101 XS featured a cover called the Coverboard that doubled up as a keyboard as well. The original 101 XS also came with a 10.1” 1280×800 display and was powered by a 1.5GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor with 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of onboard storage, a microSD card slot for memory expansion, and a front-facing camera. Hopefully with the 101 XS 2 we will be seeing a huge upgrade over last year’s hardware, so be sure to check back with us during IFA 2013 for the details!

Classic Title Dungeon Keeper To Arrive On iOS And Android This Winter

Classic Title Dungeon Keeper To Arrive On iOS And Android This WinterIf you were already gaming back in the 90’s, chances are you might have played or have heard the game Dungeon Keeper, a PC strategy game made by Bullfrog Productions under Peter Molyneux. The good news is that if you thoroughly enjoyed the game back in the day and wouldn’t mind reliving some of it for nostalgic purposes, you’re in luck as it seems that the game has been announced for mobile devices and will arrive on both iOS and Android this winter, although no specific dates were mentioned. There was also no mention of how much the game could cost, but some are speculating that the game could be free-to-play given EA’s recent releases so far.

For those unfamiliar, Dungeon Keeper places the gamer in the role of the, well, dungeon keeper, and instead of relying on more traditional storylines that place the gamer in the shoes of the hero slaying the demons and monsters, the gamer takes on the role of the monsters and is tasked to prevent the heroes from entering and stealing their treasure. It is a pretty unique take and while games that reverse the roles are somewhat common these days, back then it was a pretty big deal and if you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, you might want to keep an eye out for its release.

Refurbished iPhone 3GS Units Could Be Offered To AT&T GoPhone Customers

Refurbished iPhone 3GS Units Could Be Offered To AT&T GoPhone CustomersThe iPhone 3GS is old by technology standards, especially since it was released back in 2009 making the handset a good four years old. If that is the case why are we still talking about it? Well it seems that if you’ve always wanted an iPhone but the iPhone 4 is still a little out of your price range ($325 unlocked), AT&T’s prepaid arm, GoPhone, could soon start to offer up the iPhone 3GS as an extremely affordable handset. This is according to reports where it is believed that some of AT&T’s stores will be offering refurbished models of the iPhone 3GS to their prepaid GoPhone customers.

The handset is not expected to be advertised or publicized, but supposedly sales staff will offer it as an option to some customers who might not be able to afford their more expensive offerings. Not all AT&T stores will carry the handset, but it is expected that larger urban centers should have it in stock. Given that the phone has been discontinued and the models customers will be getting are refurbished, we guess they can’t really charge too much for it to begin with. Of course there will be limitations in the sense that the phone’s hardware is pretty old and will not be supported by iOS 7, but if an iPhone is what you want, we guess it should do in a pinch.
