Tesla crash tests prove Model S is the safest car on the road

Tesla crash tests prove Model S is the safest car on the road

The Tesla Model S‘ all-electric infrastructure is being credited with a heck of a lot more than top-notch energy efficiency. Because of the design, the vehicle lacks a large gasoline engine block up front, boosting the “crumple zone” and ultimately saving lives during an otherwise deadly crash. As a result, the sedan scored a combined record of 5.4 stars during a recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) test. That figure is higher than the maximum published rating of 5 stars, but Tesla received a more comprehensive report detailing actual results. The Model S also earned high marks with its rear-crash, side-pole-intrusion and rollover tests. Additionally, the lithium-ion battery did not catch fire at any time, and it never has in a Roadster or Model S — the same can’t be said for certain competitors.

High Speed In-Flight Internet Possible By Next Year

High Speed In Flight Internet Possible By Next YearIn-flight Internet has been around for some years already, but not all flights still offer this particular service. Not only that, you could more or less say that the in-flight Wi-Fi might not be fast enough to stream video content from sites including Netflix and the BBC’s iPlayer, but all of that might probably change by the time 2014 rolls around. According to communications regulator Ofcom, they are proposing to license a new satellite system for aircraft – as well as ships and trains, of course. Earth Stations on Mobile Platforms (ESOMPs) is capable of delivering connections up to 10 times faster compared to what one is can experience at the moment.

Britain’s airlines have yet to indicate whether they would sign up for this particular technology or not, although British Airways’ in-flight entertainment and technology manager, Richard D’Cruze, claimed that the airline was “closely monitoring developments in the connectivity market in both the satellite and direct air-to-ground technology areas”. Ofcom did mention that it has been working alongside its European counterparts for the past couple of years, where they will include France, Germany and Luxembourg, who happen to be in the process of piecing together their own regulations. I am quite sure that everyone would not mind having faster Internet many miles up in the air, no?

Interactive music video stars your own Facebook profile

The Facehawk is composed of your Facebook information.

“Big Data” is a business buzz phrase used to describe mass amounts of information. It’s also an electronic-music duo that enjoys playing with the crossover between music and technology. The band’s latest single, “Dangerous,” comes with an interactive music video that customizes itself based on your Facebook profile.

First, you have to allow access to your profile by clicking the big “connect with Facebook to play video” button on the Facehawk site and agreeing to let it gather your data. It won’t post to your wall without permission.

The video kicks off by making it look like Big Data has taken over your Facebook page and updated your status for you. That screen breaks apart until status updates and photos are flying all over the place, slowly assembling themselves back together into a 3D hawk shape. This is your very own personalized “facehawk.”

The video also takes you on a stroll through long-forgotten Facebook status updates and photos, both your own and those from friends. At the end, you can zoom in on and rotate your facehawk.

Barnes & Noble has backtracked on plans to axe internal development of new NOOK tablets, promising continued R&D into both black & white and color models, with at least one new NOOK for the holiday 2013 season. Sony PlayStation Gamescom 2013 liveblog!

While Microsoft continues to trip over itself in the lead up to Xbox One, Sony’s PlayStation 4 message is staying on target and sailing straight into gamers’ good graces. And, after an undisputed win at E3 this year, there’s little doubt Gamescom 2013 will slow Sony’s roll, instead giving the company yet another opportunity to increase its already positive mindshare and deliver on next-gen promises (PS Vita Remote Play, anyone?).

So, what can we expect from Sony’s center stage spectacle today? The company will probably dive a bit deeper into the particulars of its indie strategy and, hopefully, announce a hard date on that PS4 holiday release — which is what most of us care about, anyway. Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess. So, hang tight, we’ll be back with the blow-by-blow (and every gloriously awkward corporate potshot) right here at 9AM PST / 12PM EST.

Pixy Brings Machine Vision To Robot World

Pixy Brings Machine Vision To Robot WorldJust what is the Pixy? It happens to be a tiny camera that measures roughly half the size of a business card is capable of detecting objects which you have “trained” it to detect. This particular form of “training” is very different from Jedi training, as it is done thanks to holding the object located in front of Pixy’s lens and pressing a button. Pixy would then try to look for objects that sport similar color signatures via a dedicated dual-core processor which is capable of processing images at 50 frames per second. Pixy will then send its findings that will comprise of the sizes and locations of all detected objects, where that can be accomplished through a variety of interfaces such as UART serial, SPI, I2C, digital or analog I/O.

Pixy is capable of detecting hundreds of objects from seven different color signatures. It is right now a Kickstarter campaign, where it will be able to be yours as long as you contribute a minimum of $59. Pixy happens to be a partnership between Carnegie Mellon University and a small Austin-based company that call themselves Charmed Labs. As Pixy is powered by its own processor, it will not bog down the Arduino’s CPU with processing images, so one should not experience too many performance issues.
