Microsoft Details How They Guard Against Malware On Windows Phone

Microsoft Details How They Guard Against Malware On Windows PhoneAccording to our earlier report, the US government has found in a study of their own that about 80% of malware targets the Android operating system, about 0.7% for iOS, and 0.3% for Windows Mobile. Given that the Windows Phone operating system is not as popular compared to Android, we guess malware creators don’t see a need to target the operating system, yet, but we expect a day will come when those numbers rise. In the meantime to assuage the fear of Windows Phone users, Microsoft has detailed how they will go about preventing malware from arriving on their Windows Phone platform.

For starters they state that the Windows Phone Store is the exclusive distribution platform for Windows Phone apps, meaning that quality is ensured, not to mention that since it is being distributed by Microsoft, there are certain assurances one can take from it. They then state that every app is tested and certified by Microsoft  to help weed out bad apps and malware that is disguised as an app, and lastly they claim that when malware is detected, they will remove it, which is more reactionary rather than preventive, but like they said, no system is perfect.

While having an exclusive app store and a team reviewing and certifying apps does help, you might recall it wasn’t too long ago that researchers managed to slip malware past Apple’s app review team, but once again, no system is perfect but it’s something worth taking note of.

Microsoft Rumored To Purchase A Stake In Foursquare

Microsoft Rumored To Purchase A Stake In FoursquareWith Facebook offering their own “check in” feature, and with Google adding Waze to Google Maps, Microsoft seems to be lagging behind somewhat. However according to a report from Bloomberg, perhaps Microsoft won’t be lagging behind for too long as the Redmond company is reportedly looking to purchase a stake in Foursquare. It does not appear to be a full on acquisition, but it is unknown as to how big of a stake Microsoft is interested in. Naturally neither Microsoft nor Foursquare has commented on the rumor, but word has it that the talks are in a somewhat advanced stage, a deal has yet to be finalized.

While it is unclear as to why Microsoft could be interested in Foursquare, it is speculated that Microsoft could be looking to achieve something similar with Bing Maps that Google did when they acquired Waze, which ultimately allowed Google to rely on crowd-sourcing to add more details and information to Google Maps. However unlike Waze, Foursquare does not appear to be for traffic, but rather for location check-ins, but if it can add more functionality to Bing Maps, why not? Take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Any Bing Maps users out there excited about this potential deal with Foursquare?

‘Desolation of Smaug’ trailer re-created in Lego stop motion

(Credit: Video screenshot by Leslie Katz/CNET)

We think it’s official: a fantasy trailer isn’t a real trailer until it’s had a Lego stop-motion remake.

The trailer for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” launched on June 11, and it wasn’t long before Brotherhood Workshop — a team of stop-motion enthusiasts who hope one day to make feature films — was looking to give it the Lego stop-motion treatment.

In a project that took two months to make, the team re-created, shot by shot, the entire two-minute trailer. It’s not made entirely out of Lego (the water looks suspiciously like CG 1×1 plates, for example), but some of the best animation manages to blend several styles seamlessly.

If you want to watch a comparison between the two trailers, the studio has uploaded a … [Read more]

Plexus Concept Shirt Will Change Based On The Occasion

When it comes to outfits, there’s usually an appropriate outfit for every occasion, such as one worn for sports, one for work, one for formal meetings, and etc. However if you’re the sort of person who’s schedule is packed to the max, constantly changing seems rather inefficient, not to mention it could rack up a pretty expensive laundry bill, so what do you do? Well the Plexus concept could be the answer to your problem. This shirt concept was designed by Vernon Chen and Joanne Lim Jin Xuan where the shirt will be able to morph into an appropriate look based on the occasion.

The designers imagine that shirts of the future will be held together via pixelated nano-particles and will be able to adapt to the wearer’s surroundings. In the video above, the shirt morphs from a casual running shirt to a coat/shirt/tie look. Granted the final result is hardly the most appropriate for formal business meetings, it is still a pretty awesome concept nonetheless. Of course it is safe to say that this shirt does not exist yet, but what do you guys think? Perhaps switching from casual to formal isn’t the best idea, but if you’re looking to switch up design or colors during the day, the Plexus shirt concept might do the job.

Pioneer DDJ-WeGO2 Is For The DJ On A Budget

If you have plans of becoming a DJ but don’t have money to afford professional equipment, or if you simply need some DJ tools to do some mixes at home, Pioneer has announced the DDJ-WeGO2 DJ console that will be the successor of the DDJ-WeGO. Given Pioneer’s success in the DJ industry, especially with its higher-end offerings, we expect that the WeGO2 will have some standards as well. BBM For iOS And Android Landing Page Spotted Before Being Taken Down

BBM For iOS And Android Landing Page Spotted Before Being Taken DownGiven that iOS and Android both have a plethora of messenger platforms to choose from, we’re not sure if the addition of BBM will help BlackBerry at all, but we guess sometimes variety is not a bad thing. For those who feel the same and are looking forward to BBM for iOS and Android, you’ve probably heard that the app will be arriving soon, but how soon? Well it seems that for a brief moment, the landing page of BBM for iOS and Android had gone live on BlackBerry’s website. Unfortunately the page has since been pulled, but not before the folks at CrackBerry managed to grab a screenshot of it which you can see pictured above.

CrackBerry has also noted that while BBM will arrive on iOS, the page clearly notes the iPhone, meaning that BBM for the iPad might not be an option, at least for the time-being. Still no word on when BBM for iOS and Android will be launch, but with Samsung Ghana advertising the app and with the landing page going live (briefly), perhaps a launch in the very near future can be anticipated. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more info, so check back with us at a later date to see if there are any updates to be had!

Aereo CEO reveals an Android app is launching this September

Aereo CEO reveals an Android app is launching this September

In more than one way, Aereo keeps growing and growing, and it looks as if it’s getting ready to grow a little more. According to the International Business Times, Aereo CEO, Chet Kanojia, has confirmed to the publication that an official Android app for the TV streaming service is on its way. More specifically, Aereo’s chief says the application will be launching in the month of September, which would be right around the same time as the unconventional cable provider prepares to debut in Chicago. No word on when exactly we can expect the Aereo app to arrive on the Play store, but given how August only has about two full days left in it, it’s safe to say it’ll be sooner rather than later. In the meantime, there’s always the option to watch on your computer — or, hey, maybe a dear friend would be kind enough to let you borrow an iOS device.

Giphy Allows You To Upload Animated GIFs To Facebook

Giphy Allows You To Upload Animated GIFs To Facebook

While Facebook might have allowed images to be embedded in the comments section, what it does not support is animated GIFs which can be typically found on websites such as 9gag or forums. Well if you were hoping to be able to embed animated GIFs into Facebook you now can through a workaround courtesy of Giphy
. Giphy is basically a search engine for GIFs and what they have done is that they have created a code that allows GIFs to be looped on Facebook.

The act of uploading an animated GIF onto Facebook is equivalent of linking to a video. All you’d have to do is copy and paste the URL to the GIF and you’re done! It will feature a “play” button and your friends will just have to click it if they wish to see the GIF animated. The “downside” is that the URL needs to come from Giphy’s website which means that if Giphy were to go down for whatever reason, you’d be out of luck, at least temporarily.

According to a spokesperson for Facebook when they heard about this, “Facebook does not support animated GIFs.” What this means is that while it works, it is not an officially supported feature meaning that don’t expect Facebook to respond to your queries should something go wrong.

Sony’s Lens Camera Accessory Could Be Known As The “EspressOn” [Rumor]

Sonys Lens Camera Accessory Could Be Known As The EspressOn [Rumor]We know that Sony has a “lens camera” type accessory in the works, which has also been referred to by its model numbers, the QX10 and the QX100, but what will the entire lineup be known as upon its release? After all “lens camera” doesn’t sound too catchy, does it? Well according to the folks at BGR, the accessory is expected to be known as the “EspressOn”, which to be honest does sound a little weird, not to mention “express” would make more sense, but then again perhaps Sony might have their own reasons.

In any case for those who are hearing this for the first time, these lens camera accessories are basically camera lenses with sensors built into them, allowing them to function as a camera while attached to a smartphone via Bluetooth connectivity. The QX10 is expected to be based on the WX-150’s camera and will sport an 18MP CMOS sensor, while the QX100 will be based on the RX100MII with a 20.2MP sensor. Last we heard it was rumored that the QX100 could cost $450. In any case we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information, so check back with us at a later date for more info!
