AT&T Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 Review

As the AT&T iteration of the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 hits the market, there’s a surprisingly accepting atmosphere for devices with displays of all sizes. Back in 2011 when the original Samsung Galaxy Note was introduced, it was considered daring – a device with a 5.3-inch display? That was massive! Now we’ve got the Samsung […]

Twittertape Machine Prints Tweets Instead of Stock Prices

Remember the days when ticker tapes would continuously churn out stock prices? Unless you’re somebody’s great grandparent, probably not. People have gone paperless these days, rendering these machines pretty much useless. Or are they?

While they’re not being used to print stock prices anymore, they are being used to print tweets. At least that’s what British web developer Adam Vaughan is doing with the steampunk-looking contraption that he built from scratch called the Twittertape Machine. The machine has a microcontroller and a thermal printer hidden on its base and connects to a computer via Ethernet. It then checks Adam’s Twitter account every half hour.

Adam explains where he got the inspiration for the Twittertape: “I got the idea that I’d really like to have one on my desk, but of course they’re incredibly rare now and sell for huge amounts of money. Then it struck me that even if I did manage to get one it would just sit there gathering dust, doing nothing. So I had the idea that I would build one of my own, one that actually functioned… I was trying to think about what information it could produce, and of course Twitter is just a perfect fit – short succinct messages just like the stock movements of old.”

This Re-Purposed Mining Cart Hauls Drinks Instead of Coal

Nothing helps fill the silent void at an awkward dinner party like a piece of furniture with an interesting back story. Whether it’s the couch you found inexplicably just abandoned next to a dumpster, a bookshelf that started life as a stolen stack of cinderblocks, or this truly unique mine cart coffee table that spent a past life hauling coal and other materials.

Facebook adds lock screen music controls to Home, animated stickers for all Android users

Facebook’s Android offerings just got a little livelier through a pair of updates. If you’re using Facebook Home, you now have music controls on the lock screen during playback. Everyone using the regular Facebook app, meanwhile, should see animated stickers in messages. Neither upgrade is dramatic, but they’re both enough to justify a quick visit to Google Play.

Galaxy Note 3 Render Pops Up Online

Galaxy Note 3 Render Pops Up Online

Samsung’s new phablet is going to be released next month. The company has already confirmed that we’ll be seeing the Galaxy Note 3 for the first time on September 10th. There have been countless rumors about the device and its specifications, however little is known about its design. Recently we saw the purported front panel of Galaxy Note 3 being compared with that of Galaxy Note 2, minor changes were evident. Now an unofficial render of Galaxy Note 3 has popped up online, it has actually been posted on Spigen’s website. Spigen is a case and accessory manufacturer for mobile devices.

Along with the render, Spigen mentions the launch date of Galaxy Note 3. The unofficial render shows off Galaxy Note 3′s front, but since Samsung hasn’t shown off what the new phablet looks like, we must not assume right now that it will look completely like this. Case manufacturers usually create products either based on rumors or information that they receive about the design of a new device. Still, it remains to be seem just how spot-on this render is, we’ll know for sure once Samsung lifts the wraps on September 4th. It is also going to announce it’s new smartwatch at the very same event.

Thank God Famous Art Doesn’t Have YouTube Comments

There is some fantastic art on YouTube. There are also some hideous comments on YouTube. Probably more of the latter than the former. But hey, at least there aren’t YouTube comments on all art.

Knowingly texting a driver could land you in court

    Whose fault?

    “Hey, I’m in the car.”

For some these words said on the phone — or written in a text — signal that communication isn’t a good thing at that moment.

For others, it’s just another line in the natural flow of needing to know where people are, but carrying on as normal.

Now, lawyers in New Jersey are trying to explore whether calling or texting someone who you know is driving makes you legally liable in the event of an accident.

As WPIX reports, a New Jersey appeals court opened the law to the possibility that it isn’t just the texting driver who might be in trouble.

Attorney Marc Saperstein, an expert in distracted driving cases, told WPIX: “One of the great arguments that my colleague made was to analogize that when you text, as the texter, you are electronically in that car.

It’s an alluring argument. It’s your fault that the driver was distracted, so you are guilty.

Some might say, though, that the sender has no idea if the receiver will actually read the text.

Perhaps an even simpler retort would be: So now we’re going to prosecute anyone sitting in the car who happens to be talking to the driver before an accident? Aren’t they dis… [Read more]

Asimov’s 2014 Predictions Were Shockingly Conservative For 1964

Asimov's 2014 Predictions Were Shockingly Conservative For 1964

In 1964, sci-fi legend Isaac Asimov penned a piece for the New York Times with his predictions for the world of 2014. Looking at the World’s Fair of 50 years hence, Asimov imagined 3D TV, underground cities, and colonies on the moon. Many people online have hailed this as an incredible example of prescient thinking, but what sticks out to me is just how shockingly restrained—unoriginal, even—his predictions were for the time.
