Amazon Faces High-Stakes Challenge In Scaling Mayday On-Demand Support

Mayday Amazon Mayday

What happens when it’s easier to call tech support than to Google your problem? Amazon might discover the costly answer to that question depending on how much the owners of its new Kindle Fire HDX tablets use its Mayday on-demand video customer support feature. And whether they behave themselves.

Mayday is available at the tap of a button in the Kindle HDX’s Quick Settings menu. 24 hours a day, year round, it pops up a little video window on-screen showing a support agent. They can’t see you but can hear you, talk to you, draw on your screen to guide you, and even take control of your screen to help you out.

As Farhad Manjoo notes, Mayday might not be able to solve one of the most common types of tech problems: broken Internet. That won’t stop it from answering plenty of other queries from the old, young, and frequently confused. You can watch videos of Mayday in action here.

If Amazon can scale Mayday it would be amazing. Both in the sense that it would make many people’s lives with technology easier, and it would be a remarkable logistics feat. It could become an industry benchmark for premier service. I’d love to see this succeed.

No Barrier To Berating Support

Today, most companies put lots of support info online, but if you want handholding from a human, you have to work for it.

Look at Apple’s Genius Bars. You have to make an appointment, trek out to a retail store, and show up on time. That erects a barrier to use while giving people an option when they really need assistance.

With phone based customer support, you have to look up the number, wade through phone menus, wait on hold, and then explain what you’re looking at to a support agent that is essentially flying blind.

All this friction sucks. So why does it exist? It’s cost-effective.

Having tons of support people available on-demand straight from your device would be awesome…and could be very expensive for Amazon. Mayday could become a big selling point for the device and save the company from losing money to returns, thereby paying for itself. But it’s a gamble on whether people will bash that button too often.

The question is how much Amazon will have to compromise on its vision. The company has told reporters it wants Mayday to let you get support within 15 seconds at any time, even on a busy Christmas morning, and have no limit on how often you can call for help. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos went to bat for Mayday, telling TechCrunch that it functions similar to the company’s other call centers. He seemed confident Amazon could pull it off. After all, it’s managed quite a few miracles in ecommerce scaling.

Still, it may need to include fine print that it can suspend Mayday service for abuse. If you Mayday because you’re lonely, or want to show someone your cat photos, it might need to cut you off. If you try to show the representative porn through the screenshare or verbally terrorize them, it might need to ban you for life. But what if you’re just really lazy and call in every day with semi-legitimate questions? Amazon will need to determine where to draw the line.

Maybe the fundamental challenges of scaling Mayday signals Amazon doesn’t have a massive amount of active Kindle users today, as Benedict Evans wonders. Amazon is notoriously secretive about Kindle sales and engagement numbers, so we don’t know what level of HDX devices it might sell and have to support.

But if anyone can figure out how to make this all work and save us from support call menu hell, it’s probably Bezos. Turning cost-prohibitive fantasies into margin-less realities is his specialty. And if the problem isn’t the volume of Mayday requests per customer but the total thanks to high Kindle HDX sales, things could be worse. Just ask the Microsoft Surface.

Valve Announces Steam Machines

Valve Announces Steam MachinesThe other day Valve announced SteamOS, and now the company has announced new hardware that would be powered by it and Valve is calling the hardware Steam Machines. These are basically modified PCs that will allow gamers to play games on their television and at the same time fight consoles, such as the PlayStation and Xbox One, for control over your living room. As it stands the Steam Machines will be entering beta testing this year and Valve has announced plans to ship about 300 of these machines to gamers who have signed up and have been selected by Valve to participate in the beta test.

According to Valve, gamers will be able to play hundreds of games natively during the beta and come 2014, Valve expects that there will be a multitude of different Steam Machines to choose from made by different manufacturers, presumably with different hardware specifications and price points. If anything this is a great way for Valve to start distributing its Steam platform on a larger scale, although the platform is pretty popular as it is, but this could take things to the next level. For gamers who are interested in participating in the Steam Machines beta, hit up Valve’s Steam Machines website for the details on how to participate in it.

French Government Investigating Apple’s Contracts With Local Carriers

French Government Investigating Apples Contracts With Local CarriersWhen it comes to Apple dealing with carriers to allow them to officially carry the iPhone on their networks, the deals they make are pretty much a secret, although it has been suggested in the past that usually carriers are required to prepurchase a huge inventory of iPhones and essentially commit themselves to it in order to sell it on their network. In any case it seems that the French government is interested in how Apple conducts their business with carriers, at least in France, and have launched an investigation and are looking into the contracts Apple and the French carriers have signed with one another.

At this time both Apple and the French government’s anti-fraud and antitrust unit has yet to comment on the matter. It is unclear why the French government is suddenly so interested in how Apple conducts its business, but presumably they might be worried about unfair competition. In fact prior to NTT DOCOMO officially signing on with Apple to offer the iPhone, the Japanese carrier did state in the past that one of the reasons they were hesitant to sign with Apple was due to the numerous obligations that they would be held to if they were to sign the deal, so perhaps this could be something the French government is curious about.

Samsung Phone Trade-ins See A 210% Spike During iPhone Weekend Launch

Samsung Phone Trade ins See A 210% Spike During iPhone Weekend LaunchThe iPhone 5s was launched just last week and despite some criticizing the phone, there are those who are genuinely excited by it, but excited enough to jump platforms? While this does not speak for all Android users, it seems that trade-in website, Gazelle, found a 210% increase in the number of Samsung phones that were being traded in during the iPhone 5s’ weekend launch. Of course there’s no telling in what they traded in their devices for as they could simply be switching to a new Android phone from either HTC, Sony, LG, or Motorola, but is it a coincidence that this spike in trade ins was during the weekend that saw the release of the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c?

There’s no way of telling, at least for now, but what do you guys think of the possibility? Any of our readers decided to jump ship to iOS after seeing the new iOS 7 and what the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c had to offer? Or is this spike in Samsung trade ins merely a coincidence? Given Apple’s fierce rivalry with Samsung, it would certainly be something of an embarrassment for the South Korean tech giant to have their devices traded in for an iPhone!

‘Teachers Village’ Developers Have Big Dreams For Downtown Newark

NEWARK, N.J. — If Ron Beit has his way, the next big thing in urban renewal won’t come from any of the political elite or the CEOs in cocktail attire who gathered in a parking lot here Wednesday morning for the ribbon-cutting on his latest project.

    It will come from teachers.

A founding partner and CEO of the Manhattan-based developer RBH Group, Beit said his shift in vision came from walking into THRIVE Academy, a charter school in Newark’s central ward.

Teamsters President James P. Hoffa Tells Ted Cruz To Stop ‘Misusing’ His Obamacare Criticism

WASHINGTON — It seems Teamsters President James P. Hoffa has tired of hearing his name come from the mouth of Sen. Ted Cruz.

In countless anti-Obamacare television ads, as well as in his marathon anti-Obamacare speech on the Senate floor this week, the Texas Republican has referred over and over to Hoffa’s previous criticism of the Affordable Care Act. Lest anyone think the two men are buddies or something, the Teamsters issued a statement Wednesday demanding that Cruz and his Republican allies stop citing Hoffa in their attacks on the health care law.

“I call on Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. David Vitter and others to cease and desist from misusing our constructive comments in their destructive campaign to hobble the president and the nation,” Hoffa said.
