Windows Phone crossing double digit market share in parts of Europe

Kantar’s numbers have always been relatively kind to Windows Phone. Well, at least as kind as any numbers can be, we suppose. That trend continues with the recent report that Microsoft’s smartphone platform has crossed the double digit mark in market share in parts of Europe. Specifically, it has hit 10.8 percent in France and 12 percent in Great Britain. Things are not quite as rosy across the rest of the continent, but Windows Phone does own a cumulative 9.2 percent of the field in the “big five European markets”: Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Of course, that’s still a distant third to iOS and Android, the latter of which owns a staggering 70.1 percent of the market, according to Kantar. BlackBerry, on the other hand, is continuing its stunning free fall, dropping to just 2.4 percent in those same five markets, just ahead of the nebulous “other.”

There haven’t been too many other exciting changes in the smartphone and carrier landscape over the last three months. But, if you want to take a gander at some more numbers, you’ll find them at the source link.

Make Your Own Jerky Without a Dehydrator

Make Your Own Jerky Without a Dehydrator

Why pay $5 for a tiny bag of beef jerky that’s been sitting on that gas station shelf since the Carter administration? Just because it looks like leather doesn’t mean it has to taste like it. Instead, make your own delectable dried-out meats using nothing more than an oven.

Facebook expands Graph Search to include status updates and posts

DNP Facebook expands Graph Search to include status updates and posts

Today, Facebook is giving Graph Search something of a power-up by adding status updates and posts to the list of content it can access. Previously, the revamped search engine could only scan four types of information — people, photos, places and interests — when presented with queries like “who are my friends in New York City?” Now, if someone types in “posts about bacon from the last month,” your recent public complaint about the wilted lettuce in your B.L.T. will pop up. Also included in the expansion are check-ins, comments and photo captions. As it has at every step of the Graph Search rollout, Facebook is quick to assure its users that the feature respects your privacy settings, so only content that’s been shared with you or is otherwise publicly accessible will show up in search results. For more information, head on over to the source link below.

Thinking of quitting? Make a YouTube video as moving as this

Dancing out of a job.

(Credit: Nvsdzb/YouTube Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

Your boss is an annoying little worm, isn’t he?

He doesn’t respect you. He doesn’t promote you. He makes you work late, while he’s out at a fancy restaurant, “networking.”

So you want to quit. And you want to do it good. What should you do?

In the case of Marina Shifrin — whose bosses don’t sound like the most accommodating in the world, if you take her word for it — she decided to make a dancing video and post it to YouTube.

Conveniently, the company that she worked for is familiar with the idea of viral video. It’s called Next Media Animation. It’s a news video company, based in Taiwan.

In the video, which has already enjoyed more than 600,000 views, Shifrin is at work at 4:30 a.m. She says: “For almost two years, I’ve sacrificed my relationships, time, and energy for this job.”

Well, when I say she “says” this, the words are on the screen. Shifrin is dancing to the tune of Kanye’s “Gone.”

Boost Mobile iPhone 5s And iPhone 5c Purported Ads Leaked

Boost Mobile iPhone 5s And iPhone 5c Purported Ads Leaked

Boost Mobile is a prepaid carrier which is owned by Sprint. Boost has never officially sold iPhones before, despite the fact that the smartphones have been available from Sprint since 2011. That might be about to change though. The infamous Twitter leaker @evleaks has posted purported Boost Mobile ads which point towards the possibility of the prepaid carrier offering both new iPhones, the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c, for sale in the near future.

The leaked ads don’t explicitly mention when both new iPhones are going to be available. No pricing information is present on them, but the ads do suggest that the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c might be eligible for Boost’s monthly unlimited plan with “shrinking payments.” Boost won’t actually be the first prepaid U.S. carrier to offer the iPhone. Rivals Cricket and Straight Talk have offered the iPhone in the past, whereas Virgin Mobile will launch the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on October 1st. The U.S. branch of Virgin Mobile is controlled by Sprint. Apple unveiled both new iPhones earlier this month, they were released in select markets on September 20th. Soon after the launch, Apple claimed that demand for both new iPhones is “incredible.” [Image via Twitter]

Flock 0.8 Is Looking Pretty Darn Good

This article was written on May 17, 2007 by CyberNet.

I just saw a post on the Flock blog today reminding everyone of the test day last week for a pre-release version of Flock 0.8. The point of these test days are to find bugs and problems in Flock before it is released to the public, and it sounds like it should be in final form within a month or so.

Early this year I updated you on what was happening with this release, and it has progressed quite nicely since then. Since I’m a pre-release junkie I couldn’t help but see what has improved since my last look at the browser. After installation of the latest nightly I was presented with a nice loading screen:

    Flock 0.8

Then the first thing that I saw…a stunning new interface. The placement of the bookmark toolbar (and it’s appearance) is perfect as it sits alongside of the shortcuts for many Flock-specific services. Oh yeah, and I can’t forget to mention the prominent notification bar that alerts users when feeds, and a few other things, are available:

    Flock 0.8

A lot of the configuration and management of social networks is done through the sidebar now. This is a nice change because you’re no longer dealing with hordes of popups or wasted screen space when trying to manage accounts:

    Flock 0.8

The blog editor could still use a little TLC because it really only offers the most basic features for writing articles. Seeing that this browser is built around social networks I would think that adding YouTube videos or Flickr images would be astoundingly easy, but such a feature appears to be missing. At least they do make your clipboard readily accessible:

    Flock 0.8

Next up, the Flock feed reader. Not much has changed here, but as always it provides a quick and flexible way to read through your news. You can choose between viewing feeds in one or two columns, as well as a headlines or full-text view. It will automatically mark the feeds as read once you scroll past a news story, and will also scale any images in the articles so that they fit the width of the column:

    Flock 0.8

This last screenshot helps put it all in perspective. It shows the bookmark manager for the sidebar, the Media Streams bar, and the My World start page. The Media Streams bar is cool because it lets you search sites like Flickr and YouTube while displaying the results right there in the bar, without having to visit a site. If you double-click on any of the results it will instantly take you to the page where that result was found.

My World is simply a start page for Flock that gives you a quick overview of everything that has been going on. It summarizes what your favorite sites, feeds, and media are so that they are only a click away. In other words it’s a homepage customized to you:

     Flock 0.8

And I can’t forget one of the best improvements for the new Flock: Firefox 2! Now that Firefox 2 is used as the backbone (instead of Firefox 1.5) new features like spell checking, anti-phishing, and session restore are all part of the browser. Flock is shaping up to be a great browser for anyone actively involved in social networks, and when the final release hits the Web I’m sure there will be a lot of people raving about it.

Scientists Have Figured Out How to Turn Off Hunger

Recently, scientists have been coming up with more and more, er, creative ways of combatting the potentially fatal effects of obesity. Soon though, people with overeating disorders might have a single solution that stops the problem at the root. We could just turn off part of their brain.
