Xbox One Will Launch With 300 Gamerpics

Xbox One Will Launch With 300 Gamerpics

We’re not sure just how popular gamerpics are these days for the Xbox 360 as avatars have taken over the need for a topical or cool gamerpic. When the Xbox 360 first launched, Microsoft launched a rather small number of gamerpics, which they eventually expanded on in the coming years. It looks as though Microsoft isn’t entirely giving up on its gamerpics as they will be making a total of 300 different gamerpics available at the launch of the Xbox One. (more…)

Bill Nye the Beethoven nut survives natural selection

    Other-worldly.

(Credit: Boom Fiyah XIII/YouTube Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

It was more a drunken evening in Paso Robles than a paso doble.

But Bill Nye somehow conjured an image that will long stay in many minds. For, on Monday’s “Dancing With The Stars,” he channeled Beethoven.

That would be Beethoven dancing the paso doble.

This may not have been something that has ever been tried in the cosmos before. It should never be attempted again.

He began at the piano, disconcertoed. He ended with a freakish forte: on his knees, his bewigged head sunken into the lissom lap of partner Tyne Stecklein.

In between, what he lacked in physical control, he gained in physical momentum. What he lacked in swerve, he gained in verve.

His arms were weak, but his legs were maniacally willing, managing to jerk simultaneously in two directions at the same time. Neither, sadly, was the right direction.

The Horse is a Lie: ‘horse_ebooks’ Twitter spam is performance art

The Horse is a Lie 'horse_ebooks' Twitter spam is performance art

Twitter is quite the medium. An endless source of looping GIFs, “viral” videos, and, sadly, bad advertising. Most of the latter category is quickly dismissed by the block and report spam features of Twitter, but the occasional spambot elevates its “craft” to a level of surreal bliss which begs attention. “horse_ebooks” is perhaps Twitter’s best example of that phenomenon, offering indecipherable (and delightful) missives that are heavily retweeted and always nonsensical. “How to get the best bargains in satellite,” for instance. Sadly, it looks like we’ve all been had.

What many (ourselves included) thought to be an accidentally hilarious spam account for a low-rent eBook publishing firm is actually a long-running art installation by Jacon Bakkila (a 29-year-old Buzzfeed employee). Bakkila outed the ruse this morning in an exhibit at New York City’s FitzRoy Gallery named “Horse_ebooks 2,” where Bakkila himself and two friends are answering phones all day (from 10AM to 9PM ET) and giving users a verbal taste of the content you’d normally read on…well, the horse_ebooks Twitter account (the phone number is 213-444-0102 if you’d like to call).

It’s unclear if the account will continue from here. It sounds like a no, though, as Bakkila tells The New York Times that, “The goal was not to appropriate the account but to become the account,” referencing the account’s previous Russian owner and its original use (to sell eBooks). Gawker‘s got a walkthrough of the art gallery installation right here, should you wish to dive even deeper into this madness.

Fermilab’s New Neutrino Cannon Shoots Subterranean Subatomics

Fermilab's New Neutrino Cannon Shoots Subterranean Subatomics

Given how rarely neutrinos interact with other elementary particles, they’re notoriously difficult to study and consequently, our understanding of these electrically neutral subatomic entities remains rather sketchy. However, the Department of Energy’s famed Fermilab in Batavia, IL aims to unlock these particles’ secrets by blasting them through hundreds of miles of the Earth’s crusts.

HTC reportedly suffering One mini shortage due to casing problems

HTC reportedly suffering One Mini case shortage

HTC just can’t catch a break, it seems: Reuters claims that the company now faces a One mini shortage due to both “design difficulties” with the casing as well as other, unnamed factors. The site’s sources didn’t explain the shortfall in detail, although we likely can’t chalk it up to popularity. Analysts weren’t expecting HTC to ship more than 200,000 One minis per month, which suggests that any supply problems would hurt the firm’s bottom line. We’ve reached out to HTC for comment, and we’ll let you know if it can confirm or deny its manufacturing woes. In the meantime, we’d suggest buying the full-sized One if you can’t find its tiny counterpart in stores.
