How To Be A Fly On the Wall From 100 Feet Up

Last month we wrote about what it’s like to be a window cleaner in New York City. The New York Times did a video profiling veteran Spiderman Brent Weingard and documenting him cleaning windows or just, you know, hanging out. It was great. But you gotta wonder who was behind the camera on that piece. Because whoever it was was up there too.

Classic ‘Star Trek’ episodes get retro poster treatment

Juan Ortiz has created vintage posters for each episode of the original "Star Trek."

I recently had the pleasure of seeing George Takei on-stage at Comiccon Montreal. He regaled fans with tales of playing Sulu on the original “Star Trek” and explained how the name came from the Sulu Sea.

The onetime Enterprise helmsman also noted that the series will be 50 years old in 2016. That’s not quite around the corner, but here’s an aesthetically awesome way to prepare for the celebration.

A new book on the art of Juan Ortiz contains retro-style promo posters for every episode of the original series. The unique illustrations look like they were walked right out of a Desilu Productions studio in the 1960s.

Living Cube is an All-in-One Living Space

If you’re strapped for space in your flat, then the Living Cube might just be the thing for you. It’s still a one-of-a-kind build for now, but you should be able to make your own or have one made if you’ve got the carpentry skills.

Designed by Till Könneker, the Living Cube is an entertainment center, living room, open wardrobe, walk-in closet, and library in one. There’s a loft bed at the top which looks comfortable enough. If you’re not into books, then you can just fill the shelves up with your random stuff. The wardrobe has a lot of space for shirts and coats and there’s two rows of shelves at the bottom for your shoes.

The highlight has to be the walk-in closet, which offers additional space for everything else you can’t fit on the external shelves.

The Auto Vivisectionist: Inside GM’s Secret Teardown Lab

It’s the killing ground where hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of SUVs, sports cars, and sedans meet their grisly end before they have more than a handful of miles on the clock. Some of General Motor‘s earliest work on building new models comes as much from tearing apart cars as it does piecing together […]

Project Subway: Fast Food Fashion

Whoever said fashion and couture must be made from expensive and exotic textiles obviously haven’t laid their eyes on Subway’s newest creative marketing strategy: Project Subway. It spoofs the fashion designer reality TV show, Project Runway, and tasked contestants to come up with the best and most creative fashion designs using Subway sandwich wrappers, napkins and other packaging as their materials.

Four designers competed, and designer Danilo Gabrielli emerged victorious. It reportedly took Danilo 14 hours, spread over two weeks, to create the two Subway couture dresses that he submitted for the competition.

The campaign was launched by Subway in an attempt to encourage people to try one of their sandwiches during their September “SUBtember” footlong promotion. The cool part? Project Subway was actually a part of New York Fashion Week.

Hands On With The Brooklyn-Made Makerbot Digitizer

digitizer

The Makerbot Digitizer looked too good to be true. It was a solid, compact 3D scanner that could replicate a solid object without much fuss and had a level of detail unparalleled in the home scanning market. Now it’s clear that this is much more than a compelling idea.

I saw the Makerbot in action yesterday and spoke with Makerbot CEO Bre Pettis about his experience building the entire system – from PCBs to case – in America and how it felt to be a manufacturer in the heart of Brooklyn. “It feels great,” he said.

The whole system is surprisingly light and uses Class 1 lasers and a special camera to gather a point cloud based on the object you’re scanning. You tell the system how light or dark the object is and then click a button. A few minutes later you have a complete object that you can modify, edit, or augment digitally and then print using almost any printer. It also exports files into Makerbot compatible .thing files.

A turntable rotates the object slowly so every surface is scanned.

The Digitizer will ship in October and sell for $1,400. Pettis promised that they would have enough on hand to meet demand and that his factory was working overtime to get the devices ready.

NYPD to iPhone owners: Hurry up and download iOS 7

Thieves are going to love that gold one.

When a policeman asks me to do something, I can be overcome with suspicion.

For example, when a policeman asked me to pull over at the next exit on the freeway, I had a feeling it was for his benefit, rather than mine.

So when the New York Police Department started handing out flyers outside the city’s Apple stores on Friday, I had to wonder how this would help them.

Well, it would appear that the police in New York are entirely fed up of chasing after iPhone thieves.

In New York, iPhone and iPad theft leaped 40 percent in 2012. It’s showing no signs of slowing.

So the NYPD would like all iPhone owners to download iOS 7 immediately.

As AllThingsD reports, the fliers explained: “Should your iPhone get lost or stolen, it cannot be reprogrammed without an Apple ID and password.”

This is thanks to Activation Lock, which prevents a thief from deactivating your Find My Phone feature.

There is a slight kink in the police’s confidence, given that Apple … [Read more]

Identify Web Fonts Used on Sites

This article was written on September 09, 2011 by CyberNet.

Font lookup

When you go to a website you may see a font that looks interesting and sparks some curiosity as to what font type was used. There are all kinds of web developer tools that make finding this info pretty easy, but all you really need is the WhatFont bookmarklet. When you run the bookmarklet you’ll be able to click on any of the text on the page you’re viewing to see more details about it.

As you can see in the screenshot above WhatFont tells you the font family and size, line height, color, and an example of the upper/lower case alphabet using that particular font. Plus it is all wrapped up in a beautiful popup window.

If you’re not a fan of bookmarklets there is also a Chrome extension available, but I prefer the bookmarklet since it works in all the major browsers without having to worry about installing yet another extension.

Smartphone Camera Remote lets you capture photos without direct handset manipulation

smartphone-cam-remoteIf you think that you have an eye for detail whenever you wield a camera, then you would surely have maximized your smartphone camera’s capability with your collection of digital memories over time. After all, the angles that you capture are pretty much limited by where you are physically, but perhaps things can be spiced up a wee bit with the £14.99 Smartphone Camera Remote.

Yes sir, the Smartphone Camera Remote is certainly aptly named, where those who love snapping selfies will probably be able to go nuts with this bad boy. Sporting a 3 meter wireless range, it will be able to fit you as well as the rest of your merry bunch in the frame, and it will be accompanied by a handy removable prop-up stand. No longer do you need to capture a selfie with part of your arm appearing in the photo, showing the world that “selfie bicep” that you have been working on for the longest time. All you need to do is make sure everyone’s in the frame, and press the button in order to trigger the shutter, and you’re good to go. Go on, your imagination’s the limit.

BBM Is Being Delayed For Android and iOS

BBM Is Being Delayed For Android and iOS

Look, we all know that BlackBerry is in a tail spin and has been for awhile. And at this point the situation can only become an incredible underdog story or a put the dog out of his misery moment. There’s no status quo anymore. But somehow the hole keeps being dug deeper. BlackBerry announced an abysmal early earnings report and major layoffs on Friday, and now there’s something else. BlackBerry was forced to release a statement yesterday saying that the new BBM apps for iOS and Android, which were supposed to be released yesterday and today respectively, are being delayed. And that’s just suboptimal.
