CyanogenMod To Bring AirPlay Mirroring On Android

The Apple TV set-top box offers a feature called AirPlay which allows users to stream content from a compatible device onto their television. There are a number of third party apps available in the Google Play Store which bring this feature to Android devices. However, such apps are often limited in their feature set. Koushik Dutta, the Vice President of Engineering at Cyanogen, today posted a video showing off AirPlay Mirroring from an HTC One. He says that the feature is “coming soon to a CyanogenMod near you,” which implies that AirPlay Mirroring will be built inside the OS.

Dutta hasn’t given a concrete release date as yet, so we’re left guessing. In the past, he has worked on bringing support for a variety of streaming protocols in CyanogenMod. The list includes Roku and DLNA compatible devices, AirPlay is the newest addition to the list. Cyanogen develops some of the most widely used custom ROMs for Android devices. Recently it was incorporated into a formal company with $7 million in funding. The company is expected to partner with a hardware manufacturer to begin shipping devices that come with CyanogenMod pre-installed. Oppo N1 smartphone, which is due to be announced on September 23rd, is believed to be the first CyanogenMod powered smartphone.

Why the gold iPhone 5s is a hit

Apple’s decision to build a gold-colored iPhone 5s is about more than just offering another color to consumers. For one thing, the margins are quite high on the device, and the more colors it offers, the more money it can make. But there’s more to the gold iPhone than meets the eye at first blush: […]

iPhone 5S film: Fascinating, fun look at Apple Store line-sitters

Warning: Watching the following short film may cause you to drop everything and sleep on a sidewalk for two weeks to buy a gold smartphone.

Casey Neistat — an indie filmmaker, onetime Apple whistleblower and a director of commercials for companies like Nike and Mercedes-Benz — has made a nice little minidoc about all those seemingly obsessed people who queue up outside Apple Stores to be the first to bag the latest iGadget.

In documenting the launch of the iPhone 5S/5C at the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, Neistat, along with partners Gabriel Nussbaum and Jack Coyne, presents the viewer with a range of major and minor characters, steering clear of sitcommy fanboy stereotypes like those … [Read more]

BlackBerry ‘C-Series’ Entry Level Smartphone Pictured

BlackBerry C Series Entry Level Smartphone Pictured

A few days ago the BlackBerry Z30 smartphone was announced, it is the company’s first phablet powered by the BB10 platform. Just yesterday the company announced that it is going to reduce its product roadmap from six to four devices, two high end and two entry level. While there’s no information on what those four devices are going to be, a new BlackBerry smartphone from the alleged “Cafe-Series” or “C-Series” has been pictured. This is said to be an entry level device which carries the codename “Americano.”

As per rumors, the C-Series will include two devices, one full touch and one with a QWERTY keyboard. Since they’re supposed to be entry-level devices, specifications aren’t expected to be that grand. Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processors with 5 megapixel cameras and 4.2 – 4.5 inch 720p displays are rumored. There’s really not much known about the BlackBerry C-Series devices at this point in time, there’s certainly no information about the pricing and availability. Yesterday BlackBerry announced that it expects to take a $1 billion hit in operating loss for Q2, most of which is accounted for by unmoved inventory. Up till now the three BB10 devices it has released, barring the Z30, haven’t been able to bring back its lost market share. Will the C-Series be able to perform? Time will tell. [Image via BBIN]

NASA ends Deep Impact comet-hunting mission after eight years

NASA says Deep Impact's comethunting mission is over, eight years later

After more than eight years, NASA’s comet-hunting Deep Impact mission has come to an abrupt close. The agency has stopped trying to communicate with the mission probe after losing contact on August 8th. It’s not clear what went wrong, but NASA suspects that it may have lost orientation control, guaranteeing that the Deep Impact vehicle would lose power and freeze. It’s going out on a good note, however. Like NASA’s Mars rovers, Deep Impact easily outlasted its intended lifespan — after successfully intercepting the comet Tempel 1 in 2005, it went on to study three more comets as well as numerous exoplanets. We’ll miss the probe’s continued research, but its legacy should live on through other projects.

GSM Moto X Developer Edition Available Now

GSM Moto X Developer Edition Available Now

Motorola had announced earlier this year that it would offer two Moto X variants “just for developers.” One of those variants went on sale a couple of days ago, it was compatible with Verizon. The GSM Moto X developer edition smartphone is now available for purchase through Motorola’s website. It costs $649.99 and does not require a two year contract with a carrier. The GSM variant is compatible with the likes of AT&T and T-Mobile.

There are some differences which set the developer editions apart from the other variants. There’s 32GB of onboard storage and a special color combination which consists of black on the front and a woven white color on the back. No Moto Maker customization options are available for the developer edition units. Motorola has also included a “stamp of approval” on the back, should anyone have any doubts about your developer status. The most important thing that these variants come with is the unlockable bootloader. An unlockable bootloader means that developers will have the luxury of tinkering around with advanced settings, and even the ability to install custom firmware. Though do keep in mind that regardless of them being developer specific units, the device’s warranty will be void when the bootloader is unlocked.

BBM For iOS Rolling Out Now

BBM For iOS Rolling Out Now

The wait is finally over, BBM for iOS has already begun rolling out in certain regions. BlackBerry announced back in May this year that they were finally opening up the once exclusive instant messaging service for the two most widely used platforms in the world. A few days back it said that the apps will be released over this weekend. BBM for iOS is now available in the iTunes App Store. iPad compatibility is not present at launch.

BBM for Android is going to be released this weekend as well, it should start rolling out later today as well. Though only yesterday a working apk file was leaked on the internet. At this point in time the Google Play Store is riddled with as many as eight fake BBM for Android apps, so exercise caution when downloading. It will be better to check online if the official version is available and then use the legitimate Play Store link to download, we’ll have it up for you once the app is released. BBM for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store. It requires iOS 6.0 or later and has been optimized for the iPhone 5. The app weighs in around 30MB.

Game of Thrones Map Puzzle: Set Down Our Deeds

Replicate the opening credits of HBO’s Game of Thrones with this multilayered puzzle map of Westeros. Aside from the flat map of the war-torn continent, the kit also includes tiny replicas of cities and castles, plus a few other figurines. Make sure to hum the opening theme while you’re putting it together.

game of thrones 4d puzzle map by 4d cityscapemagnify

The map was made by 4D Cityscape, a company known for two things: building puzzle maps of cities and misunderstanding the concept of the 4th dimension. This definitively 3-dimensional continent puzzle is made of 1,200 pieces. Then there’s a smaller 200-piece puzzle that sits on top of the continent puzzle that outlines the “current landscape” of Westeros. I assume that refers to the layout of the land based on the TV series so far. The final layer consists of the aforementioned figurines of cities and castles. There are also “over 45 flags to mark famous landmarks, 10 sigils to mark the Houses, and 5 battle markers to learn the locations of five major battles.”

You can pre-order the puzzle map from ThinkGeek for $60 (USD), and you’ll have it in plenty of time as a gift for that Game of Thrones fan on your holiday shopping list.

Why I’m Holding Out for a Gold iPhone

Why I'm Holding Out for a Gold iPhone

I’m all giggly and giddy because I’m so close to the moment next week when I can plunk down my dollars for an iPhone 5S in shimmering gold. I’m holding out for it. You might think it’s tacky, or gaudy, or absurd. But I knew the moment I saw it that it’s the iPhone I deserve.

Apple A7 Processor Is Manufactured By Samsung

Apple A7 Processor Is Manufactured By Samsung

The rivalry between Apple and Samsung is no secret. Both companies are head to head against each other in the global mobile device market, not only that, they’re also involved in a number of lawsuits which don’t seem to have an end in sight. Despite that, Samsung and Apple have had a big working relationship, with the former supplying parts and components for the fruit company’s various devices. Prior to the release of the new iPhones, it was rumored that Apple might move its processor business away from Samsung, but it has been discovered that the new A7 processor is manufactured by none other than the Korean behemoth.

The folks at iFixit and Chipworks came together to tear down the iPhone 5S after it was released on September 20th. They have discovered that design and manufacturing processes on Apple’s new A7 chip indicate its manufacturer. Taiwan’s TSMC was rumored to become the major supplier for Apple once its contract with Samsung ended, but it appears that Apple hasn’t decided to end its reliance on Samsung just yet. The company is also expected to supply Apple with Retina display panels for the iPad mini 2, which according to recent rumors might be unveiled at a separate media event next month.
