Sharp's 70inch, THXcertified Aquos Ultra 4K TV goes on sale in the US for $7,500

We are well past mid-August, which is when Sharp initially estimated its new 70-inch Aquos 4K Ultra HD LED TV would begin hitting shelves. Despite the late arrival, however, something tells us folks will still be glad to have yet another choice when shopping for their next 4K television set. To make things better, Sharp’s super high-res, THX-certified Smart TV is set to be carrying a $7,499.99 MSRP here in the States, making it about $500 cheaper than when it was originally announced. Those of you interested shouldn’t have trouble finding one, as Sharp says it’ll be available at many regional and major retailers across the country.

Nexus 5 due in October with Android 4.4 KitKat, says report

One more smartphone to choose from this fall?

(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)

The Moto X and iPhone 5S are finally here, but what remaining superphone on the horizon should early adopters and anxious upgraders still consider waiting for?

The answer: a Nexus 5 made by LG that will drop next month, if a report from Digitimes on Wednesday is to be believed.

The Taiwan-based site and its supply chain sources seem to be further confirming what’s now been suspected for several weeks — a Nexus 5 is just around the corner.

A new Nexus has seemed like a strong possibility since the days leading up to Google I/O, but the sense of inevitability has been increasing recently since Nexus 4 prices were slashed, then sold out, and FCC filings were spotted.

Facebook Announces Redesigned iOS App

Facebook Announces Redesigned iOS App

Apple released iOS 7 today and we’re already seeing a lot of apps being updated. Most of them have been redesigned to complement the new “flat” user interface that iOS 7 touts. Facebook today announced a redesigned version of its iOS app. Facebook’s product manager for iOS, Michael Sharon, says that the app has been completely redesigned to fit nicely within Apple’s new iOS update.

The main navigation bar has now been moved to the bottom, the toolbar that slid out from the left has been removed. Tabs for Friend Requests, Messages, Notifications and News Feed are now located in the new navigation bar at the bottom. There’s also a new “bonus” tab called More, which lets users open other Facebook features such as Photos or Events without losing their place in the other tabs. To move from one tab to another, users can simply swipe across the navigation bar. The updated app will be available to iOS 5 and iOS 6 users as well, though Sharon says that there will be minute style differences between them. The redesigned app is only going to be available for iPhone and iPod touch, Sharon says that Facebook doesn’t have plans to redesign the iPad app since the old design suits tablet users best. Facebook’s updated app will go live in the App Store later today.

Short film ‘Noah’ will make you think twice about Facebook

    (Credit: Screenshot by Tim Hornyak/CNET)

Would you watch a film that’s set entirely on someone’s computer screen? As in the person’s Skype, Facebook, iPhone, and Chatroulette conversations?

It sounds unbearable, but “Noah” is a Canadian short film that quickly pulls you into the multitasked, uberdistracted insanity that is modern relationships.

Part of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the 17-minute portrayal of teenager Noah Lennox’s unraveling love life feels eerily familiar, as well as a sign of things to come. The video has garnered nearly 1 million views since it was posted to YouTube on September 9.

“Noah” is directed by Walter Woodman and Patrick Cederberg, Ryerson University film grads. It begins on Noah’s iMac but quickly moves to his iPhone screen and other platforms as he chats with his girlfriend Amy.

Battlefield 4 for Xbox One may get Kinect-based look controls

Battlefield 4 for Xbox One may get Kinectbased look controls and voice commands

If you’ve wanted to immerse your body in a first-person shooter, you’ve typically had to use a complex simulator. Battlefield 4 may soon provide a decidedly simpler (and cheaper) alternative. DICE’s Patrick Bach has revealed to Xbox Wire that the game may use the Xbox One’s Kinect sensor for head-tracking look controls, such as leaning around a corner. Voice commands might also be available, Bach says. There’s no guarantees that BF4 will get the new input methods, but DICE may have competition as an incentive. Infinity Ward recently hinted to Official Xbox Magazine that Call of Duty: Ghosts could use Kinect for more than navigating menus, so there’s a chance that at least one of the two games will have motion control in the future.

The Not-So-Crazy Plan to Solve NYC's Trash Woes With Pneumatic Tubes

New Yorkers have a history of experimenting with pneumatic tubes—both for mail delivery (seen above) and public transit—but only one version ever really stuck: An automated vacuum trash collection system beneath the streets of Roosevelt Island.
