Vishnu Pandit, Navy Yard Shooting Victim, ‘Lived The American Dream’

WASHINGTON – Vishnu B. Pandit, 61, wasn’t just an engineer and suburban family man, says M. Nuns Jain, a friend from their days at a Calcutta university. He was a “pioneer.”

Pandit had immigrated to the United States from Mumbai in the mid 1970s. Once he arrived, he quickly earned a second undergraduate degree in marine engineering, from the University of Michigan, and then a master’s. He had led the way and soon cajoled Jain to join him in the U.S. “He persuaded me to come to the States,” Jain said. “He was a pioneer. I followed him … I wasn’t too keen on it. He talked me into it.”

Carlita Dead: White Bengal Tiger Dies At Zoo Miami (PHOTOS)

Zoo Miami announced that they had to make the difficult decision Monday to euthanize one of their most iconic residents, Carlita, a 21-year-old white Bengal tiger who has been living with them for almost two decades.

RIP Carlita. We will miss you terribly!,” Zoo Miami officials posted on the park’s Facebook page, announcing her passing.

Zoo staff says that in May 2012, Carlita began to show signs of aging and was relocated to a special large enclosure in a secluded quarantine area. There she could peacefully live the rest of her days in a quiet and relaxed environment.

Madonna Got A Penis-Shaped Bong For Her Birthday, Per Her Reddit AMA

“Huge” Reddit fan Madonna took to the sharing site for an AMA on Monday night and it included more than a few gems.

In a session that amassed over 12,000 comments, the immortal pop star abstained from answering a question about Lady Gaga, revealed she’d like to work with Daft Punk, and mentioned a dream she had about Brad Pitt.

But — most importantly — she told the Reddit community the best gift she received for her 55th birthday:

America’s First Bookless Public Library Has Arrived Right On Schedule

America's First Bookless Public Library Has Arrived Right On Schedule

America’s first completely bookless public library opened in San Antonio this past weekend. That is, if you define a "book" as words printed on paper pages which are bound together with glue. But if you define "book" a bit more liberally, the new library has plenty them. Over 10,000 ebook titles, in fact. All of which can be accessed from their 900 e-readers, 57 computers, 40 iPads, and four touchscreen tables.

Nix Color Sensor Copies Colors from Physical Objects: Real Life Eyedropper Tool

One of my earliest posts here was about the Color Picker, a concept for a pen that let you copy colors from your surroundings and then doodle with that color. Matthew Sheridan brings us a step closer to that magical device with the Nix Color Sensor. It’s basically half of the Color Picker pen, letting you copy colors from physical objects.

Actually the Nix was designed to do more than just copy colors. With the help of its complementary desktop and mobile apps, Nix can save and place notes on your captured swatches, show you the RGB, HSL, HSV, Lab, XYZ, HTML, or CMYK values of those colors and even look for a paint store that sells the matching paint.

Pledge at least $99 CAD (~$96 USD) on Kickstarter to get a Nix sensor as a reward. The iOS and Android apps will be bundled with the sensor; I’m not sure if the Windows and Mac apps will be free as well. I wonder if Pixy can be modded to work like Nix.

HP Blasts Rumors That It Is Making A Smartphone

HP Blasts Rumors That It Is Making A Smartphone

It was first rumored a few days ago that HP was going to make an entry into the smartphone market once again. The company has kept itself out ever since its webOS powered devices weren’t able to gain any traction. HP was rumored to be making a Windows Phone powered smartphone, but now the company has issued a firm denial. A PR representative for HP said that the story is “fabrication and is not related to anything HP has in the works,” “someone is making stuff up,” the representative says.

Senior director of consumer PCs and tablets for Asia-Pacific at HP, Yam Su Yin, said in an interview earlier this year that HP would enter the smartphone market once again. “The answer is yes,” Yim said, adding that no timetable could be given at that point in time. Yin said that HP was keeping an eye on the smartphone market and was evaluating ways in which it could differentiate itself in the highly competitive market. Does this mean that HP would rather opt for Android as the operating system for its smartphone? Its too soon to say right now, but it is likely that rumors of a HP smartphone will surface again in the future.
