Dancing With Bill Nye: ‘It was like being waxed’

Waxed.

(Credit: AccessHollywood/YouTube Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

The nerd went for the sexual angle. Well, don’t they always?

In the pre-dance package on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars,” Bill Nye declared that he and his partner, Tyne Stecklein, were to be called “Hot Knowledge.”

As they rehearsed, he expounded to her that the best couples enjoyed “sexual tension.”

His partner wasn’t caught hook, Stecklein and sinker. It was, I fear, only the last part.

Though he professes himself an enthusiastic swing dancer, Nye’s pendulum had to waft over to the cha-cha.

Tech history in the 17 seasons of this show was not on his side. Mark Cuban and Steve Wozniak had both tried manfully but left with their tails between their dancing feet.

Taking his turn among the athletes, the actors, and the aspiring has-beens, Nye’s cha-cha didn’t even have the dynamics of a choo-choo.

Snake Robot Could Be Headed To Mars

Snake Robot Could Be Headed To MarsThe smart folks over at the SINTEF Research Institute in Norway as well as at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology are currently working to send a new kind of exploration robot to Mars. Aksel Transeth, who happens to be a senior research scientist at SINTEF, have teamed up with some of his colleagues, and they are conducting a feasibility study for the European Space Agency, with the intention of using a snake robot to examine more of the red planet.

Transeth mentioned, “We started the study back in June and will finish sometime in December. The study is more like a written report than it is a series of experiments. However, the ideas on paper could make its way into a prototype within a few months.” Basically, the whole idea of making snake-like robots on earth to be more efficient is to help out in search and rescue missions, and who knows, it might actually prove itself to be of some value in Mars as it goes around nooks and crannies, gleaning additional information on how Mars has changed over the years as a planet. Needless to say, such efforts are still in its infancy, and there is plenty more work left to do.

Linkin Park Releases “A Light That Never Comes” Single On Xbox Music

Linkin Park Releases “A Light That Never Comes” Single On Xbox MusicIt was just last week when Microsoft decided to roll out both iOS and Android apps for Xbox Music, a move which many see as a major expansion of its service. Well, it certainly did not take too long before a famous name is dropped – with rock band Linkin Park leading the way, having debuted their latest single that is called “A Light that Never Comes” on Xbox Music. It does seem to be the only place which folks are able to listen to it legally for the coming two weeks though.

According to Mike Shinoda, the lead rapper and co-vocalist of Linkin Park, the band’s relationship with Microsoft began when Halo tournaments were held on the original Xbox, before this relationship developed further as the team worked to develop a music making application known as Stagelight, where that included support for touchscreens on Windows 8. Shonida expanded, “In working on Stagelight, I was introduced to Microsoft in a way that was surprising and intriguing. With new Windows devices that come with touchscreens, I saw a potential for the future of music writing, recording, and mixing–I envisioned these computers as the hub of the studio environment, augmenting or replacing the classic mixing consoles that currently eat up the studio space. As we met various people at Microsoft, I was inspired by the passion and creativity behind their innovations.” [Press Release]

    Tokyoflash Kisai Maru Wooden Timepiece

Tokyoflash Kisai Maru Wooden TimepieceNormally, when it comes to timepieces, most of us would eventually arrive at a point in our lives where we splurge a wee bit of dough that will certainly go some way in making ourselves look good in front of the mirror. In such cases, the watch would be made out of stainless steel and other precious metals, with those who have deeper pockets featuring precious gems embedded within to boot. Having said that, Tokyoflash has churned out weird looking timepieces in the past that does require a fair amount of brain power in deciphering the current time. Their latest effort arrives in the form of the Maru, which happens to look a whole lot more natural.

Bear in mind that the inner facing-hand would still let you know what hour it is, while the outward pointing-hand is associated with the current minute. The Maru will not be powered by termites running on a treadmill within, but will instead continue to rely on a standard battery. While it might feature a wooden band and case, there are still metal bits and pieces within. Those who are interested can pick up the Tokyoflash Maru for $99 a pop, which is a promotional price for the next couple of days. [Product Page]

Bowers & Wilkins launches the P7, its first pair of over-ear headphones

    DNP B&W P7 headphones

We’ve seen on-ear and in-ear headphones come out of Bowers & Wilkins’ labs for quite some time, but now the company has announced its first over-ear pair. The new P7s boast the style’s natural advantages, of course — ear-covering cushions that mold to the wearer’s head, improving noise isolation. B&W crafted new audio drivers for the cans too, which it claims are designed more like “traditional audiophile speaker” than a pair of premium headphones. The device’s leather and metal finish looks sleek, but it doesn’t come cheap — a pair will set you back $400 when it comes out this September. Too rich for your blood? Well, you can always opt for one of B&W’s relatively more affordable options.
