iPhone 5C glimpsed in blue and other colors, doesn’t look awful

iPhone 5C glimpsed in blue and pink, actually looks quite premium

Our previous look at a tangled pile of iPhone 5C’s wasn’t especially flattering, and it only showed the plain white version of the rumored handset. The newer image above is impossible to authenticate, but it’s a tad more sympathetic and it comes from a batch of photos of yellow, pink and blue plastic iPhones (or perhaps knock-offs) that briefly appeared on Chinese site iapps.im before being deleted at the request of a “relevant party.” Although there are definitely some echoes of Nokia’s Lumia 620 here, the close-up shot of the blue model suggests we may be looking at something a bit thinner, with slightly less rounded edges, and with a non-removable unibody that may also have a more serious matte finish — although the translucent packaging makes it hard to be sure. Go ahead and squint at the other photos after the break.

Famous U.S. Animals To Honor On Labor Day

From Vetstreet’s Melanie Kramer and Shayna Meliker:

This Labor Day, not only do we want to pay homage to the hardworking humans of America, but we also want to celebrate some of the hardest-working animals throughout history.

Take a moment of your holiday to read about these seven horses and dogs who we’re honoring for their important contributions to America. You may have heard the tales of the mail-carrying Pony Express horses or Balto, the brave Siberian Husky who delivered medicine to an Alaska town in dire need of it, but there’s so much more to learn about other hardworking canines and equines.

9 Ways We’re Better Off Now Than We Were On The First Labor Day (And 5 Ways We’re Not)

In 1894, when Congress created the holiday now known as Labor Day, the world was a different place — indeed, many states were still just baby territories back then.

But things were especially different for the workers, many of whom often struggled in dangerous conditions for little pay. So just how are things different today?

In 1894…

LG has unveiled one of the most interesting looking TVs I’ve seen a long time at IFA 2013. The TV is a 55-inch OLED set called the Gallery OLED TV 55EA8800. This TV certainly isn’t the first OLED set we’ve seen from LG, but it is the first to have the cool picture frame design. […]

11 Authors Who Kept Their Day Jobs

Happy Labor Day! You’re probably in your PJs, with “Orange is the New Black” open in another tab. We respect that – you deserve it! Sadly, not everyone is as capable of relishing off-time. As if the path to authorial fame weren’t rocky enough, these 11 authors kept their day jobs even after their work was recognized. Some needed the financial support, but others were simply passionate about their chosen fields, be it medicine, education, or their own publishing pursuits. Kudos to them! Now if you’ll excuse us, we have some napping to do.

Virginia Woolf

She may have been able to afford a room of her own, but she didn’t live leisurely. Along with her husband, Leonard Woolf, Virginia founded publishing house Hogarth Press. The pair published Russian translations, psychoanalytic works, and “The Waste Land” by T.S. Eliot.

Politicians Jockey For The Spotlight At 2013 West Indian Day Parade

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — For a few short hours on Labor Day morning, the toughest job in New York just might belong to Bill Howard.

That’s because Howard, the 70-year-old vice president of the West Indian Day Carnival Association (WIADCA), will again be the host for the VIP breakfast before the city’s annual West Indian American Day Parade. Like in past elections, politicians running for citywide or Brooklyn office are expected to attend the major event — and all of them will be asking Howard for a helping hand in getting a reception among the influential crowd of 500.

The West Indian Day Parade is a cultural institution in New York, when millions turn out along Eastern Parkway to see the steel pan bands, the feathered dancers and the floats blasting reggae, calypso and soca music. The breakfast attendees include influential Caribbean-Americans, including businesspeople, heads of Caribbean cultural organizations and church leaders. It’s a valuable speaking opportunity for politicians.

Yosemite Wildfire: Favorable Weather Helps Crews Make Progress As Blaze Grows

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — Favorable weather is helping crews make advances against a wildfire burning in and around Yosemite National Park, a wild land blaze that has expanded to become the fourth-largest in modern California history,

Clouds and higher humidity slowed flames from advancing through brush and trees, giving firefighters room to set backfires, dig containment lines and to strengthen lines around threatened communities, fire spokesman Trevor Augustino said.

The 2-week-old Rim Fire moved up a spot on the state’s list of large wildfires dating back to 1932 when it grew to 351 square miles — an area larger than the cities of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose combined, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Daniel Berlant said.
