How Does Google Really Feel about Microsoft?

This article was written on February 04, 2008 by CyberNet.

If there was ever any question about whether or not Google liked Microsoft, we now know for certain that they don’t. Google actually wrote-up a Press Release to talk about Microsoft’s offer to acquire Yahoo for $44.6 billion. Here are some of the key words and phrases I picked out of the announcement that give us an idea of how they feel about Microsoft’s proposal:

  • hostile bid
  • troubling
  • inappropriate and illegal influence
  • monopolies
  • unfair practices
  • unfairly limit

Google does not like this offer one bit and it is obvious why. They even point out that both Microsoft and Yahoo have an “overwhelming share of instant messaging and web email accounts” which they do. On the other hand though, if you take a look at search market share, a combined Yahoo and Microsoft would get about 33% of the share while Google has 60%. In some areas Google dominates, but in others they wouldn’t.

google microsoft fight

Now that Microsoft put their offer on the table, other companies (like News Corp.) and financial institutions may come with an offer as well. An article in the Wall Street Journal points out how even Google wants to “Help Yahoo Fight Off Microsoft.” Their offer is to form some type of alliance which would be an alternative to “giving in to Microsoft.” Can you imagine the scrutiny Google would face if they did in fact form an alliance with Yahoo? Then we’d see Microsoft throwing their arms up and screaming “Monopoly” as Google just did with Microsoft’s offer.

Over at Yahoo headquarters, a memo to employees said: “We want to emphasize that absolutely no decisions have been made — and, despite what some people have tried to suggest, there’s certainly no integration process underway.” All we know is that Yahoo has some big decisions ahead of them which will ultimately affect their future. Any thoughts on which route they should take?

iPhone 5S Moniker ‘Confirmed’ On Japanese Carrier’s Website

iPhone 5S Moniker Confirmed On Japanese Carriers Website

There have been a lot of rumors about Apple’s upcoming smartphones. Even if the company doesn’t announce the much rumored budget iPhone, it is definitely going to launch the successor to the iPhone 5. Ever since it released iPhone 3GS after the iPhone 3G, the company has released a smartphone with minor changes and the “S” label every other year. Since it launched the iPhone 5 last year, there has been a lot of speculation that the upcoming smartphone will be called iPhone 5S. The moniker for Apple’s upcoming smartphone has apparently been “confirmed” by Japanese carrier KDDI. It was found hiding in plain sight inside the source code of the carrier’s official website.

KDDI has since removed it, but screenshots have already circulated online. It wouldn’t be impossible to believe that the carrier is getting the website ready in time for the impending launch. This slip-us doesn’t reveal anything significant about the device after all, considering that it has always been widely believed that the iPhone Apple will release this year will be called iPhone 5S. The company is rumored to hold an event on September 10th where it will formally announce both the iPhone 5S as well as the iPhone 5C. [Image via BGR]

Several Top HTC Designers Arrested Over Allegations Of Fraud And Stealing Trade Secrets

Several Top HTC Designers Arrested Over Allegations Of Fraud And Stealing Trade Secrets

A bit of drama has unfolded over at HTC. Several top designers of the company based in Taiwan were arrested after they were suspected to have made fraudulent expense claims and stolen trade secrets. The designers were leaving HTC to set up a new mobile design company in mainland China as well as Taiwan. Five people were taken into custody and interrogated, Vice President of Product Design Thomas Chien, R&D director Wu Chien Hung and senior manager of the design team Justin Huang, who sketched out the design for HTC One, were among those who were arrested, their offices were also raided during the investigation. Thomas Chien and Wu Chien Hung have been kept in custody while the others have been released on bail.

HTC chairwoman Cher Wang reportedly filed a complaint personally with the Taiwan Investigation Bureau. In it’s investigation the Bureau found that Chien, Wu and Huang were setting up a new mobile design company, registered already as Xiaoyu, and that they would have resigned after receiving mid-year bonuses from HTC. The company reportedly discovered that Thomas Chien had downloaded Sense 6.0 design files and sent them to external contacts over email. All three of them are also accused of falsely billing HTC for over US$334,000 in commission fees for an external design firm, while the design for HTC One was done in-house. They are accused of splitting the money between themselves. HTC has said in a statement that it expects all employees to “observe and practice the highest levels of integrity and ethics.” It is refraining from making any further comments as relevant authorities are in the process of conducting investigations.

Reuters: Verizon’s $130 billion bid for Vodafone stake to be voted on this weekend

Vodafone and Verizon might finally be “resolving” their business relationship, according to Reuters: the pair are said to be striking a deal this weekend. The typical folks “familiar with the matter,” say that the firms’ respective boards are voting on a $130 billion buyout that would put Vodafone’s 45 percent stake in the network back in Verizon’s hands. The price has gone up since we last heard about this deal, though the plan is essentially the same — Verizon will finance half of the purchase through bonds and bank loans while covering the rest with cash on hand. Neither Verizon or Vodafone were willing to comment on the report, Reuters stated, but it’s no secret that the two companies have mused over breaking their partnership in the past. We’ll let you know if we hear anything official; until then, check out the source link to get the story from the horse’s mouth.

Update: The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the deal has been finalized behind closed doors, reiterating that an official announcement could come as early as Monday.

Feeding Digital Images Through This Mirror Will Warp Your Mind

Feeding Digital Images Through This Mirror Will Warp Your Mind

There’s a lot of lore about what we see in mirrors, or what happens if we go through the looking glass. And this vaguely sinister app offers some control of the situation. Unsigned Mirror is an openFrameworks Windows and Mac app written by the art and technology group Unsigned Long Long. It creates slit-scan craziness when you drag an image into the program and feed it through the "mirror". You can also use your webcam for source images. While putting an image through the mirror, you can rotate the scene in 3d and then save as a new image file. Sort of makes you want to bring the word "groovy" back, doesn’t it? I said sort of. Facebook Trending Topics Box Appears For Some U.S. Users

Soon after enabling hashtags, which were undoubtedly made popular on the internet by Twitter, Facebook announced that it will soon start testing trending topics. At first the test was being conducted on a very small scale, trending topics were only available to U.S. users and that too through the Facebook mobile website. It has now rolled out the trending topics box on the main website’s homepage News Feed “to a small percentage of U.S. users.”

A Facebook spokeswoman has said that the feature is currently in early stages of development, adding that the social network will disclose more details if it plans on rolling out the feature to more users. As of now the trending topics box appears on the upper right hand corner on the main website, putting topics that are generating buzz across Facebook upfront, thus allowing users to easily know what’s trending at a glance. Clicking on a particular topic will reveal what a user’s friends and the general public is saying about it, the topic may relate to personalities or different subject matters. Trending topics make it quite easy for users to join in conversations taking place at a global scale, the results are evident on Twitter. Will they be able to command a similar following on Facebook? Lets wait and see. [Image via CNET]
