Motorola Opens Shop In Waterloo, Could Be Interested In BlackBerry Staff

Motorola Opens Shop In Waterloo, Could Be Interested In BlackBerry StaffJust the other day we reported on some unfortunate news on how BlackBerry had announced an operating loss of about $1 billion, and in the process would be axing some jobs in a bid to save money. So what will happen to these unfortunate staff at BlackBerry? Where will they go to next? Well Motorola might be a possibility, especially since Google had recently confirmed that the company would be opening up shop in Waterloo, Canada, leading some to speculate that this could be a sign that Google and Motorola are interested in picking up some of BlackBerry’s staff who might have been laid off as a result of the huge loss.

Of course this isn’t confirmed since we doubt Google will be sharing their hiring practices with the public anytime soon, but even if it weren’t true, the proximity could spell new job opportunities for the BlackBerry staff who might have recently lost their jobs. What do you guys think? Will Motorola and Google be able to benefit from the experience and knowledge of former BlackBerry personnel? Or do you think that them opening up shop just next door is just a coincidence?

Fifth-gen iPad Smart Covers Shown Off On Video

Just the other day photos of a space grey fifth-gen iPad surfaced and given that Apple has been rumored to launch the new iPad and iPad mini 2 come October, we guess the frequency of the leaks aren’t surprising. In any case a new video has made its way online, courtesy of Unbox Therapy where they show off the new Smart Covers that have been designed specifically for the fifth-gen iPad. The video shows off the Smart Covers in a variety of different colors and shows that it has been designed specifically to fit the new iPad 5, or whatever Apple plans on calling it.

The fifth-gen iPad is expected to keep the same display size as its predecessors, but at the same time will be taking design cues from the iPad mini, such as making itself thinner and keeping the bezels of the display narrower. Ultimately what this means for would-be iPad customers is that they get to enjoy the iPad’s larger display, but in a small and thinner body, which we can only imagine is a good thing. In any case we’re still keeping our eyes and ears peeled for an invite by Apple for its rumored October event, but in the meantime you can check out the video above if you’d like to see what the new iPad Smart Covers look like.

Conversion Kit Turns Your iPhone into GTA V's iFruit Device

In GTA V – which may well be one of the best-selling PS3/360 games of the decade – much of the game’s menu is accessed through the iFruit phone, an in-game parody of the Apple iPhone. Someone apparently thought it might be fun to own their own iFruit. You can too, if you’ve an iPhone 5 or 5S.

Apple Patent Wants To Bring Autographs To Ebooks

Apple Patent Wants To Bring Autographs To EbooksWith the creation of eBooks and its readers and apps, the need to go out to a bookstore and purchase a physical copy of a book is no longer necessary. Personally I prefer holding a physical book over a tablet any day, but that’s just personal preference. However authors are still doing book signing tours and we suppose getting a book signed is less expensive than having your tablet signed, right? Well it seems that Apple might have thought about that and a patent discovered by Apple Insider has revealed that the Cupertino company might have thought up a solution to that.

The patent describes a method in which an author of a book, or an artist of an music album, or even a movie star, can autograph a digital copy of their works for a fan. One of the examples of the patent suggests that future eBooks come with an autograph page, or a specific location within the eBook that the author can sign. The author must then have a device on them that authorizes them to sign the user’s copy of the eBook and this can be done through either Bluetooth or WiFi, and requires the author be close-by, i.e. book signing tours. The patent also talks about remote signings where the autograph is then encrypted and then sent to a specific device.

It’s an interesting idea, albeit a bit novel, but what do you guys think? Could this be the way book signing tours are conducted in the future?

Xbox Fitness official, brings famous trainers, personalized feedback to living room workouts

DNP Microsoft accidentally leaks Xbox One's fitness service, blames lack of spotter

Microsoft’s initial Kinect sensor might not have been awesome for first-person shooters, but it rocked for fitness games. Redmond is taking this one step further for its next-gen console with Xbox Fitness, a subscription-based service for the Xbox One. Xbox Fitness promises “instant, personalized feedback” on heart rate and form (thanks to the new Kinect’s innards), and celebrity trainers include Jillian Michaels and Tony Horton. It’s bringing P90X and Insanity workouts, too. The service will be free until December 2014 — with Xbox Live Gold, of course — but after that, Microsoft could be locking it behind two paywalls, according to a leaked test-page spotted by NeoGAF’s ever-vigilant community. We’ve reached out to the company for confirmation on pricing and will update this post if we hear back. In the meantime remember: Shut up, focus and do the work.

Federal Funds For Detroit Announced, Broke City To Receive $100 Million In Grants

DETROIT — The U.S. government directed more than $100 million in grants Thursday to help bankrupt Detroit tear down vacant buildings and spur job growth, but the help falls far short of the wider bailout some city leaders had sought.

Gene Sperling, chief economic adviser to President Barack Obama, said the administration scrounged through the federal budget and found untapped money that “either had not flowed or had not gotten out or not directed to the top priorities for Detroit.”

Stir Kinetic Desk Could Be Beneficial For Your Health

Stir Kinetic Desk Could Be Beneficial For Your HealthSitting down for extended periods of time is not good for health, as studies have shown, which is why there are offices in the world who have introduced standing desks. For those unfamiliar, a standing desk is a table that is set at a certain height in which standing is required if you wish to work on it, reportedly giving you better posture at the same time. In any case if you’re a fan of the standing desk and would love if it were a little more hi-tech, former iPod engineer, JP Labrosse, has announced his company’s newest product, the Stir Kinetic Desk.

Basically this desk has two modes, one for those who like sitting, and one for those who prefer standing. A touchscreen has been built into the corner of the table and tapping it twice will activate the desk, allowing it to rise to a standing position. It even comes with a built-in thermal sensor to detect when you have approached the desk. Eventually over time the desk will learn your habits and will know when you’ve had enough of standing and want to take a break. There’s also a WhisperBreath feature which makes the desk rise up and down gently as a reminder that you’ve been there too long and should probably go walk around.

Sounds pretty awesome, huh? The design of the desk itself is pretty minimalist so if a clean and sleek look is your thing, this might appeal to you. The Stir Kinetic Desk is expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2014 and will be priced at $3,890. More information about the desk can be found on its website.
