Facebook Now Allows Posts To Be Edited After They’ve Been Shared

Facebook Now Allows Posts To Be Edited After Theyve Been Shared

Starting today, Facebook will allow its more than 1 billion users to edit a post’s text after it has been published. The feature is going to roll out today on Android and the web. It will be available through iOS soon as well. Previously, there was no way to edit a post’s text after it had been published. If users had to make a change, they had to delete the post and then publish another one. This had a downside. Any likes, comments or shares garnered by the first post would be lost. Having the ability to change text without losing interaction is definitely going to be welcomed by users.

The world’s largest social network already offers a similar feature for comments. Back in 2012, it started allowing users to edit comments after they had published them on a post. Similar to how it works on comments, Facebook will display an edit history for a post that has been edited, so that everyone can see if there are any changes to the text. This way, people won’t trick one another by changing the text to say something else while they’ve racked up interaction when the post said an entirely different thing. The feature is going to be rolled out from today, it might take some time to go live for everyone.

    Twitter Launches Emergency Alerts

TwitterOn Wednesday the social media giant Twitter, launched “Twitter Alerts”. When news breaks about a safety concern or a weather related emergency, a Twitter Alert will pop up in your feed from the appropriate organization handling the information during the emergency.

The Twitter Alerts program is available to any organization that will be providing the critical information to the public; these organizations can be local, national or international. Currently, Twitter has more than 100 government agencies that are enrolled in this program. If you believe your agency should be enrolled in the program, fill out their enrollment form.

Believe it or not, Twitter has already proven to come in handy during times of disaster. FEMA used Twitter as a way to communicate critical information for those in the path of Hurricane Sandy. And the Boston Police Department used Twitter to correct any misinformation that the media report and also used it to keep the people of Boston up-to-date during the citywide manhunt for the bombers.

For most people, checking their social media sites first thing in the morning is almost as important as that first cup of coffee. Be sure to check out the list of organizations already signed up for Twitter Alerts and follow those that are close to you so you can always be in the know.

VLC Version 2.1 Brings 4K Support

VLC Version 2.1 Brings 4K Support

VLC is a popular open source media playback application. It is primarily known for the fact that it supports a plethora of file formats. VideoLAN, the folks behind VLC, have release a new VLC 2.1 “Rincewind” update today which is a major new version of this popular media player. It brings a number of new features and improvements. Notably, VLC version 2.1 brings support for 4K video playback, so if you have a 4K quality media file and a display capable of handling the resolution, you can now use VLC to play back that particular file.

The update also improves audio support as there’s a new rendering pipeline for audio with better efficiency, volume and device management. It comes with fixes more nearly 1,000 bugs. The Android port of VLC now supports greater number of devices than it previously used to, same goes for the official iOS port. There’s also a partial port available for Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. For mobile ports, there are new audio, video outputs and interfaces. 4K resolution videos aren’t exactly common right now, so they’re definitely hear to stay. 4K compatible displays and televisions, though relatively expensive right now, are slowly but surely making their way into users’ lives. Good on VideoLAN for making VLC future-proof.

Does This Buckling Bridge Hint at Larger US Infrastructural Woes?

Does This Buckling Bridge Hint at Larger US Infrastructural Woes?

Green Bay drivers were treated to an unwelcome surprise yesterday, when the discovery of a dramatically sagging pier on the heavily trafficked Leo Frigo bridge (named after a cheese magnate, because Wisconsin) forced its indefinite closure. The incident coincided with a new AP report about the deteriorating state of American bridges, which seems like a perennial source of national hysteria these days. But we shouldn’t regress to river-fording just yet.

    Endless Stair Sculpture: Escher IRL

The Endless Stair makes it seem like you’re stepping into an Escher painting: it never ends. The temporary sculpture was a project of dRMM Architects, where they basically combined fifteen interlocking stairways to create the 25-foot-tall sculpture.

If you’re still thinking M. C. Escher, then you’re right on target, because the piece was inspired by the well-known Dutch artist.

dRMM’s Alex de Rijke explains: “Escher’s inspiration was something that drove us to make a staircase that was not possible necessarily to understand as a simple linear composition. It’s something that was complex, that was interlocking, and perhaps spatially impossible.”

He adds: “On stairs, people interact, they pass each other, they are always interesting places with spatial and social potential. We thought a staircase would be a good vehicle for exploring structure, space, and making a sculpture. Stairs are sculpture’s gift to architecture.”

The Endless Stair is currently on display in front of London’s Tate Modern, where visitors can walk up and down it’s intertwined steps daily from 9 in the morning until dusk.

Deals: Really Cheap Sony 7.1 Receiver, Nikon S1, Shiatsu Massage Chair

If you want a good A/V receiver for very, very little, today is your lucky day. Newegg has this Sony 7.1ch 3D Receiver marked all the way down to $120 on their eBay storefront, which I’m pretty sure is the lowest price we’ve ever seen on a 7.1ch. Sure it’s manufacturer refurb., but you’re saving a lot here compared to a new model, and you don’t need features like 4K. Comes with a warranty and ships free. [eBay]
