This is where Ctrl+Alt+Del came from

Bill Gates regrets it, Windows users generally hate it, and its become computing shorthand for hitting reset on a bad idea, but Ctrl+Alt+Del wasn’t always a bad idea. The much-maligned key combo came in for some criticism by the former Microsoft CEO at an interview this week, with Gates questioning “Who’s idea was that?” and […]

Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake Do It Again

jfjtWhen hashtags are used the right way, they are a great tool for quickly finding information on Twitter and Facebook. Jimmy and Justin show you exactly how stupid people look when they use hashtags other than a means to get information out to your followers. Even though it is a personal favorite in this video, I would never look up “#thatshowwedo”.

Former SpaceX director Marco Villa joins Hyperloop development team

DNP Former SpaceX director Marco Villa joins Hyperloop team

When it was unveiled a few weeks ago, Elon Musk’s Hyperloop project sounded almost too good to be true. Dr. Marco Villa, former director of mission operations at SpaceX, was among those who didn’t get the memo from the naysayers, as he’s just joined a team set on elevating Hyperloop from fantasy to reality. The crowd-sourced startup platform JumpStartFund enabled the group’s formation after the Hyperloop plans were posted there in August; since then, a handful of talented individuals, led by Villa, received permission from Musk to work on developing the project. Joining Villa on the mission to make your high-speed travel dreams a reality is Dr. Patricia Galloway, who once served as president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (and was, notably, the first woman to hold that title). While the rail line is still a long way away from fruition, Villa seems optimistic, stating, “There does not seem to be any technical issues on this project that we can’t solve, even if we do not know right away, we will figure it out.”

This Sweet Photobooth Is Triggered By Skin-To-Skin Contact

Traditional photobooths are proven good-time machines. Striking poses for the rapid-fire quartet of pics takes a balance of strategy and spontaneity once you slip your bills in the slot. But what if the machine was set off by something else entirely? Thermobooth is a new model operated by intimacy—the shutter goes off when skin-to-skin contact is made.

Possible iPad 5 Smart Covers shown off in video

(Credit: Unbox Therapy)

On top of already numerous leaks about Apple’s next iPads is a new video depicting what appear to be updated versions of the company’s Smart Cover accessory.

This is the magnetic cover that plays double duty as a screen protector and foldable stand for iPads. Apple introduced the $39 accessory alongside the iPad 2 back in 2011, and the product has remained largely the same since the iPad form factor hasn’t changed either.

That’s not expected to be the case with the fifth-generation iPad, which several leaks have suggested will take on a look similar to that of the iPad Mini, with slimmer sides and more tightly angled edges. That narrower front will require new Smart Covers, which Unbox Therapy showed off in a video on Thursday.

Robot Picks Ripe Strawberries

Robot Picks Ripe StrawberriesSo we have a smart rifle that will do all the aiming and targeting on your behalf, and here we are with a smart robot whose sole purpose of existence is to pick up ripe strawberries all day long, without getting exhausted to boot. Agricultural machinery manufacturer Shibuya Seiki and the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization recently teamed up to show off this particular robot that can continue to pick ripe strawberries as the farmers take a nap. In fact, it has been touted that this particular robot will eventually reduce the amount of workload by 67%.

Just how fast does this robot go about its job? Well, it is capable of picking a piece of fruit every eight seconds thanks to the clever implementation of three cameras which will be able to determine just which strawberries are ripe for the taking. Once identified correctly, a mechanized arm will do the job by snipping it and placing said strawberry into the basket. An official of the company behind this robot remarked that it will calculate “the degree of ripeness from the color of the strawberry, which it observes with two digital cameras. It also uses the images from the two cameras to calculate the distance from the target, then approaches the strawberry it is aiming at.”

Does this mean the cost of strawberries will also drop eventually?

BBC iPlayer Downloads replaces old Desktop client for a cleaner, simpler user experience

BBC iPlayer Downloads replaces old Desktop client for a cleaner, simpler user experience

Those of you across the pond with access to BBC’s iPlayer Desktop client may have been frustrated with the offline video experience. There were frequent Adobe AIR updates that caused incompatibility issues and features that were either mostly ignored by users for their complexity (i.e., Series Record) or inaccessible offline, like Live TV and Radio. Well, consider that the past because the Beeb’s introducing a new client, BBC iPlayer Downloads, which sidesteps the need for Adobe AIR and cuts out those former features in favor of a unfussy UI focused on downloading programs. To that end, downloads will no longer be made available in .wmv format (due to cost reasons) and are now hosted only on episode pages to keep the experience consistent with companion mobile apps. Fans of the old Player will still be able to view any existing downloaded shows until their expiration date, but, from today forward, that client will no longer be available on the BBC’s iPlayer site. Embrace the future, video junkies… you have no choice.
