VorpX turns BioShock Infinite, Mirror’s Edge (and more) into Oculus Rift-ready games

VorpX turns BioShock Infinite, Mirror's Edge and more into Oculus Riftready games

Irrational Games’ blockbuster BioShock Infinite and EA DICE’s Mirror’s Edge weren’t built with the Oculus Rift in mind, but both are part of a huge list of games supported by a new piece of software available today: VorpX. The still-in-beta, $40 application promises to convert a variety of games from monitor-exclusive experiences to Oculus Rift-ready VR games, including the aforementioned two and a lengthy list of others.

As none of the supported games are meant to work with the Rift, a variety of workarounds are implemented by VorpX. Clicking in and holding down your mouse wheel, for instance, allows you to “edge peek,” which allows users to look freely at the edges of their field-of-view instead of it moving with the headset’s movement. Additionally, since rendering two distinct views of high-def, modern games is taxing, VorpX uses a workaround called “Z-buffer,” which is apparently “the highest performing” of the two available options, but not as pretty. You can also choose “Geometry 3D,” which does render two distinct feeds and, well, we’re jealous of whatever system you’ve got that’s running that smoothly. Not every game supports both modes, but a fair number do (there’s a list right here comparing both). Head below for a handful of video demonstrations of VorpX in action, as well as the full list of supported games.

HUFFPOLLSTER: Reviewing The Polling On A Government Shutdown

Pollsters are all over the potential government shutdown. Polls show “the American people” have plenty of confusion and doubt about Obamacare but are in no mood to defund it. And everyone hates Congress, now more than ever. This is HuffPollster for Monday, September 30, 2013.

GOV’T SHUTDOWN POLLING – Pollsters have turned their attention to the budget confrontation in Washington the seemingly inevitable government shutdown. Here is a summary of their findings.

Post/ABC – Scott Clement: “On the eve of a government shutdown, Americans disapprove of all players in Washington’s latest budget standoff in a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, although they save particularly ire for Republicans handling of the fight to fund the government beyond midnight. Barely one in four (26 percent) approve of congressional Republicans’ handling of budget negotiations, while 34 percent approve of Democratic counterparts and 41 percent approve of Obama. In each case, larger numbers say they “disapprove” of how Republicans, Democrats and Obama are handling things. Underscoring the disgruntled mood, 27 percent of Americans disapprove of all three. The poll shows a stronger hand for Obama than a Post-ABC poll earlier this month where similar numbers said they trust Obama (43 percent) and congressional Republicans (40 percent) to better handle negotiations over the federal budget.” [WaPost]

Huge Business Coalition Led By U.S. Chamber Of Commerce Urges Congress To Fund The Government

WASHINGTON — An unusually broad coalition of trade associations and lobbying groups, led by the powerful U.S. Chamber of Commerce, issued a letter Monday to members of Congress, urging them to fund the government and raise the nation’s debt ceiling.

Coming from groups like the U.S. Chamber, which contributed millions of dollars in 2012 to help elect Republicans to Congress, the letter was a strong rebuke to the House GOP leadership. Late Monday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) was still threatening to shut down the government unless essential provisions of the Affordable Care Act were dismantled or delayed.

The letter acknowledged the importance of reining in federal spending, a key Republican priority that some in the party have used to justify their dogmatic refusal to fund the government starting Tuesday unless Obamacare is defunded. “However, with the U.S. economy continuing to underperform, the federal government needs to maintain its normal operations pending a successful outcome of broader budgetary reforms,” the 251 groups wrote. “It is not in the best interest of the employers, employees or the American people to risk a government shutdown that will be economically disruptive and create even more uncertainties for the U.S. economy.”

Boom Brands 2013: Tumblr

n mid-May, a few days before Yahoo announced it would be acquiring Tumblr, there was a housewarming party in Greenpoint. A Tumblr employee was moving into an apartment with a friend who happened to be dating another Tumblr employee, and the overlapping social circles resulted in a room full of Tumblr people. It was Saturday night. Late the previous afternoon, a cluster of posts had appeared on tech blogs with the announcement that Yahoo’s board would be meeting on Sunday to approve a $1.1 billion offer for Tumblr, and though everyone at the party had read the posts or fielded texts from someone who had nobody had really paid attention. Rumors skittered around the office on a weekly basis. Employees always joked that it didn’t matter what kind of options you had because Tumblr was never going to sell.

NASA’s fluorescent plane glows with the research flow

(Credit: NASA Langley/Preston Martin)

Build a tiny plane, cover it in fluorescent oil, and use the results to improve the design of future air-based transport.

That’s what researchers at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., hope to achieve with a toy-size model of a hybrid plane. The image above shows a 5.8 percent scale model of a futuristic hybrid wing body, coated in fluorescent oil before being blasted with air.

The team sent the hybrid plane through a 14×22-foot subsonic wind tunnel to “see” and document the patterns of air flowing over and around the model.

While a vast amount of data can be recorded by viewing the movement of a plane with the naked eye, using oil helps researchers view minute details and tweak designs with more precision. By documenting lift and drag in this manner, NASA hopes to improve the aerodynamics of future planes.

The space agency has been pushing research to improve flig… [Read more]
