Nexus 5 could be the new Android phone to beat

The new Nexus is shaping up to be an Android phone worth waiting for.

It still isn’t quite official just yet, but a growing Great Lake of leaks points to a powerful new Nexus 5 that will hold its own against the iPhone 5S and other top Android phones.

A few leaked benchmark tests have the Nexus 5 scoring at the head of the class in graphics performance. The Nexus 5 is expected to pack an Adreno 330 GPU, and according to GFXBench’s data (as parsed by Phone Arena), it should perform on par with the GPU in the new iPhone 5S. It also outperforms the Sony Xperia Z1 and, perhaps most interestingly, the LG G2, which the Nexus 5 is rumored to be based on.

The test data is, of course, incomplete and unconfirmed, but it appears to at least show that the Nexus 5 will be capable of holding its own when it comes to gaming and that LG and Google don’t seem to be skimping on specs for their next Android reference device.

An Apple employee is never supposed to point when giving directions in their store. For example, when asked where the iPhone cases are sold, a specialist should either gesture with an open hand or, preferably, walk the customer to the proper location.

Wristwatch Shaped Post-it Notes Remind You It’s Time to Do Stuff

I’m a rather forgetful person. If it’s not written down the chances of me remembering to do it are pretty slim. That means I have a bunch of Post-it notes stuck all around my office to remind me of things that I have to do. The problem is if I’m not in the office to look at those Post-it sticky notes, I still forget.

    wristwatch post its 620x438magnify

That’s where these PA-Design’s wristwatch Post-it notes would come in. These things have sticky ends and you can write your own notes on the watch shaped paper. You can then wrap it around your wrist and stick the ends together so you have the reminder with you wherever you go.

These things are quite a bit more expensive than your normal pad of Post-it notes about $13(USD) per pack of 100 notes. The pad measures 8.25 x 1.5 x 0.4-inches. The only downside to these is that they appear to be out of stock on Amazon right now – though it looks like can still order them direct from PA-Design here.

This Smart Desk Will Track the Calories You Burn By Simply Standing Up

By now we’ve all likely heard the deafening buzz proclaiming that sitting is the new smoking; sitting is ruining our bodies and irreparably hunching our backs; sitting is going to be the death of us all, damnit. But are you ready to give up the passive, sedentary pseudo-comfort of a long day spent in a chair? Can you commit to a standing workstation?

Stir’s Kinetic Desk is a standing desk that learns your sitting habits, moves when you need a break (video)

If Apple were to build a desk, it would look like this. Much like Nest, maker of the world’s sexiest thermostat, Stir is a company founded by someone who worked on the first iPods, and, it too is trying to make a mundane household item fashionable. In this case, of course, the product in question isn’t a thermostat or even a home appliance, but a standing desk. The Kinetic Desk, which will ship in the first half of 2014, has a thermal sensor that can tell when you’ve arrived, and over time, it learns how long you prefer to be on your feet before taking a break. To lower the desk over its 26-inch range, just double-tap the built-in touchscreen, located on the left end. From there, you can can set goals, like standing for 25 percent of the day, as well as see how many extra calories you’ve burned, or monitor how much time you’ve spent sitting. CEO and founder JP Labrosse tells us that the desk might eventually integrate with fitness-tracking services like Fitbit, though it won’t at launch. Still, the desk has WiFi and Bluetooth radios baked in, so if Stir ever did want to share data with third-party services, the hardware would at least be able to support it.

Like an iPod, the Kinetic Desk has just one button. Press it and you’ll be telling the desk to enter “active mode,” which will remind you to take periodic breaks by rising up and down ever so gently when it’s time for you to stop what you’re doing and walk around. (It’s less distracting then it sounds; in fact, Stir is using the name “WhisperBreath” to describe it.) Also like an Apple product, the desk has a stark design: it’s powered by a single cable, with eight AC ports and four USB sockets tucked into two hidden panels at the top of the desk. That makes for a minimalist look, of course, but it also means you don’t have to worry about dragging cables (and knocking things over) when you adjust the height of the desk. Once this starts shipping, you’ll have two color options for the lacquered wood surface, and four choices of accent colors for the underside and in the two charging drawers. As for the starting price, you’re looking at $3,890 and up — suffice to say, you’d better already be a standing desk convert before taking the plunge.%Gallery-slideshow98401%%Gallery-slideshow90897%

Sony’s new 4K, HD projectors unveiled with prices all the way up to $28,000

Sony's new 4K, HD projectors unveiled with prices all the way up to $28,000

Here at CEDIA 2013, Sony has just announced three new SXRD projectors, including two 4K models and one for the 1080p crowd. If you must have the highest res video output, only the new VPL-VW1100ES and VPL-VW600ES will do, with both tossing a DCI-approved 4,096 x 2,160 pixel count at the nearest display surface. The VPL-VW1100ES (pictured above) updates the VPL-VW1000ES introduced two years ago and remains at the top of Sony’s projector line, bringing a bundled 4K player for a tidy $28,000. The VPL-VW600ES arrives with similar specs to the model introduced in Europe last month, offering that high pixel count with lower brightness and contrast levels in a smaller frame. As a result its $15,000 pricetag is lower too, although an option to bundle the FMP-X1 4K player and tablet controller will add an extra grand on top of that. The old VPL-VW1000ES is getting some love to, with a “premium service activation” program that brings HDMI 2.0, the new media player, a Sony tablet and a replacement lamp.

If your display space or budget aren’t 4K ready yet the VPL-HW55ES continues Sony’s 1080p line with “enhanced optical efficiency” and an improved cooling system that should make the lamp last longer, all for a price of $4,000. All three projectors are going on sale through custom installers, with the VPL-HW55ES due in October and the VPL-VW600ES in November. If you’re looking to upgrade the VPL-VW1000ES however, you’re encouraged to check back in October to set up that service appointment. Check after the break for the complete specs, and check out the gallery for an in-person look.%Gallery-slideshow98634%

DNP Maxthon updates iOS browser with 'shakeandsend' cloud push and more

It’s been a long while since Maxthon updated its iOS app, and hot on the heels of iOS 7, it finally has. Not only does it offer the usual speed and performance enhancements, the latest update to the mobile browser also reveals easier access to social media, a unique “shake-and-send” feature that lets you send content to the cloud by shaking the phone, localization in 15 more languages and a new “Push Away Menu” that supposedly helps you navigate the web one-handed. Seeing as Safari didn’t get a ton of updates with iOS 7, it might prove useful to hit the source and seek out a possible alternative.
