Apple sold 33.8 million iPhones, 14.1 million iPads, and 4.6 million Macs in the last three months, on the way to earnings $7.5 billion of pure profit. Both revenue and earnings were down from the same quarter last year but… uh… yeah. That is still a huge chunk of dough.

Apple Sold 33.8 Million iPhones, 14.1 Million iPads, And 4.6 Million Macs In Q4 2013

iphoneapple

Well folks, Apple has just put up some mixed numbers in its fiscal Q4 2013 earnings release – $37.5 billion in revenue and $7.5 billion in net profit to be exact – but how exactly did the tech titan fare in terms of hardware sales?

This time around Apple sold 33.8 million iPhones (which it notes is a record for Q4), 14.1 million iPads and 4.6 million Macs during the quarter.

To put that in perspective, the average analyst prediction was for Apple to sell a grand total of 33.4 million iPhones in Q4, along with just under 14 million iPads and about 4.26 million Mac computers. Meanwhile, Apple sold 31 million iPhones, 14.6 million iPads, and 3.8 million Macs last quarter, and 26.9 million iPhones, 14 million iPads, and 4.9 million Macs in the year-ago quarter.

Phew.

So yes, if we’re taking those averages as gospel, Apple managed to come out ahead on every one of them. Despite that big iPhone sales boost (thanks in part to the recent launch of the iPhones 5s and 5c, iPad sales are essentially flat year-over-year – we’ll see if that trend sticks once those refreshed models start hitting shelves in November. The nature of the electronics lifecycle means that a cyclical dip or lull is to be expected though – with the holidays right around the corner, the company’s Q1 2014 earnings are going to be where the real money is.

Speaking of dips, we saw a few of them last quarter: Apple sold just 14.6 million iPads back then which was heralded as the first yearly iPad sales decline ever, and (perhaps more notably) the average selling price of the iPhone dipped from $613 to $580 sequentially.

It’s not exactly a shock then to see that both of these trends are still in effect, especially when it comes to iPhone ASPs. Apple makes it a point to never break down iPhone sales numbers by model, so at this point it’s tough to say how many 5s and 5c units have been sold (a situation that’s compounded by iPhone 5s supply constraints and the frequent assertion that people aren’t really buying the 5c). While iPhone ASP is down to $577 this time, though, it seems that the popularity of the higher-priced iPhone 5s has managed to keep the figure from eroding too much.

And what of the iPods? The music players (which eventually evolved into much, much more) were one of Apple’s first runaway hits, but the company generally seems happy to relegate them to the background. They haven’t been called out in an earnings release for the past six months, and they were conspicuously absent when Apple updated the rest of its hardware portfolio just in time for the holiday shopping frenzy. In case you were curious, though, Apple moved a hair under 3.5 million of them in Q4.

This is a developing story, please refresh for updates.

Nexus 5 And Android 4.4 Being Announced Separately In Tel-Aviv On November 5th

Nexus 5 And Android 4.4 Being Announced Separately In Tel Aviv On November 5th

We’ve yet to hear from Google about the launch event of Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat. Obviously the primary event is going to take place here in the U.S., probably in California, but it appears that there’s a separate press conference planned in Tel-Aviv, Israel on November 5th. It is not immediately evident if Google is going to take part in this press conference, but LG appears to be involved. The invites show off a generic looking smartphone with a KitKat bar stuffed in it, its most likely a hint of what to expect from the press conference.

It may simply be a regional announcement of Google’s brand new smartphone built in collaboration with LG, and the internet search giant’s latest update to its mobile platform. Ronlight Digital, a distributor of LG products in Israel, confirms that the press conference is related to Android 4.4. So there’s really no guess work involved here, with regards to what can be expected from the press conference. Though it does point towards the possibility of an official announcement coming from Google prior to November 5th. Just recently it was rumored that the Nexus 5 will be announced on November 1st, Android 4.4 is going to be announced alongside the smartphone. [Image via Gadgety]

Hands on with the massive Samsung UN-85S9 85-inch 4K TV

    (Credit: Screenshot by Geoffrey Morrison/CNET)

This thing is huge. There’s just something about a TV this size that dominates a room. Even a big room. It plays tricks on the eyes, in a way, as your brain isn’t accustomed to seeing a TV of such girth.

The UN-85S9 isn’t just massive in size (85 inches, 189 pounds), but massive in price ($40,000) and resolution (Ultra HD “4K,” of course).

I got to spend some time with it, and here’s what I found out.

As you might have noticed, from the lack of “review” in the title, this isn’t a full review. We only had limited time with the TV, and it wasn’t at the CNET labs. Also, my name is not David or Ty. I did have access to a variety of equipment and test gear, though, so consider this a mostly-there-but-not-quite-full review.

BigMy “TV” at home is a projector on a 102-inch screen, and even I think this is a big TV. There’s something about the presence of a device-of-unusual-size that is impressive. The easel design for the stand, which I thought looked odd at best, weird at worst, at CES, actually sort of works. It makes the TV look even bigger, and makes it look different from your average television. That makes sense fo… [Read more]

Verizon Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Update Build VRUEMJ7 Might Roll Out Today

Verizon Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 Update Build VRUEMJ7 Might Roll Out Today

Samsung confirmed earlier today that the much awaited Android 4.3 update for U.S. variants of the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 will be rolled out starting today. Just yesterday we saw a leaked document hint at Verizon Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 release on October 28th, which is today. It appears that Verizon may indeed roll out the update later today, Samsung has already gone live with the changelog so its only a matter of time before the update is pushed out over-the-air, barring any last minute issues.

The Verizon Galaxy S4 Android 4.3 update build VRUEMJ7 is going to bump up the core OS to Android 4.3 and enable Band 4 LTE. It is also finally going to bring support for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch to the Galaxy S4. Support for Samsung KNOX is also going to be added through this update. It appears that Verizon is leading the charge this time around with regards to OS update. Sprint is expected to roll out Android 4.3 on October 30th, followed by AT&T and T-Mobile on 13th and 18th of November respectively. Though as yet, Verizon hasn’t released a confirmation that the update is indeed coming today. So just sit back and keep your fingers crossed, hopefully an OTA update notification will drop shortly.
