WarBot Uses AR to Turn Shopping into a First-Person Shooter

Shopping can turn into such a chore sometimes. It’s great and all if you have unlimited funds to spend, but shopping turns into an unending quest of deals, sales, and coupons if you’re working on a tight budget.

Augmented Pixels wanted to give shopping and bargain hunting a more enjoyable spin, though, so they came up with WarBot, which is an app that turns shopping into an action-packed first-person shooter.

What you’re supposed to do is fire up the app and point it towards an item that you’re interested in. Once the tablet recognizes the packaging, it launches an augmented reality first-person shooter game. If you win, then you get a discount on that item. If you lose, well, you’re free to try again.

Vitaliy Goncharuk, CEO of Augmented Pixels, explains: “It’s getting more and more challenging for brands to stand out from the competition to attract and keep customers’ attention and love. Augmented reality has proved to be one of the most effective ways to engage customers at the point of sale.

It’s mighty clever of them to try to do this through a game. What do you think?

Kuwait Hookah Cafes Under Fire From Islamic Conservatives For Allowing Women

KUWAIT CITY — KUWAIT CITY (AP) — One of the traditional pleasures of the Middle East — leisurely puffing on a water pipe filled with aromatic tobacco — has become ensnared in another of the region’s customs: that of Islamic conservatives decrying what they see as liberal Western decadence.

Hard-liners are denouncing some shisha cafes as a “moral menace” because they allow young men and women to mix freely.

Health Effects Of Air Pollution To Be Monitored In China As Smog Raises Safety Concerns

BEIJING, Oct 28 (Reuters) – China’s Health Ministry will set up a national network within five years to provide a way of monitoring the long-term impact of chronic air pollution on human health, state media said on Monday.

The network will gather data on PM2.5, or particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers, in different locations around the country, the report said, citing a ministry statement.

“The document noted that the absence of a long-term, systematic monitoring system has prevented the country from uncovering the link between air pollution and human health,” the report said.

The network will first cover cities where smog is most prevalent, it added.

“The evaluation will be based on the integrated and long-term analysis of PM2.5 data, weather information and cases of local residents’ diseases and deaths,” Xinhua said.

An international study published in July showed that air pollution is shortening the lives of people in northern China by about 5.5 years compared to the south, a legacy of a policy that provided free coal for heating in the north.

Air quality is of increasing concern to China’s stability-obsessed leaders, anxious to douse potential unrest as a more affluent, urban population turns against a growth-at-all-costs economic model that has besmirched much of the country’s air, water and soil.

The government has announced many plans to fight pollution over the years, but has made little apparent progress, especially in the north and northeast.

Last week, the PM2.5 index reached a reading of 1,000 in some parts of Harbin, the gritty capital of northeastern Heilongjiang province and home to some 11 million people, virtually shutting it down.

A level above 300 is considered hazardous, while the World Health Organisation recommends a daily level of no more than 20. (Reporting by Ben Blanchard; Editing by Ron Popeski)

Marco Rubio Backs Away From Own Immigration Bill Becoming Law

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) does not think the bill he helped draft and pass through the Senate should be combined with House-passed legislation, spokesman Alex Conant told TPM and Politico in stories published on Monday.

Rubio has been backing away from the bill, which he drafted with the so-called “gang of eight,” since its passage in June, saying the House should work its will instead. But House Republicans plan to take a very different approach to the one Rubio pushed through with significant bipartisan support only four months ago.

The reason, according to Conant, is that he — not wrongly — thinks the “gang of eight” bill is opposed by majority of Republicans in the House and has always favored a piecemeal approach. While the House GOP is unlikely to pass the comprehensive bill, advocates hope it can be combined in a conference committee with whatever the House passes. But Rubio doesn’t think that should happen, although he does not necessarily oppose going to conference and limiting the scope to what the House approves on its own, Conant said.
