Google WiFi Passport Launched, Provides Cheap Internet Access For Indonesians

Google WiFi Passport Launched, Provides Cheap Internet Access For IndonesiansWe have heard about how Google plans to eventually allow everyone around the world to connect to the internet, and to kick things off, Google has launched Google WiFi Passport over in Jakarta, Indonesia. This WiFi service is a result of a partnership between Google and MOGPlay where the goal is to offer up WiFi hotspots that have been scattered around the city, allowing those without data plans to connect to the internet for free or for an extremely affordable rate. Given that sometimes carriers do charge a fair bit for data, offering up a cheap alternative could be an attractive option, although the downside would be that for now, those living outside the city might not be able to access it.

The WiFi will be accessible through the WiFi Passport app and vouchers will be offered and give users 10 days of free access, after which additional vouchers can be bought. For example a 20 day voucher will cost around $2, while a 50 day voucher will go for $5 which is admittedly extremely attractive in terms of pricing. As it stands Google WiFi Passport is available only in Jakarta but there is no word if Google plans to take this program to other markets. Thailand has a similar service where local carrier, True, allows their subscribers to connect to various hotspots located throughout the country, giving them the option to hop onto a WiFi hotspot or use their mobile internet, depending on preference and coverage.

    Samsung Galaxy Round Commercial Released

Earlier in October, Samsung took the wraps off a new device dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Round, which was essentially the Galaxy Note 3 albeit with a curved display, allowing for a rather unique design with some interesting possibilities in terms of features and use. While the device has yet to make its way to the masses outside of South Korea, Samsung has since released a commercial for the upcoming device which basically highlights its uniquely curved display and shows off some of its features in the process. While admittedly the device is interesting in its own right, we’re not sure if the curved display is actually more functional rather than novel, but given that the handset is apparently a prototype-like device that will see limited production, we guess this is more like Samsung testing out curved displays in the market as opposed to releasing a full-fledged device.

As it stands the handset is estimated to cost around $1,000 in South Korea and there is no word if Samsung plans to release it worldwide. For those unfamiliar, the Galaxy Round will feature a 5.7” Super AMOLED display with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, a 2,800mAh battery and will run on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. In any case if you have a minute to spare, you can check out the Samsung Galaxy Round commercial in the video above.

New Mac Pro’s GPU Could Be User Replaceable

New Mac Pros GPU Could Be User ReplaceableApple’s new Mac Pro has yet to be released, but it is expected to make its way into the eager hands of Apple users by the end of the year. The basic model will feature dual AMD FirePro D300 GPUs, while the higher-end model will pack AMD FirePro D700 GPUs. While we have yet to find out how well these GPUs perform in real life, we’re sure there are some users out there who might not exactly be pleased with Apple’s choice of GPU and are wondering if it is possible to replace them in the event that they want to upgrade them or if they need to be taken out to be fixed. Well it turns out that the GPUs on the upcoming Mac Pro could be user-replaceable, according to a report by French website Mac4Ever.

According to the Google Translated post, “According to our information, it is possible to change the graphics card in this machine. In fact, the GPU is placed on a daughter card, it is possible to remove and thus replace. As you might expect, Apple uses a proprietary connector (as is the case for SSD array present on the rest of the range). But nothing prevents, on paper, a manufacturer decides to offer compatible models on the market.” However it should be noted that while this is possible, replacing it with a non-Apple approved part could affect product warranty, but for those who are more concerned about customizability and performance, this could be good news for you guys.

iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c Touchscreens Not As Accurate As Older Galaxy S3

iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c Touchscreens Not As Accurate As Older Galaxy S3While Apple’s iPad mini was found to have the fastest touchscreen, at least amongst tablets, and with Apple’s iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c also being twice as responsive compared to their Android competition, we’re not sure if speed matters especially given that after certain tests were conducted that it was found that both devices’ touchscreens were not as accurate compared to competing products, like the Samsung Galaxy S3. This is according to a test conducted by Finnish testing company, OptoFidelity, who found that during their testing using software and a robotic finger, that the edges of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were poor at detecting touches, a disadvantage that could affect overall typing accuracy on the devices.

For example trying to hit the letters Q, O, and P, could be harder for iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c users due to the touchscreen reportedly being less accurate, although in all fairness keyboard accuracy on iPhone devices has not exactly been a major complaint by iPhone users to date. The Samsung Galaxy S3 on the other hand was found to have near-uniform accuracy across the display, suggesting that typing accuracy on Samsung’s smartphone should in theory be more accurate. Our review of the iPhone 5s did not find much fault with the onscreen keyboard, so perhaps the lack of accuracy is made up by good predictability and autocorrection. In any case what do you guys think? Is this something you’ve noticed on your iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c prior to being informed of its inaccuracy?
