Japan Display Unveils 5.4″ 543PPI Smartphone Display

Japan Display Unveils 5.4 543PPI Smartphone DisplaySo we know that Japan Display have recently announced that they have managed to squeeze 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160) into a 12.1” tablet, giving it a pretty decent pixel density of 365PPI. While that is great for tablet users, what about smartphone users who are similarly looking for higher resolutions on their devices? As it stands, the standard for high-end smartphones these days tends to lean towards Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,020), but it seems that the folks at Japan Display have managed to do it again according to a recently published report from Asia. According to the report, it seems that Japan Display has managed to create a 5.4” smartphone display that manages to fit a resolution of 1,440×2,560 which gives it a whopping pixel density of 543PPI!

At the moment the Samsung Galaxy S4 with its 5” display offers up a pixel density of 441PPI with its Full HD resolution, while Apple’s iPhone 5s offers 326PPI. The report goes on to state that these displays might be available come late 2014 or mid 2015, so do not expect to see these display resolutions make its way into smartphones anytime soon. As for the possibility of which company will debut the technology first, word has it that Sony, one of the partners of Japan Display, will most likely get first dibs, although given that Japan Display is one of Apple’s suppliers for their screens, might we see some of that technology appear in future iPhone or iPad devices in the future as well?

Jony Ive’s Mac Pro Product RED Could Fetch $40,000-$60,000 At Charity Auction

Jony Ives Mac Pro Product RED Could Fetch $40,000 $60,000 At Charity AuctionApart from designing software and hardware at Apple, Sir Jony Ive has been pretty busy designing other gadgets too, such as earphones and cameras, although if you were looking for something a little more related to Apple that benefited charity at the same time, the new Mac Pro RED could be worth checking out. Pictured above is Apple’s upcoming Mac Pro computer which not only sports pretty radical design as far as computers are concerned, but also comes with a rather striking red finish. This is due to the computer being part of a Product RED charity fundraiser where the computer will be auctioned off by Sotheby’s who estimates that the device could fetch anywhere between $40,000-$60,000!

The Product RED Mac Pro is the result of a collaboration between Jony Ive and Marc Newson and apart from the difference in the paint job, it is unclear as to whether the hardware underneath the hood will differ from the regular black version of the Mac Pro. However just to give some perspective, the lowest-level Mac Pro will feature a 3.7 Ghz quad-core Intel Xeon E5 processor, dual AMD FirePro D300 GPUs, 12 GB of memory, and 256 GB of PCIe-based flash storage, so at the very least that’s what we might be able to expect, although forking out $40,000 for those specs does seem a little outrageous. What do you guys think? Do you prefer the black or Product RED version of the Mac Pro?

10 reasons why you should ignore tech posts that begin with ’10 reasons why’

(Credit: !0PointlessThings/YouTube Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

    1. There are rarely 10 reasons for anything. Sometimes, there are only two or three. These involve ego, need for love and conformism. But other times, there are very many. There might be 5 reasons why you should buy a Nexus 7. Or only one. Some might think there are 8 reasons why an Xbox One will get them through the holiday season. There are, though, 423 reasons why Microsoft Word will, in the end, drive you crazy.

    2. When you start out knowing you have to find 10 reasons for something, how many of those are likely to be even remotely correct? Hitting .300 as a listicle writer is harder than for your average slugger.

    3. If there was anything magical, revolutionary or even vaguely persuasive about offering 10 reasons why something, Apple’s slick marketers would have launched the iPad with “10 reasons why you should buy the iPad.” Instead, they showed the product and played some music.

    4. Look at your favorite gadget. Were there really 10 reasons why you decided to buy it? Or was it just because 10 people you know have one?

The Only Motion In This Music Video Is From Spinning CDs

Phenakistoscopes are old school machines that used illustrated discs to create animation. Kind of the round version of a flip book. And the Japanese band SOUR wanted those methods in their music video. The whole thing is pretty mesmerizing.
