Samsung extends warranties of failing Galaxy devices after Chinese TV report

Chinese state media is becoming quite the consumer advocate. Earlier this week, a bit on national TV berated Samsung over certain Galaxy S III and Note II handsets afflicted with the “sudden death” bug, as it has been called. While a firmware fix promised to cure some devices, the root cause …

Samsung Fined NT$10 Million Over Smear Campaign Against HTC

Samsung Fined NT$10 Million Over Smear Campaign Against HTCGiven that both HTC and Samsung are rivals in terms of the Android smartphone market, it is not surprising that both companies have taken swings at one another and while we can appreciate clever ads, smearing your rivals is a different story. Earlier this year Taiwan’s FTC was investigating Samsung over reports of the South Korean tech company launching smear campaigns that targeted HTC. Well the verdict is in and bad news for Samsung is that the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission has decided that Samsung is guilty and that they were found to be “in violation of fair trade rules”.

The punishment is a fine of NT$10 million which is about $340,421 when converted, a rather hefty fine but still substantially less than $1 billion in damages they were ordered to pay Apple, which has since been heavily contested. The marketing companies involved in Samsung’s smear campaign were also fined for their participation and were fined NT$3 million ($102,130) and NT$50,000 ($1,702) respectively. We’re not sure if Samsung plans to contest this ruling since by not doing so, it would make them look guilty, but for now this is the price that Samsung and their hired marketing agencies will have to pay.

YouTube Rumored To Launch Subscription-based Music Service Later This Year

YouTube Rumored To Launch Subscription based Music Service Later This YearIt would seem as though music streaming services are the rage these days, what with Apple hopping on board the bandwagon with iTunes Radio, where they join the likes to Spotify, Pandora, and Rdio just to name a few. Well it turns out that YouTube is looking to do the same as well and that they could be launching said service later this year. This is according to a report by Billboard who claims that the music streaming service will share some similarities with Spotify, but with the bonus added feature of a video component, which we guess is not surprising given that is YouTube’s core competency. Hyundai And Kia To Introduce Android-based Navigational Systems In Future Models

Hyundai And Kia To Introduce Android based Navigational Systems In Future ModelsGood news Android users, if you weren’t exactly happy that many car manufacturers had started to turn to iOS integration with their vehicles, perhaps your next car purchase could be along the lines of a Kia or a Hyundai. This is thanks to both companies announcing that future models manufactured by either car company will start to include Android-based navigation systems, although the exact specifics of such systems were not detailed yet. However given that iOS systems allow for pairing of iOS devices, as well as using Siri as a hands-free and eyes-free tool, we wouldn’t be surprised if Hyundai and Kia were to utilise Android in a similar fashion.

What is known is that these cars will be able to gain access to apps and entertainment features, although it is unclear as to whether these apps will be from Google Play, or if they will be linked to a specific app store maintained by Hyundai and Kia, where the apps will be most likely vehicle-related (after all no one really needs a fitness app to run in the background while they drive, right?). Other possible features include remote control of the car either over WiFi or a modem connection, but once again the details in that feature remain unclear at this point in time. In any case there has not been a timetable supplied as to when this Android navigational system will be implemented, so we guess we will just have to keep an eye out for it.

Addalock gives you some security in seedy places

    Addalock
Life has a very interesting way of putting you in some uncomfortable situations. Going on a fun trip at what you think is a neat resort turns out to be a seedy motel near a water park. While we can always make the best of a bad situation, sometimes it’s nice to have a little extra security. Even if you’re not at a roach motel, should your door not have the ability to lock, you’re not exactly going to get a peaceful night of sleep.

Yes there is an extra lock for just such an occasion, but sometimes that’s not enough. This is where Addalock would be rather useful. It’s a little travel lock that will install in seconds with no need for additional tools. This will work on any door that has hinges and opens inward, which is usually the case.

While it’s not the best security measure, it will give you a bit more protection against a nosy passersby. Even though it’s meant for hotels, it has a variety of uses outside of commercial spaces as well. College dorms that have very little privacy to begin with will give you a tad  more peace of mind with one of these. Staying with friends who like having an open door policy can also be a bit unnerving, and something like this would help you get a decent night of sleep. Seeing that it’s only $20, I’d say this grab-and-go item would be perfect for anyone who likes having a little extra guard during the night.
