A Global Call For Coordinating Food Security Efforts

On Wednesday, countries around the world celebrated World Food Day, a movement launched by the United Nations to end global hunger. As we move into the third decade of celebrating World Food Day and collectively pushing to alleviate hunger worldwide, we must stop to reflect on the progress to date and the even greater challenges ahead.

For decades, the global fight against hunger and poverty has been waged through an array of strategies from public investment to private innovation, from emergency aid to long-term development programs. Progress has been made, sometimes in revolutionary ways, but we have yet to solve the unacceptable problem of too many people — nearly 900 million in the world today — living without physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food.

The UK Is Building Its First Nuclear Plant in a Quarter Century

The UK Is Building Its First Nuclear Plant in a Quarter Century

The UK has set some very ambitious carbon reduction goals for itself—including the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 80 percent by 2050, but this goal is proving more challenging than anticipated. At this rate, the UK will have to go fully-carbon free by 2030. So to meet its environmental deadline, they’re building the biggest, safest—and first—nuclear power plant on the British Isles in nearly 25 years.

We’re infatuated with all things ’60s, and the AMC period drama series “Mad Men” certainly gives us a retro fix. Between the tea-length dresses and the perfectly coiffed hairstyles, we’d consider trading places with Joan Holloway, Betty Francis or Peggy Olson. But the closest we’ll ever get to traveling back in time is by dressing up as one of the TV characters for Halloween.

Need to See a Doctor? For $49, You Can See One Immediately – Online

Seeing a doctor can be a pain sometimes. It’s painful and inconvenient enough to be sick as it is. What’s even worse is having to sit at a doctor’s office for hours on end and wait for the receptionist to call your name.

Well, there’s another way to see a doctor and it’s being advertised as being the “faster” and “easier” way: you do it online.

Behind this new service is American Well. Telemedicine isn’t actually a completely new idea, but this is just one of the applications that’s making the technology more accessible for more people.

Potential patients can check in with a U.S. trained, Board-certified doctor through their iOS or Android devices. Each ten-minute video chat consultation will cost $49(USD). If the appointment takes longer that, then additional charges will apply.

Dr. Teresa Myers, who practices telemedicine, explains: “I guarantee that not a single person who practices telemedicine would say this is a replacement of traditional medicine. This is an extension of traditional model care. With telemedicine, we can appropriately triage patients to higher levels of care needed to avoid preventable negative outcomes, which includes direct and indirect costs.

Wile this technology definitely adds convenience and immediacy, it can’t be used as a substitute for in-person examinations and testing.
