Belfast’s reputation for producing stuff that’s larger than life continues with a monumental artwork that comes a century after the sinking of the Titanic.

“Wish” is a portrait of a local 6-year-old girl that has been carved into an 11-acre field close to where the Harland and Wolff shipyard, birthplace of the massive doomed ship, once stood.

It’s the work of Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada, who has been known for creating enormous portraits such as one of Barack Obama on a Barcelona beachfront.

Part of the ongoing Belfast Festival, “Wish” was inspired by a local girl whom the artist met and photographed.

New Barnes & Noble NOOK Arrives At The FCC

New Barnes & Noble NOOK Arrives At The FCCWhile the folks over at Barnes & Noble might be working to alter their Android tablet strategy, they have not quite yet forgotten about the NOOK digital bookstore alongside the hardware that will be able to read such eBooks. In fact, it has been brought to our attention that Barnes & Noble could very well roll out a new eReader in due time, not to mention the possibility of additional new tablets being in the pipeline even as you read this.

Why do we say this? Oh yeah, perhaps the appearance of a next-generation NOOK over at the FCC website might have something to do with it. While this upcoming NOOK eReader might resemble something that the company is offering at this moment, there will be at least one improvement. This improvement would be the apparent inclusion of 4GB of internal memory, which is more or less double of what one would find within a NOOK Simple Touch or NOOK Simple Touch With GlowLight. Assuming 2GB is enough space to stash around 1,000 eBooks, then doubling that amount would also see up to 2,000 eBooks stored on the new NOOK device. Needless to say, we await with bated breath for additional information on the device to be released when it becomes official.

Dell’s Project Ophelia Could Ship Soon

Dell’s Project Ophelia Could Ship SoonDell might not be the market force that it once was, but this does not mean that it is a pushover. No sir, we have received reliable information that their extremely thin client device that would fit snugly in just about any pocket, is being prepared to be shipped real soon. Also known as Project Ophelia, this particular device has been shown off by Dell since January, and it has now gone through the folks over at the FCC, which can only mean one thing – it is extremely close to a formal release in the market now.

The Dell Project Ophelia will more or less arrive with the innards that contain a highly affordable ARM-based computer that will have Google’s Android as the operating system of choice. It will not be marketed as a standalone device, but rather, will be bundled with the company’s Wyse software so that you will have to log into it before being able to control it remotely using Citrix, VMWare, or other virtualization and remote desktop solutions.

In a nutshell, when you plug the diminutive Wyse Cloud Client into your TV or monitor, hook up a mouse and/or keyboard, you are able to make use of full versions of Windows apps that in reality, are running on a remote server.

Amazon Smartphone Confirmed To Feature 3D Object Recognition

Amazon Smartphone Confirmed To Feature 3D Object RecognitionIt does seem as though the upcoming smartphone from Amazon has been confirmed to feature a real world 3D object recognition/matching service confirmed, and this particular bit of confirmation has arrived via a patent app. Additional information is leaking out at this point in time concerning the upcoming Amazon smartphone, where it also carries the codename “Smith”. As for the vaunted an image recognition feature/service, it would basically enable you to snap a photo of an actual 3D object in the real world, match it to an Amazon product and place a purchase.

This particular new service has been described in Amazon’s patent application as the “User guided object identification”. Should this particular service be implemented, we do wonder just how widespread its use will be, and will this idea actually catch on in the long run? No longer do you need to make some sort of lettered query, as a photo query of a particular object would do.

As for the other items, the process would be a little bit more complicated. In order to locate and match a shoe, a handbag or other real world item, you will need to do your bit when snapping a photo. For instance, you will need to align a sneaker or a boot in the camera viewfinder/screen so that it will match an outline provided by Amazon, in order to increase its accuracy level.
