Nintendo on Monday pulled the plug on the original Wii, a modest end to the best-selling console of the current generation. The company hinted at the move earlier this month, and it has officially followed through with a simple posting of the words “seisan shuuryou,” or “production ended,” on its Japanese Web site.

The Wii, the first video game console to make motion control mainstream, was considered an underdog when it first hit store shelves in 2006. It didn’t sport high-definition graphics — an exclusion that made it the butt of many Sony and Microsoft fanboy jokes — and skepticism was the order of the day for its apparent indifference to the hard-core gaming community and for its eagerness to rope in fitness junkies and families. But it went on to both … [Read more]

Before you ask: this Google’s Project Shield has nothing to do with NVIDIA SHIELD, the two being completely different elements – the Google iteration is all about protecting sites that’d otherwise have little to no protection. From Fiesta to fantastic.
(Credit: Hetain Patel)
The good-guy Transformers tend to take the shape of hot cars like Lamborghinis, Porsches, and Chevrolet Corvettes. Artist Hetain Patel went in a different direction by turning a little Ford Fiesta hatchback into a Transformers monument.
While Transformers on the big screen can turn into humanoid figures in a matter of seconds, it took a bit longer to create the Fiesta sculpture. Patel started with a red 1988 Fiesta that had seen better days. He was inspired to use a Fiesta because it was the first car he ever owned, a gift from his father. His father, a mechanic who converts cars into hearses, worked with him on the creation.
“For me, these ‘robots in disguise’ (as per the cartoon’s theme tune) stand as a metaphor for the other, in a fantasy world where they can transform out of a marginal position into one of empowerment,” writes Patel in an artist’s statement.
Patel and his father’s efforts are captured in a video that traces the project as it develops over time. The result is recognizable as both a working-class car and a squatting Transformers figure.

This summer, as workers labored away at a construction site at the southern tip of Manhattan, a team of archaeologists following their progress made an amazing discovery: Booze—or more specifically, the bottles it came in—from the late 1700s. Right underneath our feet.
The Technology of Archaeology
Posted in: Today's ChiliFollowing on from this weekend’s International Archaeology Day, Gizmodo thought we’d take a quick look at some of the uses of digital technology in discovering, researching, and documenting historic sites, from the ancient to the comparatively recent, from the urban to the rural. It’s our own day of archaeology here on the site.
Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Teaser Shows Every Doc to Ever Wield the Sonic Screwdriver
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you’re a fan of the BBC science-fiction series Doctor Who you probably know that the series has been on the air for 50 years. That’s a long time for any television show to be on the air and I imagine much of the success comes from the premise in the series allowing the actor who plays the Doctor to be replaced on a whim. If viewers find the current Doctor boring, you simply kill him off and replace him.
I mentioned not long ago that the BBC had found some very early episodes from the franchise that were believed to have been lost and planned to show those episodes again. While we wait for those episodes, BBC will be airing a special 75 min. long episode called The Day of the Doctor to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the show. That episode is set to air on November 23 and in anticipation the BBC has released a teaser trailer.
Before you get too excited, you need to be aware that the teaser trailer has no footage at all from the special anniversary episode. Rather, the teaser shows every actor that has ever played Doctor Who all the way back to the beginning of the series. The trailer is also the first time that original Timelord William Hartnell has ever been seen in high-definition and color.

A portable Bluetooth speaker would always come in handy whenever you want to share your favorite music with a group of people simultaneously, and it would also be useful if you are holding some sort of dance or drama practice out in the open – as music can be pumped out in the middle of nowhere without the need for any nasty cables or wires which could trip someone up. Braven has answered this clarion call with their Braven 440, touted to be the “most talented and portable Bluetooth speaker yet”. We cannot really put this claim to the test, but we do know that the Braven 440 is water resistant for sure, as it pumps out room-filling stereo sound, in addition to juicing up your mobile devices while being highly portable thanks to an ultra-compact and lightweight design.
For the eagle eyed, the Braven 440 would come with similar features like those found on its predecessors, where among them would include a built-in noise-cancelling microphone for speakerphone functionality, the ability to deliver crystal clear sound and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity for a wireless experience. Not only that, it would also be able to feature the signature Braven “look”, as it highlights the clean lines with sleek curved borders as well as arriving in five fiery colors, which will include Lunar Black, Fiji Green, Rio Purple, Monaco Blue and Sahara Red.
Underneath the hood, the Braven 440 will be able to deliver up to a dozen hours of non-stop playback, ensuring that users will be able to enjoy music from just about anywhere without having to juice it up. Not only that, it will also be IPX5 water resistant rated, which makes it the ideal tool for both indoor as well as outdoor use, without the need to worry about accidental spills and splashes. The asking price for the Braven 440 stands at $89.99 a pop if you are interested.
