Top 5 spookiest games

Spookiest games

I have to admit that I no longer play scary games before heading to bed. It’s unfair to my wife, who has to put up with the shrieking nightmares they provoke in me, and also live with the knowledge that her husband’s a total wimp.

It was a tough habit to break. If you get a thrill from thinking about things that go bump in the night, there are few experiences that tap that better than turning out the lights and decapitating zombies from the comfort of your couch.

So, for those of you with the freedom to stay up late playing video games (savor this time, folks) or who have yet to be shamed into PG-only fare for the sake of your family, my friend and colleague Jeff Bakalar has gathered together five of the spookiest cross-platform games of the past year.

Mind you, we weren’t going for the most gruesome games, or explicit. In the spirit of Halloween, we really tried to hold tight to the idea of spookiness — that specific moody, blood-pressure-raising feeling that makes you check the locks in your house twice. We also had to boot a few console-exclusive games for the sake of keeping this list cross-platform.

So, without further ado, enjoy our latest Top 5 video, and have a great Halloween.

Wads: Pen and spitwad launcher combo, together at last

Getting up to mischief could get a lot easier if the Wads Kickstarter project flies. No more hunting for straws from the cafeteria. No more disassembling complex pens just to get at the plastic barrel. Wads is made for writing. And it’s made for launching spitwads.

Innovation like this doesn’t come cheap. A Wads pen pledge costs $10, but it also includes a 10-pack of Wads Nerf-like ammunition, so you can target practice without having to generate your own spit-soaked paper lumps.

Ash Gilpin, the brain behind Wads, can see his creation appealing to children (who would just make their own versions anyway). “We think kids will love it. Although, schools will probably ban it. But hey, we’d take the PR,” he tells Crave. He says he plans to move forward with the development of Wads whether or not the funding goal is reached.

These Classic Nike Sneakers Are Actually Made Out of Cigarette Packs

We’ve all felt it: The unique kind of envy that results from encountering something you want, but can’t afford. For some of us, it’s the new iPhone. For others, it’s an eight-foot-long hot tub boat. For artist Jason Ruff in his younger years, it was sneakers and cigarettes—which serve as materials for his latest project.

Archos Unveils Low-Cost, Unlocked Android Titanium Smartphones

A few days ago Archos showed off its new Android-powered GamePad 2 portable gaming tablet. The company is back to announce an entire new series of reasonably priced Android-powered smartphones called the Titanium line.

The main difference between the four smartphones in the new Titanium line (PDF) is screen size and resolution. The line includes the 40 Titanium, 45 Titanium, 50 Titanium, and 53 Titanium. The 40 Titanium has a four-inch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480. The 45 Titanium has a 4.5-inch screen with a resolution of 854 x 480. The 50 Titanium features a five-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 960 x 540. The last of the phones is the 53 Titanium featuring a 5.3-inch 854 x 480 resolution screen.

The other features are the same including Android 4.2.2 for the operating system and MT 6572 dual-core 1.3 GHz processors. All the phones have 4 GB of integrated storage and 512 MB RAM. They’ll also feature a five-megapixel rear camera and integrated A-GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Another the difference between the phones is battery size. The Titanium 40 has a 1500 mAh battery, the 45 Titanium has 1680 mAh unit, the 50 Titanium has a 2100 mAh battery, and the 53 Titanium features a 2500 mAh battery. The phones run on 3G networks with HSPA+ support, which has a theoretical top download speed of 21Mbps.

Pricing ranges from €99.99 to €159.99 (~$137 to $219 USD) with no phone contract required. A launch date for the US is unknown at this time.

While these certainly aren’t top-of-the-line phones, they’re pretty well-appointed for the price, given the fact that the phones come fully unlocked.

Hyperjuice 2 – Tech Charging Powerhouse!

I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but the steady approach of the end of October has me a little uneasy. For the past 2 years the Northwest has been hit, and hit hard, by snowstorms and hurricanes. The memories of sitting around for weeks without power still makes most folks a little uncomfortable. This year we’re ready (which of course means it’s not going to happen) but we’re ready nonetheless.

Check out Hyperjuice 2, an amazing little external battery pack for your Macbook, iPad, iPhone or Smartphone. The Hyperjuice 2 isn’t just your everyday back up battery, this attractive aluminum box is quite possibly one of the world’s most advanced battery packs, Equipped with 2 high power 10W (5V, 2.1A max) USB ports that can charge any 2 USB devices (even 2 iPads) simultaneously!

Hyperjuice 2 has an 85W output that is actually capable of handling a Macbook Pro with Retina display for up to 18 hours, or run your brand new iPad for around 34 hours (and an older one for up to 50) or fully recharge your phone about 19 times. The cool low profile, rectangular design allows the casing, lithium ion battery cells or the logic board to be replaced separately, making the unit maintainable and environmentally  friendly. OLED displays on the face of the unit provide detailed battery information like status, power percentage, temperature and even the time it will take to fully charge or discharge.

So, if you don’t like being off the grid, for any reason, the Hyperjuice 2 might be for you. It’s important to note that Apple has required that for the battery to work with your MacBook, you will also need the Do-it-Yourself Magic Box kit which is sold separately. The cost of this much power doesn’t come cheap however, with a price tag around 300 bucks at amazon.com, but next time you’re sitting in the dark trying to read by candlelight, you’ll wish you had it.
