Just the other day it was reported that the AT&T HTC 8X received the Windows Phone GDR3 update, along with its international variant, as well as the HTC 8XT from Sprint. While the Windows Phone GDR3 update does bring about a host of new features and improvements, here’s one that we’re not sure if Windows Phone users might have missed. It seems that with the GDR3 update, HTC 8X and HTC 8XT users will now be able to power off their devices while allowing their phone to charge. This is not a new feature as other manufacturers have allowed it, but interestingly enough this was something that was not available for HTC 8X/8XT owners prior to the update.
We’re not sure if this is a Windows Phone thing or it’s only applicable to HTC devices, but for those who would prefer to power down their device completely while letting it charge, or perhaps wanting a little peace and quiet and disconnect from the real world while their phones charge, then this update is for you. It is unclear if other Windows Phone manufacturers such as Nokia and Samsung will gain this feature too, but what do you guys think? Are you the type that prefers to completely power off their phone while it charges? Presumably with the radios off your phone should charge a little bit faster, right?

Not only is HTC having recent financial difficulties, but it looks like they will be facing some legal difficulties too as Nokia has won a legal victory over HTC over in the UK where a judge has found that HTC had infringed upon one of Nokia’s European patents. The patent in question is for a “Modulator structure for a transmitter and a mobile station” and with this legal victory, Nokia is now pushing for a sales injunction against HTC and its offending devices, and will also be seeking damages for HTC’s unauthorized used of their patents. “Nokia will now seek an injunction against the import and sale of infringing HTC products in the UK as well as financial compensation.”
Naturally HTC will be appealing to the courts against this decision, but for now it looks like Nokia is in the lead. Nokia has had several legal contestations with other tech giants in the past, such as Apple, although the scale of their legal battle is probably nowhere as near or as “epic” as Apple and Samsung. It is unclear as to which are the products by HTC that have infringed upon Nokia’s patents, but unless they are the HTC One and the newly launched HTC One Max, we reckon HTC shouldn’t be affected too greatly. We will keep an eye out for further development and see how HTC’s appeal goes.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is expected to make its way onto next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, and for the most part we guess gamers expect the game to be similar regardless of which platform they choose. Well it turns out that might not be the case as Activision has since confirmed that Call of Duty: Ghosts will run on 720p HD resolution for the Xbox One, while the PlayStation 4 will enjoy the game at 1080p Full HD resolution, although the upside is that both consoles will run the game at 60fps.
According to the game’s producer, Mark Rubin, “Hey, been on the road last couple weeks so haven’t had a chance to update, but wanted to confirm that for Xbox One we’re 1080p upscaled from 720p. And, we’re native 1080p on PS4. We optimized each console to hit 60 FPS and the game looks great on both. Still on the road, but glad to see the great reception to Extinction. Can’t wait for next week’s launch.” We’re not sure what’s with the difference in resolution, especially since some developers think both consoles are nearly identical, so could this be a software issue then? Either way it seems a little too early to tell, so perhaps a teardown or benchmarks should be able to shed some light on the reason why.

Lego builder Alex Jones, AKA Orion Pax, has constructed an amazing Lego replica of Optimus Prime. The detail and functionality are phenomenal. Jones has been working on his Lego G1 Transformers series for over 10 years. Cybertron would be proud.

It appears that GMail has been having some issues lately with users receiving a 404 error while trying to login. I think most people have experienced this kind of error at some time or another. This situation is a little different because people are claiming that the emails that were sent to them during the outage do not show up. It could be possible that the GMail server is holding the emails until they ensure the user’s access has been restored but some people think that they are permanently gone.
Hopefully this doesn’t become a common issue because I have read quite a few horror stories about GMail losing messages or even deleting everything a user has! If you want to read some of the stories then search Google for “GMail Horror Stories“. I have had no issues but I hope I don’t jinx myself.
