When it comes to electric bicycles, many parts of the world would see a speed limit set by the local authorities to have it max out at a top speed of 20 mph (32 km/h). Anything higher than that, and it would not be classified any more as a bicycle in the legal sense of the word. This particular ruling would definitely go some lengths in ensuring that the speed would remain down when it comes to commercially-produced e-bikes. Well, there are always exceptions to the general rule, and with Russian blogger Ivan Tulupov’s twin-motored Desperado, this is one of those rare cases.
The Desperado weighs the scales at 43 kg (95 lb), and it did cost Tulupov a rather handsome amount of money to build it from scratch, to the tune of approximately$3,000. The Desperado was built around an existing pedal-powered beach cruiser bike which was made by California-based bicycle manufacturer Nirve. The power required to move the Desperado around is supplied by a 20-Ah lithium-ion battery, which takes approximately a couple of hours to fully charge up. A couple of external motors with gearboxes has also been thrown into the mix, and with their combined 5-kW output, it results in a calculated top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph), although it remains to be tested.

If there is one major advantage underneath the hood of modern day smartphones, I would like to say that it is this – the fact that one is able to introduce firmware updates into the mix to, in essence, enhance or prolong the lifespan of the handset in the market is a good thing. The recently reviewed Sony Xperia Z1 as well as the larger sized Xperia Z Ultra have been said to be on the receiving end of the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update, where this update would introduce some improvements in the display as well as helping make the battery last a whole lot longer.
In the Sony Xperia Z1, the camera algorithm has already been tweaked to deliver better all-round performance. Not only that, it has refined Sony’s Smart Social Camera platform in order for Xperia Camera apps to run in a whole lot more smoothly (in particular Burst Mode, Superior Auto, AR Effect and Sweep Panorama), while the Xperia Z Ultra features optimized touchscreen sensitivity that would cater for both finger gestures and writing, “sketching” with pencils, metal pens and selected styluses.
In terms of improvements made to both devices, their respective displays have been re-calibrated so that the viewing experience remains bright and bold, in addition to a better battery economy for a superior battery life. There is also a streamlined Exchange connection for faster email synchronization, display and download. So far, we have not heard reports of any of the smartphones crashing after installing the firmware update, so it should be all systems go if you own either one of them! [Press Release]

Telepathy, now that is certainly a kind of power that we would love to have. As a guy, I sometimes end up with this blank look on my face, wondering just what went wrong with my conversation with the missus. It is moments like those that I wished I could read her mind so that everything would end up hunky dory. No matter, at least it is an opportunity to make sure that things can be patched up, and that normally means a lovely evening dinner outside. A Stanford scientist has discovered a way to ‘eavesdrop’ on the human brain, but it does involve temporarily removing a part of a patient’s skull while inserting a packet of electrodes along the way.
Right now, this particular research is obviously still in its infancy, and the technolog has only been used experimentally on a trio of patients, but neurologists over at Stanford claim that they are officially able to eavesdrop on the human brain in real-life situations, and not clinical ones. Apart from that, the new method of recording brain activity would also pave the way for future devices to be able to read, and more frighteningly, manipulate the mind. Hopefully we will see such advancements in medical technology used for altruistic purposes and not to have it hijacked by some quarters with nefarious intentions.
