Mac Pro Could Be Getting Ready For Production, According To Recent Flextronics Hirings

Mac Pro Could Be Getting Ready For Production, According To Recent Flextronics HiringsEarlier this year during WWDC 2013, Apple took the wraps off their new Mac Pro which features brand new hardware along with a rather interesting design that is a pretty obvious departure from the previous generation Mac Pros. The next question we’re sure some of you guys are asking is when will the computer be released? Apple has given us a “fall” timeframe, and it looks like production could soon be kicking into gear as Flextronics is currently in the process of hiring 1,700 people to work on a “next-generation desktop computer” at their factory in Austin, Texas.

The company declined to reveal what they were working on, but given that the Mac Pro will see assembly in the US, and with Flextronics being Apple’s rumored US manufacturer and with the plant located pretty close to Apple’s local offices, many believe that this recent wave of hiring could be to help Apple begin the manufacturing process of the Mac Pro. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now and don’t get your hopes up just yet, but rumors have pegged the Mac Pro’s release for sometime in November, so to hear Apple and their partners getting ready to begin production and assembly would not be a stretch of the imagination.

MySmartEye App Helps The Visually Impaired “See” The World Around Them

While Apple’s iPhone has a variety of accessibility options, one thing it does lack is that while it might tell users how to navigate the phone, that’s pretty much where it ends. Of course we expect it’s not really Apple’s job to describe the world to the visually impaired, and that’s where handy apps like MySmartEye comes in. It was developed by the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped and StarHub, a local carrier. Basically what the app does is that it relies on what they called “microvolunteers”. To see the world around them, all the user has to do is snap a photo, upload it to a gallery, and these microvolunteers basically help to describe the photos as detailed as possible. The description is then read back to the user via the app’s text-to-speech feature.

It is definitely a pretty awesome idea although given that it will rely on volunteers to keep it active, descriptions of photos might not necessarily be instant and could take minutes, hours, or even days before your photo is processed, but we suppose the more volunteers there are, the faster the process should be. The app is free for download and if you’re interested in checking it out or helping out, hit up the iTunes App Store for the details.

Updated MacBook Pro Could Be Announced During Apple’s 22nd October Event

Updated MacBook Pro Could Be Announced During Apples 22nd October EventApple’s 22nd of October event is expected to cover the launch of OS X Mavericks and new iPads in the form of the fifth-gen iPad and the iPad mini. However recent reports have suggested that Apple could be doing more than that and could be announcing updated MacBook Pro laptops as well. Given that Apple had announced updates to its iMacs, MacBook Air, and even the Mac Pro, it is surprising that nothing was mentioned about the MacBook Pro which gives rise to the possibility that this event might be addressing just that.

Apple’s computer lineup has been updated to Intel Haswell chips, save for the MacBook Pro, so it is more than likely that at least one of the updates to the laptop would be the switch to Haswell. It is unclear as to what other specs we might be able to expect in the update, although we wouldn’t mind if the MacBook Air’s “all-day” battery life made an appearance in the updated MacBook Pro as well. Other possible specs include 802.11ac WiFi which was found on the new MacBook Airs, so that’s another feature worth looking forward to. In any case we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled so if a new MacBook Pro is what you’re after, check back with us on the 22nd of October for the details.

    Cannabis A Cancer Cure?

Cannabis A Cancer Cure?Cancer is a modern day health scourge for humans, and somehow or rather, I cannot help but lay some of the blame due to the amount of chemicals that are around us as well as our consumption of processed food. Our ancestors certainly had a far lower rate of cancer compared to today, but then again, they had other stuff to worry about such as the Spanish Flu and what-not. The fight against cancer has seen a fair amount of advancements made in our favor, but it has not yet managed to eradicate the disease once and for all. For some, cancer is still a death sentence. Here is an interesting bit of news though – a new study claims that the non-hallucinogenic parts of cannabis could be processed into a potentially highly effective anti-cancer drugs.

Dr. Wai Liu said, “This study is a critical step in unpicking the mysteries of cannabis as a source of medicine. The cannabinoids examined have minimal, if any, hallucinogenic side effects, and their properties as anti-cancer agents are promising. These agents are able to interfere with the development of cancerous cells, stopping them in their tracks and preventing them from growing. In some cases, by using specific dosage patterns, they can destroy cancer cells on their own.”

Sounds like the dream drug for many, eh? Of course, plenty more research needs to be performed in this area before such a claim can be justified or proven, so let us not count our chickens before they hatch.

Nikon Sues Sakar For Design Patent Infringement Of Its Nikon 1

Nikon Sues Sakar For Design Patent Infringement Of Its Nikon 1Nikon Corporation, with its principal place of business located in Tokyo, Japan, as well as Nikon Inc., having its main place of business located in New York, USA, have collectively come together to file a lawsuit with the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York against Sakar International, Inc.. The charge against Sakar? For allegedly performing an infringement of the design patent as well as trade dress right owned by Nikon. Nikon is looking for an injunctive relief against Sakar in the lawsuit so that the latter will no longer be able to manufacture and sell their Polaroid brand digital still camera that is known as the “Polaroid iM1836″.

We did talk about the Polaroid iM1836 earlier on in the year, where it was touted to be a digital camera which was powered by the Android mobile operating system, making it an early leader in such a department. Nikon claims that the Polaroid iM1836 has infringed upon their Nikon 1’s design, and they are not too happy with it. Nikon also claimed to have “negotiated with Sakar to amicably solve this problem”, but they were unable to arrive at an agreement. Hence, the necessity of a lawsuit (and some lawyers getting a nice payday from this, too).

Do you think that the Nikon 1 is the base design for the Polaroid iM1836, or is Nikon throwing a baseless accusation from the layperson’s point of view? [Press Release]
