Facebook To Open First Israel Office

Facebook To Open First Israel OfficeSocial networking giant Facebook is a company that has its fair number of offices considering the size to which it has grown over the years, and this time around, we have received news that it will be picking up an Israeli mobile technology startup – in addition to opening up its first office in Israel. Now, that would definitely be one of the more natural things for them to do instead of relocating the Israeli mobile technology startup elsewhere, right? In a statement that was issued today, Facebook claimed that they picked up Israeli mobile utility application developer Onavo in order to assist the social media giant in coming up with superior mobile products as well as to help connect more people worldwide to the Internet (and of course, to jump aboard the Facebook bandwagon).

The firm in question is Onavo, and to think that it was founded a mere three years back only to have it picked up by Facebook is definitely something to mull over in terms of its progress and capability. Onavo rolls out technology which compresses content in order for mobile users to be able to use more data. Interestingly enough, Onavo also has an office in California. Just how much did Facebook pay to take over Onavo? Israeli media reported a figure in the sum of more than $100 million, but Facebook declined to comment on the matter.

HTC Sense 5.5 For HTC One Confirmed

HTC Sense 5.5 For HTC One Confirmed

The Taiwanese manufacturer has confirmed that it will release HTC Sense 5.5 for HTC One. This announcement comes after HTC’s worst kept secret, the HTC One Max, was finally announced today. The phablet will come with Sense 5.5 installed out of the box, its younger and relatively smaller sibling will receive the update in the near future. A few screenshots of HTC Sense 5.5 were leaked last week, today we got a good glimpse of it with the official images of the One Max.

The folks at HTC have confirmed to Pocketlint that Sense 5.5 will be released for HTC One, but they’ve not confirmed exactly when this release will take place. HTC One is currently undergoing a round of updates. Android 4.3 update for the device is gradually being rolled out, U.S. carrier branded models only started receiving it last week. Sense 5.5 will be brought over to the One in a future software update. A number of improvements have been made in Sense 5.5. Blinkfeed has been enhanced and users finally have the option to turn Blinkfeed off and revert to a standard issue home screen with shortcuts, widgets etc. Users can now also source content from RSS feeds into Blinkfeed and they can mark something if they wish to read it later. Changes have been made to the gallery as well, it now uses a carousel for navigation. It certainly enhances and refines the user experience, and is likely to make those on Sense 5.0 wish that the update be released soon.

An Upsetting Map of NYC's Grossest Supermarkets

Most of us assume our supermarkets are clean and hygenic because of how quickly disease would spread if mice were pooping on our food or if festering meat were left on a grinder. We assume employees are careful and that regulations keep us all safe. Well, hold on to your insides, because this handy map of New York City’s foulest markets proves how oblivious these assumptions really are.

Donald Trump demands larger iPhone screen

    He's not happy.

Apple is used to the criticisms of the unwashed, the ungainly, and the unbelievably style-challenged devotees of invective and Android.

It tolerates them like one of those gold-painted men on seaside boardwalks, who stand perfectly still in the face of ludicrous human provocation.

I am not sure, though, that Apple can possibly ignore the latest brickbat tossed its way. This isn’t from some slick, twin-mouthed analyst or a pundit with a perverse inside track.

No, this is from perhaps America’s most prominent, most successful, and most carefully spoken businessman. Yes, Donald Trump.

Speaking not merely for himself, but for the whole future of American industry, Trump took to Twitter on Monday to do what he does best: say the unsaid to startle the undead.

Frictional officially unveils space horror game Soma

    (Credit: Frictional Games)

Earlier this month, Frictional Games, the developer behind the magnificent Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Penumbra, launched a mysterious teaser Web site that seemed to showcase retrieved space artefacts. The game behind it has been unveiled: Soma, a first-person space horror slated for a 2015 release for PC and PlayStation 4.

Creative director Thomas Grip took to the PlayStation blog to open up about the game, which has been kept tightly under wraps for three years. He describes it as a game in which you, the player, are not a hardened space marine or super warrior, but an ordinary person in extraordinary circumstances.

The radio has gone silent on PATHOS-2. As isolation bears down on the staff of the remote research facility, strange things are happening. Machines are taking on human traits, and alien constructions have started to interfere with routine. The world around them is turning into a nightmare. The only way out is to do something unimaginable.

“The subject that Soma will discuss is consciousness,” Grip wrote. “Personally, I fin… [Read more]

Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD Upgrade From Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Reconsidered

Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD Upgrade From Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean ReconsideredIt was just yesterday when we brought you word that the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD does seem destined to have its operating system version remain on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for all eternity, as there does not seem to be a newer operating system update coming to this particular smartphone from Motorola. Which was a bummer, really, as the smartphone itself is not exactly something that you would deem to be obsolete anytime soon, as it has not even been out for more than two years plus already.

Well, we are glad to announce that there is always hope in all situations, even though that some of them might seem to be hopeless in the first place. Case in point, we have received word from Motorola that the DROID RAZR MAXX HD might still be considered to get a newer operating system version in the future, as the status of the handset has changed from “The device will remain on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean)” to “Stay tuned for an upgrade decision.” We are not quite sure whether this was due to the uproar that arose by owners of the DROID RAZR MAXX HD, or is it because of a genuine mistake on Motorola’s part earlier on in putting up the wrong status. Either way, all’s well that ends well – or so it seems, at the moment, for the DROID RAZR MAXX HD.

Apple Might Unveil New Smart Cover With iPad 5

Apple Might Unveil New Smart Cover With iPad 5

Time and again we’ve heard that Apple is going to announce the iPad 5 soon. Its plausible, the timing is just about right for a new iPad to hit the market, though no one knows right now exactly when the company intends on making the announcement. A recent analyst prediction suggests that new Smart Cover may also be announced with the iPad 5. This is plausible as well, given the fact that the iPad 5 is expected to come with major design changes, which would essentially make previous Smart Covers unusable with the new iPad.

It has consistently been rumored that Apple is going to make design changes in the iPad. The tablet’s design has remained the same since the iPad 2, which came out back in 2011. iPad 5 is expected to borrow design cues from the iPad mini, and the various purported casings we’ve seen up till now reiterate this possibility. Analyst Brian J. White of Cantor Fitzgerald believes that this change in design will provide Apple with an “excuse” to announce new Smart Cover as well. Not much is known about the new covers at this point in time, its too soon to say if Apple will opt for materials different from the ones it has already used for previous covers and if its going to add even more colors to the lineup. The iPad announcements are rumored to take place on October 22nd.

iPad mini 2 thickens with case leak

There’s a China Sourcing Fair going on this week with a selection of electronics and accessories, and in the masses a set of iPad cases has appeared. The iPad mini 2 (the 2nd generation iPad mini, that is) in particular has raised eyebrows as one carrier seems to have revealed the thickness of the device […]

Nintendo DS Turned into Tiny Arcade Cabinet: 1DS

We’ve seen a full-sized arcade cabinet hacked to control a Nintendo DS. Redditor button-masher decided to cram the handheld into a tiny arcade cabinet instead. Then he went to great lengths to make it look like a real arcade cabinet, adding tiny joysticks and buttons, a marquee and even a couple of coin slots.

tiny arcade cabinet nintendo ds by button masher 620x823magnify

The joystick and buttons are wired to the DS’ circuit board. The upper screen of the DS serves as the cabinet’s monitor, while its lower half is crammed inside. Even though the cabinet’s banner bears Galaga’s logo, the cabinet can actually play any DS game. Or at least, any DS game that can be controlled with a joystick and two buttons. But I think button-masher’s good with his cartridges: Namco Museum and Konami Classics Arcade Hits.

There are probably cheaper or easier ways to make a tiny arcade cabinet, but if you have a spare or unused Nintendo DS this is a great way to repurpose the aging handheld. Head to Imgur to see more pictures of button-masher’s mod.
