Foursquare Ads Launched

Ads are a vital source of revenue of online companies and services. We recently saw Pinterest announce its own ad offering; such endeavors allow these companies and services to be sustainable and grow more in the future. Foursquare has jumped into the fray too, today it announced the launch of Foursquare Ads, a self-serve tools that business owners can use to propel their businesses in front of people who’re nearby, but possibly unaware about them.

Foursquare says that it has built its ads offering to be “simple and flexible,” borrowing for its relationships with more than 1.5 million claimed businesses as well as four years worth of data. Merchants who want to advertise through Foursquare just need to go to its ads website and create their ad. They can choose a photo of their space, offer a special for customers or even highlight a tip that a customer left behind and then push the ad to people who live nearby after setting a monthly budget. Ads will be displayed in the Explore tab and the Home screen of Foursquare’s mobile applications. Merchants will only pay when a customer taps on something in the ad or if they claim an offer at the merchant’s business. Merchants will also be given detailed insights about the campaign, with data on the number of people who tapped on the ad and those who came into the business to claim an offer.

US Cellular Hops Aboard The Shared Data Bandwagon

US Cellular Hops Aboard The Shared Data BandwagonYou know what they say – if everyone else is doing it, why not go ahead and give it a go yourself? Surely the majority cannot be wrong, right? That is the case with US Cellular, as this mobile carrier in the US intends to jump aboard the shared data plan bandwagon by offering a slew of options to consumers as well as small businesses, just like how the larger mobile carriers have already done so. US Cellular makes sure that customers will be able to hook up to 10 different devices to a similar pool of data.

In order to help you plan your budget better, plans will begin at $40 a month for 300MB which is pretty paltry when you think about it, but if you know that you need something that is a whole lot more practical, then there is always a monthly fee of $560 a pop for a whopping 75GB of storage space. Those are meant for personal use, as businesses themselves will be on the receiving end of a modified deal, where you can have up to 25 different devices hooked up to 100GB for $750 monthly. All of the plans will include unlimited voice, messaging and of course, tethering thrown into the mix as well. Alternatively, you will be able to rely on a per device charge that might make things more manageable for you.

Bill Nye’s partner dishes on dancing with the Science Guy

Bill Nye the Science Guy had a memorable but short-lived stint on “Dancing with the Stars,” where he brought his nerdy charm and questionable dance skills to the television show. His professional dancing partner, Tyne Stecklein, showed up on Reddit to answer fans’ questions about the experience.

While some people had questions relating to Stecklein’s other professional work, just about everybody wanted to know the dirt on Nye. Stecklein confirms that Nye’s geeky personality isn’t an act. “He IS the science guy that we all love even when the camera’s not rolling!” she writes.

Nye came to the show with a background in swing dancing, but it didn’t help much with learning the choreographed moves. Stecklein’s shares that Nye translated the choreography into science terms like “inertia” to help him remember the dances.

“Retaining all the steps on the right counts was a challenge, but I couldn’t have asked for a harder-working partner! He was obsessed with getting it right!” Stecklein writes.

Rupert Murdoch calls for Google to be ‘exposed’

    What can he mean?

    (Credit: Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

On Twitter, what’s fascinating isn’t merely what people write. I try to picture where they were and what they were wearing as they were tweeting.

So I am imagining Rupert Murdoch on Sunday night, slurping on a glass of fine, golden beer, seated in a red velvet smoking jacket.

Clutching his phone, filled with the kind of irritating news a boss often receives, he cast his frustrations to the wind. Or, rather to the Twitterati.

For Sunday night, News Corp.’s heart and soul offered: “‘Please expose Eric Schmidt, Google’ etc. Just wait!”

There is so little here, and yet so much. Firstly, what secrets can possibly be hidden by the always open government of Google? What dark insinuations are being proposed here?

Is it merely to do with the alleged theft of all the world’s news? Or might there be something even more menacing and filled with acronyms such as NSA, LSD, or LOL?

And why single out Executive Chairman Schmidt? Why not Google’s true self-driving force, Larry Page? Is there something of a personal nature that Murdoch would like exposed?

The New Deadliest Substance Known to Man Is Top Secret (For Now)

Scientists recently discovered a new type of botulinum toxin (a.k.a. botox) that they believe is the deadliest substance known to man. Because they’ve yet to discover an antitoxin, researchers won’t publish the details of gene sequence due to security concerns—a first for the scientific community. Thank God.

Root Verizon Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900V Now Possible

Root Verizon Galaxy Note 3 SM N900V Now Possible

Only last week we reported that a couple of well known Android tinkerers had teamed up to create the root method for AT&T Galaxy Note 3. They’ve now replicated the same for Big Red’s variant, allowing users to root Verizon Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900V. The method is actually called Root De La Vega, an obvious jab at AT&T CEO Ralph De La Vega. The carrier is known for its disapproval of unlocked bootloaders, but that doesn’t stop tinkerers from getting their way and opening up paths for the millions of commoners who use these devices.

Since the root method has essentially been replicated for the Verizon variant, the same limitations apply. Those who want to root Verizon Galaxy Note 3 would require a Windows PC, the method can’t be done through a Mac. Samsung’s ODIN tool will be required as well, and it wouldn’t hurt if aspiring root maestros knew the various technicalities that surround the process. Also, the device’s entire internal memory will be wiped, so please make a backup before proceeding. Through this method, a pre-rooted version of stock Galaxy Note 3 firmware is installed on the device, which is why the root package weighs almost 1.24GB. Since the bootloader on Verizon Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900V remains locked, custom kernels and recoveries can’t be installed at this moment. The root package and relevant instructions can be found over at XDA forums.

HDMI 2.0 Upgrade Path: Where do the manufacturers stand?

    (Credit: Geoffrey Morrison)

Currently, there are over two dozen Ultra HD “4K” TVs available or imminently available. The problem is, only one is currently fully compatible with the upcoming HDMI 2.0 standard.

So we asked all the companies making 4K TVs, what’s their planned path for upgradability to the new standard?

In case you missed it, here’s a bit of a primer. Recently, HDMI Licensing announced HDMI 2.0, the next version in that evolving connection. This replaces HDMI 1.4 which is what you have on most (if not all) of your gear. The highlights are increased bandwidth, which allows for higher resolutions and framerates, and no new cables. You can read all about it in … [Read more]
